Better than a Dream Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 950 ratings

Sometimes, having what you dream about can make life better, but it doesn’t always make it easier. After a disastrous proposal and breakup, Gemma Wilson is finally working on accepting her true self, knowing that there is no time like the present to get her life in order. While trying to maintain her fledgling marketing business, she’s resolved to finally put herself out there, excited at being in the lesbian world for the first time. When she meets a woman at a party, she feels the magnetism that people talk about and that she’s only felt in her dreams the past few months.

Harper Kennedy is everything a twenty-something New Yorker aspires to be, but she has her own baggage that’s holding her back in ways that not even she can acknowledge. She may be successful in the business world, but she’s never had a successful relationship, and the idea of fitting that piece into her life feels utterly insurmountable, not that she’s ever even wanted to try before.

After a fling that would seemingly end there, the two are thrown back together, convoluting an already tricky situation for both of them and turning their worlds’ upside down. Is it possible to make it through this project in one piece, and maybe even find love along the way?

    Spoilers in this review

I agree with the other reviewers that said the ending felt rushed with unnecessary drama. Gemma and Harper both had their issues to work through, but overall were great together and I loved their story until 90% in. Harper's character growth completely regresses and she really hurts Gemma. And since it's so close to the end, it's resolved by the very next chapter. I honestly would have preferred that the drama be appropriately lengthened to feel more substantial, or have it be cut entirely. Still, this was her debut novel and even if the ending felt off to me, I still really enjoyed the book and I recommend it.

I loved this book! I love these characters and how clearly smitten they are for each other, even if it takes them (or one of them) awhile to figure this out! They are adorable and work so well together!

Gemma kept having dreams… hot dreams that helped her finally look inward and come to terms with her sexuality. A dance party. Hot eye contact leading to a brief encounter.

Harper an entrepreneur who just wanted to blow of steam after working too hard for months.

Can they find a way to make it work? Or is it just hot chemistry and Sex? Read this amazing book and find out.

The surprise assholery to introduce suspense near the end seemed to me gratuitous. I was quite fond of the book until that point. The epilog also seems at the high school level. The cover of the book is a mystery to me, I can't relate it to the story.

Wow. I loved it! The dynamics, the emotions, the settings. Even the sweaters. There is no cat, but we can't have everything we want.

I have to say, up until about 91% of the way through the book, I would’ve absolutely rated this 5 stars. I was invested in the book, I loved the characters and the storyline. I felt like everything was well-written and well-paced. Suddenly though, when I felt that the book should have been coming together and nearing its conclusion, a really random and ubrupt climax hit that I didn’t even feel was necessary. Then, of course, since the book had so little left, I also felt that the climax was dealt with in a rushed way that felt a bit unrealistic and left me unsatisfied. As someone who loves to write, I understand how difficult it can be to tie up an ending well, but I honestly felt like the book was headed toward a perfect tie up that would’ve left me very happy, but the random climax threw it through a loop that the author didn’t leave enough time after for tying up the new loose ends it caused.

Loved this bizarre love story, why do we go out of our way to hurt those we love? Harper's disrespect of Gemma was heart breaking, how could Gemma ever want to be with Harper again, what a bitch Harper you certainly do not deserve Gemma!

What a terrific debut novel, loved the two characters and really could relate to them, wish we could all have such passion in our lives. Will be reading all this writer has to offer. It would be fun to revisit these two in later tales.

And in this book she's very good. I have no idea if sorting by publication date on Amazon actually works as this book comes before later work that I just couldn't read due to poor writing and or editing.

However, this was excellent. Both of the main characters were wonderfully drawn, and as each alternate POV chapter unfolded I found myself rooting for one, then the other, then back to the first etc etc.

A supposed ice queen who's not so icy, and an ingenue who's not so innocent makes for a romantic and hot read.
