Breaking Giants: A Rockstar Romance (Breaking Love Book 1) Kindle Edition
When I meet Julian Ashburn, the reclusive frontman of indie-rock legends Breaking Giants, I do what any sane woman would do. Embarrass myself, then insult him. Because you only live once, right?
Besides, keeping my distance from the enigmatic, songwriting genius is an act of self-preservation. Julian is dangerous—a pool of kerosine to my pyromaniac.
I have a weakness for broken men.
But sometimes the stories we tell and the songs we sing—about family, love, and ourselves—have to be rewritten in order for us to grow. Call it fate, or stars aligning, or cosmic accident, but I'm about to find out that of the two of us, Julian isn't the broken one.
Breaking Giants is a full-length standalone rockstar romance with alllll the angst. HEA guaranteed. See the author's website for content warnings.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2017Holy wow, this is an abso-freakin-lutley MUST read! I won’t recap the synopsis since you can read the blurb, but this is a tender, evocative, agonizing, humorous, heartwarming read that you really don’t want to miss! This author had my brain snagged at the second sentence: “Water coats the windows like vaseline, morphing street traffic into pulsing ribbons of light.” Since Rose and Julian are song writers, we also get actual poetry in the form of lyrics that are equal parts amazing and haunting. So just that easily, my heart is invested in the story. Then there’s the shove and yank, the love and hate, and the obsession and rejection of the two main characters that ripped at my soul. They’re both so wounded, raw and authentic that you feel every pain, heartache, sorrow, joy and euphoria to the depths of your being.
For a self-proclaimed emotional delinquent and glutton for angst, this word master creates pure poetry with a side of snark, exhibiting a delightfully sarcastic sense of humor. Ms. Halloran, your angst gluttony was certainly showing in this one. I thought Rose and Julian would NEVER get together. But as the saying goes, timing is everything in life and love. If nothing else, life gives us lessons, and until we learn and grow, those same lessons are repeated over and over. It’s so obvious at the beginning of the book that these two belong together, but the book isn’t so much about their epic romance as it is about the individual struggle and how our path to growth effects not only ourselves but others.
The storyline and writing are superb and all of the characters are so rich, complex and colorful you truly feel like you’re a part of the story. I’ve never been to a coffee house that has an open mike night but the vivid descriptions gave life to every scene, so I could smell the coffee and baked goods, feel the draft and smell the rain as the door opened and closed, and hear the cheering of the crowd as the music played. I’m in awe that this author was able to imagine such a realistic fictional setting and then bring it to life on the pages of this book. I adored the characters, from the quirky psychic aunt to the hot, loveable playboy band member, Matt. This could easily turn into a series, if the author where so inclined, because the places and people felt like home and family, and any reader would love to spend more time there with them. If you’re looking for an angsty, soulful, passionate romance, be sure to pick up this 5+ star masterpiece!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2025Wowza. This was definitely not your usual hearts-and-flowers, sweet romance. I mean, it’s a rock star romance, so there’s bound to be some drama right? This book most definitely had that, but it also had a huge amount of angst.
A - allllllll sorts of feelings. Good ones, bad ones, sad ones, tingly ones. Bravo to the author for making me FEEL.
N - not.gonna.lie…this one pl$$ed me off a lot. Though it’s very well-written, some of the things the MCs did made me angry. Often.
G - good and gritty and gut-wrenching and…GAH.
S - sooooooo much push and pull.
T - two troubled main characters. They both had issues (lots!) to work through.
This love story is complicated, passionate, and powerful. Did it make me mad? Yes. But did I enjoy it? Yes, yes I did. If angsty romances are your jam, this book is for you.
*For those with triggers, be sure to check them before you start this.*
I listened to most of this story on audio and thought the narrators were great.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2019SPOILER ALERT **
I’m going to review and vent a little about this story so if you don’t want to know any details skip this one.
