Cara: Builder Of Dún Daen : A Short, Clean, Historical Irish Novella (Maids Of Ulaid Book 2) Kindle Edition
She mends broken buildings. But will her own heart get broken as she tries to mend his?
Cara’s talent as a designer and architect has led her father to depend on her help with his building projects. Their work is in demand all over the region and Cara finds herself taking on greater responsibilities with each project.
When her father is injured, Cara is forced to take on a commission without his help. She soon finds herself working at the fortress of Dún Daen at the request of its new lord, Eochaid Fáelad.
The renovation is intended for Eochaid’s betrothed, Aoife, but before the work is finished, Aoife ends the betrothal. Eochaid is devastated and Cara quietly helps him to move forward, her kindness soothing his wounded heart. As they work together to bring the project to completion, they realize that their feelings for each other have been growing. A passionate kiss at midnight leaves Cara longing for a life with Eochaid.
But soon after, Aoife returns and declares that they will be wed when the work is finished. Eochaid does nothing to contradict her and leaves the fortress to make arrangements.
Cara is devastated at his betrayal. Will Eochaid return and claim her for his own? Or will the other woman win his heart?
This short, clean novella is set in Ireland in the days of the great kings; a time when Vikings raided, clans fought and adventure lurked around every corner.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis little book was so well done that I learned some Gaelic with no effort at all. The main character is
a young woman builder with the events taking place on the middle ages. She is rather unusual for her tomes havong learned her trade as a builder by working with her father. The writer made an absolutely brilliant idea and did not even make any of the book's characters show any surprise at her femininity in any way. Cara was young , strong, intelligent and I enjoyed geyting to know her. The new lord of Dun Daen was young , good looking , intelligent and accepted her plans for his home and worked along with Cara instead of instead of deciding that a woman could not do the job. This is a short novelette but I expect I will soon be looking for another of her books to read. I give this book 4 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEnjoyed all stories in this series. Each gave a unique understanding of who the main character was, and in this story, of how that woman's unusual place as a builder might have been perceived during the age when Vikings first invaded Scotland.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe writing in these stories is spare, but there is still a lot of action & the emotions & moral character of the people comes through very well! I enjoyed reading this little gem!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis novella gives a brief story and glimpse into what it could be like in the past. The intrigue of treaties and dealing with treat of war.
The author writes well and the characters are easy to see and understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2022Format: KindleCara proves herself able to build same as her father who taught her even though she is a woman. Nice short story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020Format: KindleLoved the story of Cara, the builder which is unheard of during this era, but Cara learns from her father. A letter is received to the builder without addressing them by name, so Cara’s father tells her to go, that she’s ready to build on her own. When she arrives at Dun Dean, the Lord is expecting her father. Cara convinces the Lord Eochaid that she can accomplish the renovations that he has requested, but when his betrothed cancels their engagement for another, he feels betrayed. Cara continues to work & Eochaid is impressed by Cara and enjoys her company. But what happens when his betrothed returns and plans on marring Lord Eochaid? You’ll need to read the book to find out!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2020Format: KindleWhat a delightful story this was! Cara was a builder in a man's world. Her father sent her when a master builder was called for in Dún Daen. The new Laird was shocked to say the least. They worked together to do renovations on Dún Daen. Would it be good enough for the Laird's finance or not? Read this delightful story for yourself and find out.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020Format: KindleI really enjoyed this book where a young woman worked directly in construction of a castle. She quickly moved on to a contract as an architect and builder on the construction to an addition to a castle, which I found quite interesting. I would have liked her to have more hands on descriptions of her work, rather than skipping over what could have been some interesting details of the job. The only real drawback was the short length of the story, but with that it was very interesting and encourages me to find more of this nature from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dnf
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really like her stories. However, I cannot deal with the amount of "foreign" words and terminology that disrupts the flow, and you have NO idea what they mean. If there is a glossary, it does not help when on an ebook, as it is not easy to flick back and forth. Disappointing.
