- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024... the Val Ryker series. Just finished books 1 & 2 and am going to go look for more. Ann Voss Peterson is now a beloved author. Amazing characters that have you loving or hating them - not a lot of in between. The storyline in this series is continuous, so MUST be read in order. They're great stand-alones, but trust me, you'll be happier starting with book one and the first delicious word that Peterson writes. WELL DONE!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2015Before you make the wrong conclusion about this great book, I have to warn you that I had to use the same criteria with this book as I have with others. Therefore, I am going to give this book a four star rather than a five star. I had to do with a 1-2 page MSB (Moaning & Sweating Bodies.) In this case it was revolting and so not needed to establish the deep relationship between Val and David despite of the monkey between them.
Now to the book, It was a great mystery and every time I thought I had it nailed down, the author administered a whiplash. Finally I gave up trying to solve the mystery. All Characters are so real that it is easy to follow a red herring.
There is a third member of the crime solving team that needs to be give a bit At-a-boy, or more properly At-a-girl. Maybe the author will give her a better billing the next time.
Do not hesitate reading this book; just skip the “turned down corner” pages.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2015When I got this book, I didn't realize (yeah, I should have read a little closer) that this was #2. I'm glad I didn't notice, because I wouldn't have read it, instead waiting until I got the first one.
Even though it's #2 in a series, it is a book that can be read alone. I have a feeling that each book will be that way. You don't have to invest in the series because each book will give you enough background to read it and not feel lost.
Val and Lund....what can you say? Great together, and as the "heroes" of the book, they are as likable as your own friends....filled with doubts, insecurities, and just trying to get through each day as well as they can. Hess, the monster....reminiscent of Hannibal Lechter, he's an all too believable evil man.
I was thrilled to find references to one of my favorite characters...Jack Daniels, from Konrath's books. I had read a few of them, and found her totally likable. After a little search right here on Amazon, I found that J.A. Konrath had teamed up with Ann Voss Peterson to write some of the Jack Daniels series. Hopefully we'll see a little more of Jack in upcoming books.
This book held my interest, first page to last. In fact, it kept me up late, and kept me sitting when I should have been washing clothes, until I read the last page. Can't wait to get the next one!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2019I love a good mystery, but this was mostly a frantically paced montage of confusion. Add to that one very strange foray into a detailed, very personal scene, coming out of the blue. Then back to frantic confusion. And then more frantic confusion. Frankly, I was glad when I finally managed to cross the finish line. I was sometimes unsure I even wanted to do that. I consider the three stars I gave it to be generous.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2015Lots of twists and turns but there were so many, that it often came across as the police just bumbling through every lead they got. My biggest issue with the book is that there wasn't really any resolution at the end of the book. ***Spoilers***
The book opens with the bad guy being two days out from sentencing, so naturally you assume everyone is going to go full out looking for the missing teenager and the missing toddler, but no, they're all so wrapped up in this sentencing that searching for the missing kids is kind of an after thought. The writing was engaging and kept me involved, but at the end, the bad guy (believe his name was Hess) escapes and boom...that's it. I wish I could say more about this one, but my kindle died this morning so I can't access the book.
Well worth the time to read, but be prepared to get pulled into the next in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2015Never read this author before. Got this free to review. She does very well creating REALISTIC, whole characters whom I felt I got to know. Using the frustrations of an understaffed cop department in a small town filled with fires and kidnappings just added to the SUSPENSE. It ended without an end...ready for Book3 but real police work is hard and never ending and catching the bad guy doesn't have to end a book. TALENTED AUTHOR----I will read more of her work. ( The only part I skimmed was a few at her graphic oral sex scene between two main characters. I don't read suspense books to read this. Authors need to know good books don't need to be good. Very distracting to the plot suspense).
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2019Firebug is on a rampage and with each more deadly, in this small town. Val is the detective, and has a growing interest in David. Good plot with enough twists, and a love interest to keep one interested to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2014FABULOUS blend of suspense, plot twists, action, interesting characters, and humor with a little conflicted and very hot romance thrown in! Few authors can actually make me sit down and read. Ann Voss Peterson grabs me, shakes me and throws me into a chair until I finish her book! Her characters live in my head long after turning the last page of her book. The villain of this book is icy, brilliant, despicable yet somehow alluring. The heroine is tough, protective and also vulnerable, making her a believable character. I LOVED every minute I spent reading it and can't WAIT for the next novel in the series, Dead Too Soon! When is that coming out Ms. Voss Peterson???

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of twists & turns. Enjoyed!
It has been 3 years since I read the first book of this series, but it didn't seem to matter. I got hooked right away. Lots of twists, turns & intrigue. Starting the next book right away. Quick easy read that kept me interested. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars is that there was no ending so I actually have no choice but to read the next book.
I did notice that Val was accidentally referred to as Aunt Grace at one point. The odd little typo on the Kindle edition, but not bad.

4.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed reading this book
I really enjoyed reading this book. Although the story is predictable in some areas, the characters are well developed, they are by no means perfect and you can relate to them and feel empathy towards them which is key for me when I read a story. I have to confess that I liked having the chief of police being a woman, it's a nice change. And, contrary to some reviewers, I don't think it really mattered that I had not read the first book before starting this one.