First I did enjoy the story. It had me hooked and I became invested in these two people from the very first chapter. I love this authors writing. Having said this....I seriously was thinking pretty often how truly bone headed this guy was. I understand that as a much younger version of himself he was on the wrong road. I can see how he figures out before it’s too late that he needs to change or his life will be lost. I can even understand and empathize with his connection he feels reading the news article about the loss of Roses parents when she was a teen. I get all this. But did it not occur to you that by telling this girl this at that moment you are only cementing her ideas that she’s nothing but a tool or a symbol of your sobriety?? Julian states from the moment he laid eyes on her he knew who she was. And from speaking to her just briefly he can see she’s not some typical groupie or fan girl. But yet he treats her like one repeatedly. He pursues her even when in his own mind he’s involved with another woman. When he finally kisses her it’s after he’s become engaged to another woman (that day) for goodness sake and yet he does it anyway. He sleeps with her the first time and then basically blows her off not giving her any explanation of why he’s bailed. Then because Rose is a slight idiot too it happens yet again. And AGAIN he bails. Not to mention when he has his accident and everyone thinks he could be going to die and the one person he’s calling out to is her you think ...ok when life is almost lost this is the ah hah moment and it’s all clear.....But nooo... after reaching his bedside and promising him she’d stay and wait he makes it through his surgery and what’s the first thing he does? He ditches her AGAIN! Then he comes back to her yet again to apologize and make amends and by this time she’s been yo yo’d around so much of course she’s not ready or eager to sign up for that. But he states he’s in love with her so she’s thinking hmmm could this really be something???.....But since Rose also has her own share of past trauma she’s weary and unsure if she can let down her guard and truly trust and allow him or anyone in. So she tells him she needs time...understandably. But does he show good faith and give her that? Nooo he’s sleeping with the daughter of his first AA sponsor while he’s killing time and waiting. And when this comes to light he says that he had no idea if she would ever come around or not. And since they were technically nothing at the time he used this girl for comfort. Gee...that’s what every woman wants to hear. You love her so much that you can’t even keep it in your pants for 6 weeks while she works things out. An issue she might not have struggled so much with if you hadn’t been waffling back and forth about your own feelings and what you wanted from day one.
Now before you get mad at me for picking on poor hot but tortured Julian I will say Rose had her own issues with her moms death and her childhood. She definitely had things she needed to face and work out. So she wasn’t entirely a victim in this. She couldn’t truly commit to him. But under the circumstances I think she had to wonder if there was really anything solid to commit too? Julian’s feelings for her seemed as solid as quick sand numerous times. Enough to give anyone pause.
Overall I did enjoy the story. I liked Rose wanted to smack Julian pretty often but couldn’t help but like him too....sometimes
And I admit it had a great ending. And if I’m honest maybe the story while frustrating was more believable because it was about two very flawed people?
It was a great read. Love this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
I read another book by this author, who was new to me, not too long ago so when I found out about this book I just had to read it and I am so, so glad I did! It was amazing and I absolutely loved the characters most especially the secondary ones such as Greta, Owen, Matt, Melody and, of course, our hero and heroine, Julian and Rose. I could very well do with a Katherine in my life! The themes within the book were not easy going but very well handled. I could simply not put this book down at all and would highly recommend it if you like rock bands and angst in your books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely rockstar romance.
This one hit me in the feels.. I cried a bit, this book is high on the drama scales. I'll be honest and say the FMCs anxiety triggered me a bit..
But if you love a grand rockstar romance, this is well worth the ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angst romance at it's best
Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh........ the cover for this book has been changed. I loved the old cover. Oh well, at least it's still the old image on the cover of my Audible version of this wonderful story.
I've become addicted to rockstar romances, but there are a lot of bad ones. This is one of my favorites. I decided to leave this review after rereading it yet again. I love to revisit my favorite love stories to reconnect with heroines who become old friends and the men who have to prove to me that they deserve these women. I have a weakness for artistically talented women with deep emotional scars and Rose is perfect in this way. Intelligent, feisty, independent, loving but hurt by a musically gifted drug addict mother, Rose creates music because she has to. It's part of her soul. Enter Julian, a critically acclaimed, commercially successful indi star who is twelve years sober when they meet. He's beautiful and magnetic, and everything Rose knows she should stay away from, but chemistry is hard to resist. Strong secondary characters like Julian's band mates, Rose's friends and family, including an eccentric clairvoyant aunt, help move the plot forward, but I was glad they were there to support Rose through the angst. She's such a wonderful, sensitive soul, that I would have suffered uncomfortably through the rock star drama without their emotional support. This book ends with a truly wonderful epilogue from Julian's POV that let me know she was in good hands - because all readers know that our favorite characters live on outside their books!

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet
It’s a sweet read with many bumps along the way, but you get so attached to Rose and her quirky aunt and of course Julian that it was over before you knew it
