It's July in Chicago, and all over the city, the heat sends temperatures soaring. Lieutenant Billy Doran struggles to extinguish erupting gang vendettas while he waits for the clock to run down on Sergeant Arthur Diamond's leave of absence in Toronto. Shorthanded, Doran needs his best man to help crack down on the newest scourge stalking the streets.
Diamond and Doran have a battle on their hands and this time the menace to Chicago has jealousy at its core.
The one bright spot on Doran's horizon is the imminent birth of his first grandchild. He hopes for a boy. What he gets is unimaginable.
