Bring the Fire (The Wisdom's Grave Trilogy Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 825 ratings

“We brought you here to answer a single question. God is dead. Vanessa Roth and Marie Reinhart are responsible. We want to know how they did it.”

That was where the story began. This is where it all ends.

Believing her lover has been killed, Nessa — the living archetype of the wicked witch and a fairy tale brought to murderous life — flies across the Mojave Desert on a mission of vengeance. Meanwhile, Marie is stranded on a dystopian parallel Earth, forced to confront her own dark side as she comes face to face with the architect of an insidious plot. Their quest will take them from candlelit caverns to a bloody, rain-soaked gunfight in the heart of the Vegas Strip; from the ruins of an ancient occult battlefield, where unspeakable creatures prowl derelict warships, to the very gates of heaven.

Nessa and Marie are characters from the first story ever told, trapped in an endless cycle of tragedy, death, and rebirth. But not this time. They’re hunting for their creator, for the answers and for the justice they’ve been denied. They’re hunting for their happily-ever-after, determined to rewrite their story’s ending once and for all. And God help anyone who stands in their way.

Craig Schaefer writes about witches, outlaws, and outsiders. Whether they’re weaving tales of an occult-shrouded New York in Ghosts of Gotham or the gritty streets of Boston in the Charlie McCabe series, their protagonists are damaged survivors searching for answers, redemption, or maybe just that one big score.

You know you're in for a ride when the first line of the book is "Trilogies have rules". The entire Wisdom's Grave trilogy is at its core an exploration of storytelling tropes wrapped in a cracking good heroic fantasy. And just as the Scribe says at the start of the book, this one follows the lines of an epic hero's quest. Or rather the epic quest of a Witch and her Knight to find Wisdom's Grave.

One of the things which attracted me to this series (and all of Schaefer's writing) is that the Witch isn't a "Good Witch". Nope, she's very much a "Bad Witch". Which makes the story ever so much more delicious - there aren't ANY traditional "good folks" and "bad folks" here, just "complicated folks you like" and "complicated folks you don't like".

And Schaefer wraps the entire thing in a meta discussion of storytelling and the nature of "Story". When I got to Chapter 43, I freaked out a big in delight (you'll understand my feelings, Dear Reader, when you reach that place in the Story).

Well worth reading for not-so-heroic Heros and oh-so-villainous villains. And an amazing rollercoaster of a ride.

Loved the book but hated ending the trilogy, enjoyed the way all characters joined up for the mission to cure Vanessa. Hopefully this isn’t the end of Vanessa’s and Marie’s story, I’ve got to see this through to the end of the kings of men or god retaking the throne

This book, in fact this whole trilogy is just SOOOO good. I began reading Craig Schaefer with the Daniel Faust books and continued on through the Revanche Cycle and the Harmony Black books and the Wisdom's Grave books are such a testament to what a truly great writer Schaefer has become. Nessa and Marie are The Witch and the Knight, two of the characters in the First Story, written by the Creator to be reborn, over and over in an effort to redeem the world and what it was meant to be. Schaefer began laying the groundwork for this series back in the Faust books when Faust was arbitrarily named The Thief in an effort to enable the real Thief to escape the consequences of The Story and Schaefer has sent the narrative rolling slowly downhill, picking up speed and detail, becoming bigger and more complicated, until the fate of the whole Multiverse is at stake. Nessa herself is not a particularly likeable hero, but Marie grounds her and together they set out to kill God Himself, if that's what it takes to end the cycle of death and reincarnation and rebirth that has so far defined their lives. It's a wild, crazy story that delights and surprises on every page. I can't wait to see what comes next.

Bringing all the books to an end in such a grand way must have been a tall task, but Craig Schaefer did it! So satisfying to have so many questions answered and explained. I am not a religious person but I am seriously considering joining whatever religion this is, because the philosophy behind the universe and our maker, our history, and our purpose is not only deeply human (that is to say flawed and relatable) but also hopeful and moving.

Wow, it was totally worth the wait.

Craig's books turned me from someone who dread reading (because of a mandatory-reading-filled childhood) into someone who loves reading for fun! I already read all his books AND pre-ordered his future books. Now I have to find some books to fill the time before his next book comes out!

I loved this, even with the story cross overs it was still a fun and beautiful read. I loved Nessa character, though she did come off as feminine anger incarnate but hey, what’s wrong with that. It actually made me like it more to be honest. Sometimes it is black and white, sometimes there is no other course but anger. Why should we be the reasonable ones when no one else is? Anyway, it’s a fun read that didn’t have a ton of annoying troupes for once.

Couldn't be less than 5 stars. Amazing finish to my favourite trilogy. There was some interesting plot twists, sad and happy moments, lot of blood and of course a non stop action. Finish wasn't what I thought it would be, but Craig didn't disappoint and wrapped everything up with style. This trilogy is over, but there's so much to the story I can't believe we won't see some aspect of it in next Daniel Faust and Harmony Black books, mostly because they took huge part in what happened in Wisdom's Grave.

I read book 2 and book 3 back to back having read book 1 a while ago and enjoyed the story to its conclusion. The mixing of the Nessa/Marie and their previous incarnations gave the characters a different direction to solve their problems and defeat their enemies. Lots of twists and turns.
Now have Ghosts of Gotham to read next.

Excellent, even if I already knew the ending from the Harmony Black series.
Superb characters and a gripping, convoluted plot that kept me hooked from start to finish.
OK CS, I forgive you for the spoiler and glad I stuck with it.
    Onward to Daniel Faust !

Sometimes you just need a few books that will sweep you along with excitement and crazy adventures, whilst you hide in lockdown fron Covid. These were admirably entertaining and fun.
