The Caging at Deadwater Manor: An Intense Insane Asylum Psychological Horror Kindle Edition
Multi-award-winning author Sandie Will takes readers on a suspense-filled journey of a young woman trapped inside an insane asylum that is reminiscent of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on speed. If you enjoyed the gripping suspense of Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations, you'll be sure to love this thrilling book.
This story is fiction; however, the inspiration for the story was based on the human cages Sandie's father found hidden away in the attic of the mental institution where he worked.

"The pacing is excellent and well-wrought, drawing the reader along to share in Jeannie's terror, frustration, and helplessness, as well as her hope and resolve to escape."
"This book sucker punches you in the gut, as you can only witness as 18-year-old Jeannie is held captive in an insane asylum. Every word of every horror she is put through will stay with you. And the ending, oh the ending... That's all I can say about that. Be prepared to be glued to the page."

SANDIE WILL, Multi-Award-Winning Author of Psychological Thrillers
"The inspiration for the story came from my beloved father who worked in various psychiatric hospitals during short periods of his career. In the attic of one such hospital, he made a disturbing discovery --- one that bothered me so much, I had to create a story around it. Though fiction, many parts of the book intertwine the patient routines, treatments and outbursts that I learned from my father and other research in a way that makes the story vivid through Jeannie's perspective."
Sandie Will is a multi-award-winning, psychological thriller novelist who lives in Tampa Bay, Florida, and works as a geologist by day. She has been married to her husband, Charlie, for over 30 years and they have two sons. Her favorite place to write is in her back room "treehouse" in the arms of an old oak.

Editorial Reviews
Review
During a hospital visit, a young woman is detained and incarcerated against her will in the thrilling suspense novel, The Caging at Deadwater Manor by Sandie Will. Jeanie's mother died when she was fourteen, leaving her and her brother to be raised by their father. Incongruously, her once loving father now hates Jeanie, but yet, still loves her brother. Her father never misses a chance to verbally chastise Jeanie and spew his venomous distaste for her. Unable to do anything about her circumstances at present, Jeanie has plans to escape her abusive situation on her eighteenth birthday. Fortuitously, the day of her birthday arrives, and her father surprises her with a car. Now Jeanie has a better mode of transportation that will expedite the plans she has prepared for that very night. However, her father has one request of Jeanie; she needs to visit her emotionally ailing aunt at the local psychiatric hospital. Because she loves her aunt, Jeanie complies and puts a hold on her plans until the following morning. Unfortunately, this is a big mistake. When Jeanie enters the hospital, she is abducted and drugged. When she wakes, Jeanie finds herself imprisoned in a cage in an attic; adjacent to her is another cage occupied by a girl. Horrified and frightened, Jeanie realizes the neighboring young female occupant is dead. What is going on? Why is this happening to her? Will she be able to get out of there alive?
Based on real events, The Caging at Deadwater Manor by Sandie Will is an exhilarating young adult suspense novel reminiscent of the Gothic horror story, Flowers In The Attic by V.C. Andrews. In the first chapter, the reader is captured by Jeanie's fortitude despite her circumstances, and is able to connect and empathize with her character. From there the story takes off, surprising the reader with unexpectedly appalling and terrifying incidents. From the alarming hospital scene onward, the horror and suspense continue to build to a chilling and shocking climax. For those who love a shiver inducing story, this is a fabulous suspense novel that makes the hardiest reader's blood run cold. However, due to some of the more adult situations, I recommend it to readers over the age of sixteen. -Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers' Favorite

