Phineas Troutt Series - Three Thriller Novels (Dead On My Feet, Dying Breath, Everybody Dies) (J.A. Konrath Thriller Collections) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 142 ratings

THREE FULL LENGTH THRILLERS. THREE AWESOME READS.

This is a box set of three novels featuring Phineas Troutt from the Jack Daniels series.

D E A D O N M Y F E E T

His name is Phineas Troutt. He's a problem solver.

If a woman is being stalked by her ex-husband, Phin can convince him to stop. If a union is being squeezed, Phin can squeeze the squeezer. He's not a mercenary. He's not a bodyguard. He's not a private eye. He's a guy who takes cash for solving problems with violence.

When a doctor at a suburban women's health clinic is being harassed, she hires Phin to make it stop. But the situation proves to be larger, and more dangerous, than even he can handle on his own. So he calls in some friends to help out; a P.I. named Harry McGlade and a female cop named Jack Daniels...

DEAD ON MY FEET by JA Konrath
He's dying to kill you...

D Y I N G B R E A T H

His name is Phineas Troutt. He's a problem solver.
Her name is Jack Daniels. She's a homicide cop.
And then there's Harry McGlade, private eye.

Phin is trying to find a lost girl.
Jack is on the trail of a serial killer.
Harry is looking for a runaway.
Little do they know, they're all on the same case...

They call themselves The Club. A group of rich, privileged twenty-somethings who like to indulge in things that money can't buy. Things like kidnapping, torture, and murder.

They think they can get away with it.

They're wrong.

DYING BREATH by J.A. Konrath
United we stand, united we fall...

E V E R Y B O D Y D I E S

They call him The Man With Seven Tears.

He has a teardrop tattoo on his cheek for every man he's murdered for his twisted cause. He's the head of the most ruthless hate group in the USA, and he's about to commit the biggest act of domestic terrorism in history.

There's only one person alive who knows him well enough to stop him. Someone strong enough. Determined enough. Smart enough.

Someone willing to lose everything.

His younger brother; a problem solver named Phineas Troutt.

Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.

He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.

Loved all the books in this trilogy!

This is a three book omnibus so I will be giving a back story and thoughts for each book.

First book: Dead on my Feet:

Phineas Troutt has a certain kind of business that he just "takes out the trash" for people that need his services. He doesn't consider himself any type of private eye or investigator - he is the type of person that likes to get his hands dirty where others do not.

A woman doctor named Pasha comes to see Phineas as she is being threatened by people that want to destroy her abortion clinic and they have already threatened her with death threats to the point that she is scared that they might make good on their promises.

Phineas decides to help her out as he needs the money as he is down on his luck and he will do whatever it takes to make sure that the goons that are after Pasha will not bother her any longer.

Phineas decides to pull in his friends, Harry McGlade who is a private eye and Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels a homicide cop to help him with finding out about the bad guys that are after Pasha and hopefully he can waylay the goons before they make good on their threats!

    Thoughts:

This was a great first book in this trilogy as I had already read about Phineas Troutt from the Jack Daniels series written by this author so I was looking forward to this trilogy. This book was a slow start as there was some world building along with character introduction of Pasha, but once it started moving along the pace picked up.

The pace actually went into full throttle when PI Harry McGlade showed up on the scene to help out and then Jack Daniels appeared which really sent this story into overdrive. The humorous quips are weaved within this trilogy mostly from Harry and I think this book had more quips than the books I have been reading of Jack Daniels. I literally was laughing from the quips and I really enjoyed the storyline of how Phineas was able to help out his client.

    Second book: Dying Breath:

Phineas is hired to find a missing girl, but doesn't realize that the missing girl is also tied into two separate cases that his friends, PI Harry McGlade and Lt. Jack Daniels are also investigating. As Phineas tries to track down the girl he runs into all kind of resistance as someone doesn't want him to find out where the girl is or if anything has happened to her.

When Phineas reaches out to his friends they end up helping him but neither one of them realizes that the girl is tied to their cases as well, until finally all the puzzle pieces come together and all three of them find out they are after the same girl plus the same bad guys as well are tied into all three cases.

    Thoughts:

This was a long second book and it seemed to drag out quite a bit with each character of Phineas, Harry, and Jack trying to figure out what was going on. Every chapter is for a different main character (Phineas, Harry, and Jack) which made it more interesting as I was able to experience what each one of the characters had to go through to solve the case.

There is tons of mystery wrapped within this story and I was trying to figure out how it was all going to connect in the end. More humorous quips throughout book two which helped to alleviate some of the tension of the storyline.

    Third book: Everybody Dies:

Phineas Troutt's brother Hugo is out of prison and has made a name for himself with the wrong type of people. He is with a gang that in order for him to move up in their order he has to kill certain people to achieve a higher rank within the gang and to do that he will need to kill his brother, Phineas.

Hugo ends up kidnapping Phineas' girlfriend for leverage to make Phineas meet up with him, but what Hugo doesn't know is that Phineas will do whatever it takes to rescue his girlfriend and to show Hugo that he will not back down without a fight.

    Thoughts:

This book was more fast paced and kept me moving at a quick speed to see what was going to happen next. The characters Jack and Harry were in this book more toward the last half of the book when things started becoming difficult for Phineas to get things done so he calls in his friends to help him out.

The story flows along quickly with the character Hugo and his murderous exploits within the storyline. This last book had a little bit more action within the pages as everything was coming to a head for all the characters involved which kept me on the edge of my seat. I barreled through this last book quick as there were plenty of twists and turns as the action escalated within the story.

There were not as many humorous quips within this volume as the focus was more on suspense and tension between Phineas and his brother, Hugo. I am going to rate this trilogy as a whole instead of each individual book. Giving this trilogy five "Thriller Killers" stars.

As the title says, I'm not a fan of prequels. To me it takes a lot of the suspense out of the story when I know who is going to survive. But I really like Phin, Harry, and Jack, so decided to give this series a try while I wait for the next Jack Daniels book to be released. I'm glad I read it. It was entertaining and even if Harry can be annoying, I still enjoyed him along with Phin and Jack. Now I really want a pony....

I can see why the publishers didn't like them. The first 2 at least had some sort of storyline, even if they were completely overwhelmed by the ridicalus main characters and annoying writing style. The last one, not even sure what to say about that one.

Very disappointing read, didn't bother to finish the first story because I hated the storyline and the obvious direction it was going in. But I like this author and his characters so I moved on to the 2nd story with high hopes. As you can see by the 2 star review my hopes were dashed.
Will stick with the Jack Daniels books from now on.
