Belle, Book and Candle (The Witches of Castle Clair 1) Kindle Edition

Do you believe in magic?

Sky St Clair doesn't, and growing up in Castle Clair, a small town renowned for its mystical past and magical legends, she never felt she belonged. Sky got away from Castle Clair as soon as she could, but when a run of bad luck leaves her homeless and jobless, she has little choice but to accept her sister Star's invitation to return home for the festive season.

When Star has an accident, Sky finds herself running the family's magical supplies shop. Wands, crystals, pendulums... Really? It's a tough job when she doesn't believe in the products she's selling, but how can she? Magic isn't real, no matter what her deluded siblings think.

Jethro Richmond doesn't believe in magic either. In fact, he doesn't believe in anything much any more, which is proving to be a bit of a problem for a writer of fantasy novels. With a self-constructed wall around his heart as high as Clair Tower, and his dreams as ruined as the town’s ancient castle, he's lost all hope of repairing his tattered career.

The last thing he needs is to get involved with a family like the St Clairs, and no matter what a certain little black cat seems to want Jethro has no intention of spending any time with Sky or her unusual sisters.

But this is a strange little town and, as the residents prepare to celebrate Christmas, Sky and Jethro might just discover that in Castle Clair, anything is possible.

Even magic.

The Witches of Castle Clair books are non-steamy, lighthearted paranormal romances, written in British English. They should be read in order for your best reading experience.

Another wonderful book by Sharon Booth. This one is a little different from her others but still is firmly sited in Yorkshire's beauty and customs. The St. Clair sisters live in the town of Castle Clair; their family owns the ruined castle and other parts of the town. Sky, the youngest, tried to get away, but since she lost her job and boyfriend, she decided to take recoup her losses when a Yule invitation from her sisters brings her home. Her family has a legacy of magic, but Sky doesn't believe in it, doubting her families' beliefs. On the train home, she meets Jethro, a man who's suffered his own losses.
I do love Sky and Jethro (and Belle). Their story is filled with magic, both figuratively and literally. All the characters are well-drawn and lots of fun with great descriptions and some humorous scenes. And there's a great addition of the Celtic story of the Oak King and the Holly King. It's just my cup of tea.
This is another great story by Ms. Booth. I'm so glad this is going to be a series because I need to know what happens to the rest of the family: Star, Celeste, and Sirius. There are delicious hints scattered throughout this story, and I can't wait.

While this story moves very slowly, it is an okay read. Now that all is revealed, the future books should be awesome!

What a cute story, reminds me of my grandmother and her Irish storytelling. You feel like your there in the small magical place where anything possible.

A good read about a family who have had magic and witches in their history. She though doesn't believe in magic but having been made redundant, caught her boyfriend cheating and then been given two weeks notice at her flat, she's got nowhere to go but home. Now she finds out that her sister split up with her longterm boyfriend, her brother has escaped to Ireland after the tragic death of his soulmate and her mother is still wandering the world. Her family firmly believe in witchcraft but she thinks they are delusional. This is her journey to remember her past and forge a new future with the man she met on the train. Good characters - well developed and rounded.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very special book, with a real touch of magic
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 18, 2018
I’ll admit that, until I started reading, the magic – and the mentions of “witch lit” I’d noticed on social media – did worry me just a little. But that was so very wrong of me – this book was simply wonderful. The magic is all wrapped up with family and relationships – all done in a lovely natural matter-of-fact way, and totally believable. And I can’t believe I just said that – but by the time I reached the end of this beautiful story, I was more than happy to accept the existence of witches, spells sustained by candles, magic wands, travelling distances in the blink of an eye and so much more. It helped a lot that Sky shared my early scepticism – unexpectedly finding herself running sister Star’s magic supplies shop, learning about the three types of customers (such a lovely touch!) and their purchases, discovering the power of crystals and candles, and that all wands aren’t necessarily black with a white tip.

And as well as being a story about a family and their secrets, this is a rather lovely romance too – I loved the developing relationship between Sky and Jethro, his sadness and the loss of his writing ability (and of fantasy too – what a great idea), their lunches at the shop, and the preparations for the Christmas magic show were just wonderful. I loved Sky’s chaotic but loving family, the relationships wonderfully drawn – and I very much liked Castor and his part in the story. But the undoubted star has to be Belle, the characterful little black cat who decides that the shop is where she wants to be, and who draws together and walks through so many of the story’s threads.

