Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User 2nd Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

Cakewalk synthesizers are some of the most powerful and widely used synthesizers. Now in its second edition, Cakewalk Synthesizers: From Presets to Power User is the comprehensive resource to help users harness the power of these amazing tools and show you how to get the best results from Cakewalk's complete range of synthesizers. The book begins by diving into the general principles of synthesis and sound creation-covering, among other topics, oscillators, different synthesis methods, filters, envelopes, LFOs, and effects-and then moves on to look at how to make your own sounds, which can be used in your own productions. Separate chapters focus on each synthesizer, looking at its range of uses, the tools that are available, and how to set it up for day-to-day use. The chapters cover Triangle II, PSYN II, Pentagon I, Z3TA+, Session Drummer 2 and Session Drummer 3, Dimension LE and Dimension Pro, Rapture LE and Rapture, and Beatscape, and in the (free) accompanying download package, the chapters cover sfz and sfz+, Cyclone, RXP, DropZone, Square I, DreamStation, Roland GrooveSynth, and TTS-1. In addition, there is a revised and expanded section dedicated to the SFZ format, Cakewalk's powerful sample format (which has also been adopted by other leading synthesizer developers), and undocumented features in the synthesizers are also highlighted. Chances are you won't have every synthesizer covered in this book. That's okay, because the book has something for everyone, whether you own all the synths or only use the free Cakewalk synthesizers. It's also useful if you want to learn about synthesis. Simply put, this is the ultimate guide to learning about synthesizer programming and to understanding and using all of Cakewalk's synthesizers!

This book I have read and keep going back to and over various parts. I have completely changed the way I use most of the synths and add-ons in Sonar. I have now reworked a lot of what I did earlier with totally different ideas. I have not yet been able to cover everything(there is just so much to cover).

Since reading this book I have been reading several of the How to Make a Noise books by Simon Cann and recommend all of them but for Cakewalk users Cakewalk Synthesizers From Presets to Power User"" is a must.

If you want to use these synths, the latest ones are free (Rapture Pro, z3ta+2). You download them from the Gibson website and use the Bandlab app to activate them offline. I don't know for how long they will allow this. They are interesting synths and there are presets available if you search (free and $10 downloads). You can learn a lot about synthesis in general by playing around with them, but they have not been updated in quite a while, so the true wavetable synths might be better to focus your sound design learning efforts around. I think this is a limited printing so once these are gone, the price will stay steady or go up. You can get a lot of what you need from the user guides, but this is nice for "completeness". I'd like to see this offered as PDF with a Pay What You Want Patreon link.

For someone who was just beginning to mess with the synthesizer world this book was a great help. Sometimes all the knobs and settings could be a bit much but this book breaks it down for you in easy to understand directions. Wish there were more downloadable content. But like the book the way it is. Great Job!

I have only just opened the cover - I'm something of a Newbie with respect to music software, and this book appears to have sufficient guidance to get me started in the process of using the soft synths that come with Sonar X3 Studio and a general introduction to the process of extending the product with other purchases.

    Good book

This is the book for you if you have an interest in digital synthesizers. The first hundred pages describe how to create music using any synthesizer. Several of the Cakewalk synthesizers described are available free and download links are provided. The author, Simon Cann, has his own site where illustrative sound samples can be downloaded.

Simon Cann describes complex information in an understandable manner. The illustrations are wonderful. The book would appeal as much to beginners as to experts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin!

If you are into computer music, and synthesisers in particular, and ever wondered how they work and how to program them, then this is the book for you. If all you want to do is know how to use the synthesiser and not worry too much about how it works and why, then this book is still for you. However, whilst it will help the beginner to use them it goes into much more depth than that. You get to know the different sounds to start with and how the oscillators and other facilities work to change and modify the sound to produce that distinctive synthesiser sound. Best of all it gives you the confidence to experiment and maybe you will come up with a sound that is unique. A bit hard to 'read' at times, but the beauty of this book is how the book is set out; each chapter deals with one particular synth, so its a breeze to dip in to the chapter that just deals with the synth you are using. For anyone who likes to fiddle with their synthsiser, and wants to know why something does what it does, then this book is essential. Recommended.

A handy reference manual for Sonar but when I checked how to save a preset in Z3TA, that was not in the book! I had to refer to the help within Sonar to find out how to save. Surely the books should cover such a basic requirement?

Very comprehensive book if you're into Cakewalk. I personally wanted it just for the opcodes at the back and am not disappointed.
