It’s in the tiny town of Embarrass where she learns more about Julia Desjardin. The city prosecutor is cool, professional, and untouchable. But she and Cassidy have history, and Cassidy isn’t going to let her easily forget that.
For all their surface differences, Cassidy and Julia have more in common than they first realized—both are reluctant to hand over their pasts to be judged and studied. But it might take someone just as damaged as the other to help each cope with the skeletons in their respective closets.

About the author

Writing has always been a part of my life. I wrote my first "novel" in 5th grade when I wanted to be a marine biologist. This career choice was short lived; Judy Blume's "Starring Sally J. Freedman as Herself" scared me away from oceans forever. So I wrote about them instead. "Mutation in the Sea" told the story of twin siblings who, like a Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys Super Mystery, solved cases that even the most astute police officer couldn't decipher.
Today, I'm a historian with a passion for fiction. Some of the best-loved lesbian pulp fiction novels from the 1950s and 1960s inspired me to write my own stories--works like Claire Morgan's "The Price of Salt," and Anne Bannon's "Beebo Brinker" series. I understand the long tradition of romance fiction and its importance in the lives of women readers.
I also publish urban fantasy and paranormal novels under the name E.L. Blaisdell. I write stories filled with angst, miscommunication, and the struggle to balance love and an ambitious career. My characters are not without their flaws, but despite these imperfections, they ultimately find their own happy endings.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2014Wow, this book was awesome! I often lament about how difficult it is to find good lesbian fiction that isn't too tragic but still has depth, and this story was a perfect fit for me. The opening was a little slow, and occasionally I skimmed some of the non-vital description towards the beginning, but the book really found its rhythm once Cassidy arrives in Embarrass.
I'll be the first to admit that I love the prickly ice queen trope, and Julia fit the bill. She was such an interesting character-- refined and elegant, cold, and perfectly cognizant of how she appeared to people. She gave me the flutters. Cassidy was also easy to like: a little awkward, a little shy, and a lot of fun once she let her guard down. She was so earnest and imperfect, I fell in love with her, too. While there was some 'good sex can cure all ills!' business, the book does mention that Cassidy has received prior professional help for her PTSD and she is seeing a therapist towards the end of the book.
The details felt very well-researched, authentic, and mostly unobtrusive. The characters were all enjoyable people to be around, the sort of folks you'd see in your every day life (save for the villain, who was sort of cardboard and mostly off-screen). The setting was quaint but not kitschy. My only real complaint was that the ending was rushed, and I'd have liked to see some further resolution of the final conflict, but the rest of the book was so good I'd feel guilty for knocking it down a star.
If you're looking for a contemporary that's sweet but not too fluffy, this is an excellent choice.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2025This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and it was very enjoyable. One bone I have to pick, however, is that in so many of the books I’ve read, when mentioning the resemblance between a character and her parent(s), remember the parent(s) came first. It’s the characters resemblance to a parent, not the opposite. I can’t say how many times I’ve come across the same error in the many books I’ve read.
Overall, I really liked this book, and look forward to reading the next book in the series. I enjoy reading stories featuring the military, medical personnel, and first responders. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2020I loved this book even though it was written awhile back and I gave it five stars but I was really bothered by a couple of facts. I just loved the vulnerability of Cassidy and all she went through. Carrying such burdens after her years in service and just trying to exist in a world with no wars. Her strength is trying to get herself better was aspiring to say the least. Enter Julia and the tough tight and on edge personality challenged Cassidy when then see each other again in another town. Julia is the one who is very forward in taking from Cassidy and finding Cassidy never really sure what they had between them. As they developed a non committed relationship, Cassidy was also trying to fit in a new very small and quiet town now on their police force. After her partner uncovers something sinister going on with funds that were not being sent to the town as needed, Cassidy helps out with the investigation and when they come to the truth she is faced with Julia head on. Julia being who she is, defends her father at the expense of Cassidy and in the interim ruins her reputation, the solid case and ultimately Cassidy. The two parts I didn’t like were when they go to cabin to retrieve Cassidy’s bike it says Julia’s father car is there but when they go in cabin no mention of him there even though Julia discovered papers. Also knowing how Cassidy was so vulnerable using what she learned against her was like the ultimate in betrayal. So how could she ever forgive her. Hopefully I will get that answer in the next book. I still loved the story and it was well written. It definitely touched on the heartbreaking feeling readers were feeling.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2014Not your typical love story is only the beginning when trying to encompass this wonderful story of two women that slowly tear down each other's defences to find love. Cassidy, a former Marine suffering from PTSD likes to eat cheeseburgers, wear jeans, and ride a Harley and Julia, an attorney with impeccable taste in clothing and equally bred as well meet in a bar and somehow can't ignore their initial physical attration, which at times borders on violent it is so hot. Despite the initial desperately hot physical attraction, gradually each sees in each other a certain tenderness, and maybe even a little understanding and safety. The journey they take together is full of emotion and angst which the author has craftily woven into a fantastic story. It's obvious there was a lot personal love written in this story by the author since the setting takes place in a tiny town in northern Minnesota called Embarass. Yes, it does exist and it's nestled amonst thousands of acres of beautiful forest and crystal clear lakes. The fact that I live in the Twin Cities myself made this a joy to read because she got all the Minneosta mannerisms dead-on. I hope you enjoy this story as much as I did
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2016It's well written, the characters are lovely ...
however, possibly the most boring plot I've ever had to muddle through ...
damn you reviewers and your 5 stars.... the desperate lesbian phenomena strikes again..
I'm struggling to finish it, as I'm so bored
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2022I am fairly new to reading this genre, but I do find this series very enjoyable and completely engaging. I love reading about the complexities of these characters, what they encounter and how they work through them. This is not a typical love story at all, but definitely worth the read.
I would like to read a novella of Cassidy and Julia's initial encounter and then after their first sexual encounter from Julia's perspective. I love this couple and hope there's another book on the horizon.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2024Only criticism I have is Julia calling Cassidy dear but other than that a damn good story will continue series

