4.7 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

Gripping WWII historical fiction laced with true events.

Berlin 1939 - 1943 From the smoking ruins of a bombed Berlin brothel, three shocked and injured female survivors are taken to a secluded training facility by Nazi officer, Gruppenführer Watler Schellenberg. They’re not there for official business but for medical treatment. Trained by the SS officer in all aspects of espionage, the women are desperate to survive. They turn the tables on their armed captors and kill them. After covering their tracks, the women return to ply the only trade they know… with an added twist. Somehow these ‘sisters in arms’ escape the attention of the Nazis, despite the high rank of their victims, and their lucrative business thrives. They haven’t escaped everyone’s notice though. British Intelligence were monitoring Schellenberg’s operations for some time, and their attention has zeroed in on the three women. They dispatch one of their top male agents to make contact…

5.0 out of 5 stars Fact and fiction produces a good storyReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 2, 2020Verified PurchaseI enjoyed the fast action of this thriller. Certain aspects of the novel had been well researched and added authenticity to the whole thing. I liked the way that much of the story was told individually through the minds of each of the three main characters (three heroines actually!), it worked well.
The story line was very well structured, a lot of thought and planning had gone into it and was a big factor in making it such an enjoyable read.
Not much to dislike about it really, perhaps a touch of romance would have added to it.

I would consider myself more than the average WWII history buff. Growing up with my father, a serious history lover, we were constantly getting quizzed on important dates and events. We watched more of the History Channel than we ever did sports, and my reading always seems to gravitate toward historical fiction after too much time away from it. So, I was excited to get back to the familiar with Stephen Cohen’s “Blue Ring Assassins,” the first book in the series.

From the opening pages of this read I found myself learning so much about WWII tactics. First, using brothel prostitutes as spies. But also with from the small marine animal with untraceable venom to kill, the very deadly weapon found in the book’s titling.

“Blue Ring Assassins” is a powerful read around the prostitutes Nazis used. Threatening concentration camps to brothel owners unless they used prostitutes to seduce foreigner secrets, plying with alcohol women got the men talking, catching anyone being disloyal or carrying secrets. The Nazis trained these women and installed listening devices across the establishments.

It is clear author Stephen Cohen did some serious research in the penning of this phenomenal read. While the average individual often recognizes the military accomplishments of the men that went off to war, the women left behind played a massive role as well, sometimes involuntarily. In a publishing field ripe with WWII fiction Cohen finds a unique and untouched piece of history to bring to his readers. With brash and brilliant women, both with love for their country and roiling hate for it, “Blue Ring Assassins” brings a unique contribution to historical fiction reading occurring around WWII.

Readers get to experience Hannah as she is ripped from her family by the country she feels she owes everything to. As the years pass, we become acquainted with two close friends she meets along the way, having undergone similar Nazi training. But as war rages on in Berlin, these three are soon fighting for their own lives and the transformation of these women is visible right in front of the reader’s eyes. Seeing the emotion, the terror, suffering, and finally vengeance that plays across the page in a very relatable way. Sucking you in from the very first page, WWII history lovers and even those just looking for a powerful female trio will love every single bit of this book.

I am a huge fan of WW II fiction. I have read both bestsellers, and lesser known books, and I never fail to be moved by the suffering and resilience of the victims and survivors.

This book is no exception. It is the story of three girls who work at a brothel and are hired by the resistance to do spy work. They want to leave their old lives behind, but that is hardly ever the case in reality. So they try to make the best of it by using their old skills for new purposes. They have been hardened by war and killing, and have turned into cold revenge machines. But at the same time, they still have some emotions and humanity left in them. They author has portrayed this fine balance very well.

A lot of WW II books and movies have male protagonists. Stories with female protagonists are few and far between, and virtually nonexistent when it comes to socially unacceptable groups like brothel workers. Kudos to the author for filling in some of this gap. The author also does a fine job of explaining training methods, escape plans, and other such spy stuff. I found a lot of it to be novel, thrilling, and informative.

The only complaint I have about the book is that the first person narrator keeps changing constantly, and I had to constantly keep track of who the narrator is. But that's probably just me, I guess.

A highly entertaining story by a very talented author. Will definitely read the next book if I get the chance to do so. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed the story very much. And I like how the story was told through the eyes of the three main characters; Hannah, Heidi, and Petra. You really get to know these characters well and can feel their fear, anger, frustration, despair, and desire for justice. You are quickly caught up in their lives.

This novel is also a fascinating blend of fact and fiction, with a unique plot. There are exciting twists and turns around every corner. Readers also get a real look inside Germany, and the suffering of the German people brought about by Hitler’s ambitious plans for Aryan Lebensraum.

This thriller’s strength is a very good action story line. It would make an exciting series if well cast. The women are distinct enough to carry their roles in the plot through, but their development is quite shallow. Fine if all you want to read is a kick-ass thriller. I know many male writers who write excellent female characters but I often found myself thinking, this had to be written by a guy. Still, I was rooting on the heroines, particularly impressed and scared by Hannah’s ruthlessness, since they were taking out Nazis. Then there was a cold-blooded event about 2/3 of the way through that pretty much killed my sympathy for them though I continued the tale. I’m also only giving it 3 stars because the book was very basic stylistically. The writing carried the plot but that was all. The scenes of violence were the most vivid, which was a bit creepy. I’d have liked more depth to the characters and a bit more world building to bring the text to life. The cover for this book was terribly amateurish, but I did think the covers for the sequels were much better.

Where to start?! Within the first few pages I was invested in all 3 of the main protagonists and the character development throughout does not disappoint. This book is immersed in well-researched facts which makes the storyline even more impressive, it’s like having an intensive history lesson whilst being taken on a fabulous fictitious journey! The scenes are set perfectly, the author takes you to Nazi Germany without you having to try to forcefully imagine it. The attention to detail is impeccable and I found myself reading up about places, events, training methods and more after I’d finished the book as it had piqued my interest so much! The author has done wonderfully well to weave so much truth into the story which adds so much to the plot line, which is also followed in perfect chronological order of events. A must-read for anyone with an interest in this wonderful genre of historical fact meets fiction. I cannot wait to see what book 2 brings!

This novel is more than just an action-packed thriller. It also explores powerful themes of survival, loyalty, and female agency in wartime. The three women's bond, formed through trauma and reinforced through shared survival, becomes the emotional spine of the story. Their camaraderie as sisters in arms in a world dominated by powerful men is a triumph, showcasing their bravery and cunning in a way that challenges and reinvents the wartime spy novel.
