Beyond the Lens: A heartwarming romantic comedy (Lucy Mitchell Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,880 ratings

Seven strangers. One Spanish island. A TV crew capturing every moment.

It’s just one week. What’s the worst that could happen?

That’s what
Lucy tells herself when she signs up for an all-expenses-paid trip to a sun-soaked Spanish island. A little adventure, a few cocktails, and maybe even a holiday romance – what could go wrong?

Enter
Adam, the charming cameraman who’s just as tempting as the Mediterranean views.

As their behind-the-scenes flirtation heats up, Lucy almost forgets the cameras are rolling, especially when rumours swirl that the show might never air.

But when she returns home, reality hits hard. Suddenly, Lucy is thrust into an unwanted spotlight, and the life she left behind is unrecognisable.

Can she escape the cameras and reclaim her privacy? And will her holiday romance survive the glare of the real world?

Lucy and Adam are such an adorable duo! It was funny when they were on the reality show and Lucy simply refused to let Adam the cameraman be invisible to her. But when reality TV shifted back to reality, I enjoyed how their relationship developed throughout the drama unfolding around them. It would be fun to read a chapter from Adam’s perspective to get his inner thoughts since he is often the sweet, silent type. And the rest of the gang that stuck together after being randomly chosen were a great addition to the story. I’m looking forward to the next part of Adam and Lucy’s story!

The characters were interesting and developed pretty nicely. I guess I just kept thinking that there would be more to the story but it never happened for me anyway. The plots just seemed to lack substance and moved very slowly.

Beyond the Lens is a light read, suitable for a weekend at the beach or sitting beside a pool. The characters are all pretty likable and endearing.

I enjoyed Part 2 much more than I did Part 1. I found the beginning of the book to be just a tad boring and repetitive after a while - seven days of romping in the pool, innocent flirting, etc. which all went to prove that all of the "contestants" really did get along with one another.

Overall, this is a good, quick book to read over a weekend. The writing is good enough to compel me to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this story. I was so sad when it was over! The story starts out with Lucy being laid off from her job. On her way home, she's stopped by a camera crew and asked if she wants to go on a holiday to Spain. Since her mom encourages her to be a yes person, she agrees and the fun begins! She's whisked off to Spain with 6 strangers to live in a house for a week and be a part of a new reality show. The characters in this book are so great and I really liked how the story unfolded. I could relate a lot to Lucy and found this story to be funny, heartwarming, and interesting.

From the moment I started to read Beyond the Lens I was hooked. Lucy and all of the other characters are so real you will think you are right there with them. I stayed up all night to finish it, I loved it that much. I had to know what happened in the end. I can’t wait to throw myself into the second one! Anyone who loves quirky romance stories with plenty of friendship thrown in and a few surprises will enjoy this book.

Lucy has just lost her job and feeling worse by the minute. The last thing she wanted to do was listen to this crazy woman shouting about free holidays. She tried to go on her way but the crazy lady and a small group surrounding her, with cameras followed and somewhere along the way, she listens.
Can't say anymore or it'll ruin the surprises but this is a fun, feel good story that was a joy to read. One you can share with your teenagers too.

A good story, well told, with well-drawn characters. Not your run of the mill romcom! A very enjoyable read.

4.0 out of 5 stars At The Finca
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 19, 2019
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I enjoy a good rom-com as much as the next woman "of a certain age" but it is always a bit of a risk trying a new author. Luckily Ms Ellis does not disappoint and has presented the reader with a quirky and funny novel that centres around a reality TV show. I was expecting something along the lines of UnReal but whilst it does touch on the manipulation of the edit suite it is much more about the disparate group of characters thrown together by circumstance.

At first it took me a while to get on board with the whole premise - grabbing 7 strangers from the street and flying them out to spend a week free of charge in a Spanish Finca, the only catch being they agree to be filmed. Each of the 7 (Dylan, Ryan, Matt, Kelly, Margaret, Chrissie and our heroine Lucy) have wildly different reasons for taking the week out of their real lives; the only problem for the production team is they genuinely get along. The only problem for me was that they were all a little bit too drama free and I did find it hard to countenance that 7 disparate people would gel so much. It did make for fun reading though.

The real problems start when they get back to Manchester and find that they have been broadcast live to the nation and in a way that is unrepresentative of the actual week they spent. There is a nice little twist to the story and a moral about what the media (social and traditional) can do to manipulate the consumer.

I did find myself less interested in the budding romance between Adam the cameraman and Lucy than in the friendships developing between the lucky 7; particularly after they return to Manchester. Whilst the romance angle is well drawn and, for the genre, moderately believable I was much more interested in the characters and how they related to each other and their sudden fame rather than whether Adam and Lucy were really going to make a go of it.

This fun and frothy and would make the perfect beach read.