There was nothing I didn’t love about this book. The writing is excellent – I really liked the characters and their interactions, the gentle humour, the moments of drama and disagreement, and the whole structure and concept of the lovely story. Sharon Booth is a natural storyteller, and I was totally caught up in the web she wove through to the final page. And I really must mention the vividly drawn setting – Castle Clair is based on Knaresborough, which I know very well, and I really liked the way she used details I recognised, infused them with all the tastes and smells of Christmas and then added a sprinkle of real magic. A very special book, and despite its Christmas content, one that you could enjoy every bit as much as I did at any time of the year. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to Castle Clair…

It’s absolutely brilliant! A bit different from the previous books by Sharon Booth and equally heartwarming. Full of twists and turns it also encourages the reader to follow many reading paths. So much more than fiction!
Romance with a magic twist, it’s another winner!

It’s over three years since Sky St Clair left the pretty town of Castle Clair, the ancestral home of her family. She is returning reluctantly, forced to swallow her pride and stay with her two sisters, after losing her job, boyfriend and home in one fell swoop. She loves Star and Celeste, of course she does, it was just…the legend and the family business. She just didn’t—couldn’t—believe in all that magic stuff despite the family legacy.

Jethro Richmond, fantasy writer and a man who is dealing with loss of a different kind altogether, is travelling to Castle Clair on the same train as Sky. His dreams are shattered and all hope is lost. But this is Castle Clair, a town built on myth and magic where anything is possible.

When Star has an accident and dislocates her shoulder leaving her unable to work at her shop, The Broom Closet, it falls to Sky to step in and volunteer despite her misgivings.

Belle, Book and Christmas Candle is a delightful read. Anything lightheartedly witchy and magical is a draw for me and I love browsing in shops like The Broom Closet. The characters are well defined and engaging, I love the developing relationship between Sky and Jethro and how Sky battles with herself until she can’t deny the truth anymore.

The story is told from Sky’s perspective and is structured well with drama, humour and magic. Sharon Booth’s writing is lovely, easy to read with descriptive imagery. I wasn’t able to second guess several twists and enjoyed the way Sky came to terms with working in the shop, and Belle, the little black cat, that kept visiting added to the magic. Looking forward to following up with Star’s story.

5.0 out of 5 stars For a little magic and sparkle in your life, I can’t recommend this enough
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 4, 2018
With all the doom and gloom in the world at the moment, we could all use a little magic in our lives and the latest book from Sharon Booth gives us exactly that.

Things have gone horribly wrong for Sky. With no job and no home, she reluctantly returns to her hometown of Castle Clair to stay with her sisters, Star and Celeste. Although she adores her sisters, she doesn’t adore her return to Castle Clair; the small town where she never felt she belonged and from which she had happily escaped years earlier.

Castle Clair thrives on a heritage of myths and magic and Sky’s family embrace this completely. Star runs a magical supplies shop and Celeste works in the castle’s magic museum. And they don’t just sell magic; they absolutely believe in it which Sky finds absurd because there’s no way magic exists. Or does it?

She’s not the only one who doesn’t believe in magic. Writer Jethro used to believe but the magic has gone from his life – a tad inconvenient given that he writes fantasy books – and he can’t see himself every believing in magic again. Therefore, the last thing he wants to do is get involved with Sky whose family embrace all things magical.

But Belle the cat seems to have other ideas.

I’ll stop there because to say any more would be giving away spoilers and this book is full of delightful twists and turns that keep those pages turning.

I’ve read all of Sharon Booth’s books and would have to say I’m a huge fan of her work. She exudes warmth in her writing and her characters are always realistic and the sort of people you imagine being friends with. In this book, I loved the interactions with Sky and her sisters as she struggles to make sense of her new life back in Castle Clair and I adored Belle the cat.

Although it’s set in December, I’d say that this book can easily be read at any time of year; not just Christmas. For a little magic and sparkle in your life, I can’t recommend this enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Christmas book I have read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 17, 2018
I liked everything about this book,it is a Christmas read because of the setting, the festival of 'yule' and the anniversary of a legend. Sky St Clair finds herself in a situation where she has no choice but to return home, moving in with her two sisters in a house and (fictional I think but totally believable) town in Yorkshire that thrives off myths and legends about witchcraft. The characters were so real, their names their suggestion of mystery. Who is this bloke Sky meets on the train? Who does this cat belong to that seems to have made itself at home in the family shop? Why won't her sister blow out that candle? I wanted to know, but then I didn't want it to end!