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must read
I loved this story. Cassidy is just out of a 2 term stint with the Marines including a tour in Afganistan. She was a police officer in Mineapolis but after having problems coping with her PTSD she is heading north to a small town where she hopes a simpler life will help her cope. There she meets Julia again a women she first met in a bar in Mineapolis.. I can't judge how accurate the military and PTSD details were but they felt real. And for me that emotional validity is what counts. The connection between Cassidy and Julia is very intense. The story mainly follows Cassidy as she learns how to live outside of the military. This is a very good story with lots of twists and turns. I have read all of Ms. Lentzski's books and this up to her usual high standard. A must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly well written engaging read
Really, really enjoyed this and am almost through the remainder of the series. I read a LOT and what prompted me to review this was the complexities of the relationship that ensued. The story wasn’t just about a drama or a crime but about the people, the characters & I loved that the series delves deeply into them. Eliza studies the in and outs and the whys in depth creating honesty in the characters that is missing a lot of the time in books such as this. I would highly recommend this entire series and will be eagerly looking for the rest of Eliza’s works.

5.0 out of 5 stars I adore this unique little gem of a book!
As an indication of how much I love this book, I am currently reading it for the fourth time since its release. This is unheard of for me. I read loads of lesbian fiction and I hardly write reviews but I felt I have to express my complete adoration of this book. Eliza Lentzski is by far one of my favourite authors of this genre (yes, I've read all her work!). She is a fantastic writer and story teller and I love everything about this book.......the way it's written, the two lead characters, the plot....... I just wish it was longer because I simply cannot get enough (hence why I've read it numerous times!). For me personally, I love a bit of romance and this is a truly wonderful love story. I think being a little in love with the two lead character helps. Someone else wrote how it's about a 'melting of hearts'. That's a wonderful way to describe this book and it does make me feel all gooey inside! Absolutely love it, it really is a unique little gem in my eyes.