About the author

Sandie Will is a multi-award-winning author of psychological thrillers/horror. She loves tapping into our fears to scare us all and make us cringe.
She lives in the Tampa Bay Area, and works as a geologist by day and a writer at night. Her down times are spent with her husband of over 30 years, family, and pets.
Road trips with Sandie should be avoided as she’s been known to demand endless stops at road cuts to satisfy her geology cravings and teach her companions everything they never wanted to know about the Earth.
Sandie especially loves finding little bookstores and antique shops, tasting new wines and coffees, learning histories and cultures, exploring the Appalachians and Rockies, and writing in her back room nestled in the arms of an old oak.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2017This is a polished independent novel that skillfully blends coming-of-age, mystery, and suspense genre elements. The pacing is excellent and well-wrought, drawing the reader along to share in Jean's terror, frustration, and helplessness, as well as her hope and resolve to escape.
The more mature and disturbing content -- the dehumanizing trials suffered by the protagonist during her institutionalization at a legally suspect facility at the hands of vindictive family and sadistic staff -- is handled organically and, to the extent possible, tastefully, reflecting the lived experiences of the protagonist without resorting to gratuitousness. (Nevertheless, I'd recommend against audiences below 16 years of age.) Similarly, I also found the protagonist's reactions to be realistic most of the time despite the outrageous circumstances in which she finds herself.
Furthermore, the reader must interpret whether the narrator is reliable or not, adding another layer to the novel; en route, we question, alongside the protagonist, if we are accurately perceiving the reality of the situation as the story unfolds. As a bonus, although the setting of Tampa is somewhat secondary to the tale, the author clearly knows the area well and that familiarity adds a nice sense of place.
I only had three minor complaints. The novel is set in the present, which did strike me as somewhat odd, as I at first assumed, given the subject matter, that I would be reading a 20th century historical fiction; admittedly, while this sort of occurrence is hopefully more rare today (and sterilization, once not uncommon by force, is now virtually impossible to obtain for a nulliparous woman under age 40 for any reason whatsoever, consent or not), it would be naive to say it's unthinkable. Second, of the two main antagonists at the facility, the orderly is well characterized as a classic abusive partner with the usual complexities; the nurse, on the other hand, simply seems psychopathic; of course, psychopaths exist and would self-select for employment at shady facilities like Deadwater, but I found myself wanting more from her -- some motivation, a story: something besides unexplained hatred. Third, the ending wasn't entirely as satisfying as the meat of the novel, as the story quickly winds down in a few pages what is built in a hundred. (As an aside, it sent shivers down my spine to imagine that many went through what the protagonist did, and many of them spent the rest of their lives that way.)
In closing, I bought this book last night and stayed up all night to finish reading it -- I was anxious to learn the truth and the outcome. That alone makes it worth 5 stars.
Ms. Will shows talent with plotting, pacing, and character development, and after "Deadwater," I am certainly looking forward to her future releases. In the meantime, I recommend reading "Deadwater" as a thoroughly entertaining excursion.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2018An intense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, rooting for the protagonist to make it safely through to the end, and what an ending!! I didn’t see that coming!
Jeannie’s dad hates her and after years of mentally abusing her, contrives with the staff at Deadwater Manor, psychiatric hospital, to have her locked away.
What she suffers at their hands is harrowing, and almost breaks her, but she doesn’t give up hope, and with the help of another ‘patient’ they plan their escape.
This debut novel from Sandie Will is well written and engaging. It draws the reader in to share in Jeannie’s terror and frustration.
Knowing that this is a fictional story doesn’t stop the feeling that this has possibly happened, or could happen, to someone, somewhere!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2024Unique, well-written, and suspenseful.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2017It started out good but got rather gory but still keep be wanting to know what happens next! The end was pretty bazaar and not at all what I expected! I usually get free books but paid for this one! It does usually take me awhile to get thru a book but this one I read in 2 days!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2017Inspired by true events, "The Caging at Deadwater Manor" made me cringe and stuck in my brain like a demented 90's pop song. Following Jeannie, who has already been through a crap life with a dead mother and verbally abusive father, as she is tricked into admission into the infamous Deadwater Manor, this eerie read will haunt you. Frantically searching for a soul she can trust in the hell of Deadwater, Sandie sets her mind to escaping the horrific "treatments" and constant sexual threats surrounding her.
The ending... it hit me particularly hard. I can't say more than that, but wow. I did not see that coming. Can we talk about making this into a Netflix series?
Because of the sensitive content, this book is mature YA and up. I liken it to Ellen Hopkins level content.
Through her powerful writing, Sandie Will reminds us all that the most feared monsters live inside of humankind.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2019I honestly expected more after reading the description and seeing the high reviews. Nothing special about the book except a good story to follow which is y it’s getting **. I’m even upset that I ended up reading the whole thing and really felt it was a waste of my time. But you know the saying, “Don’t start what you can’t finish”! Some highly inaccurate believability in some instances as well. I don’t even know if psychiatric hospitals exist today, but I’m assuming there probably are a few out there.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2019I'm an avid reader of "dark" mysteries. I finish one book and start looking for the next. My son thought I would enjoy this book and gave it to me as a gift. I was caught up in the story; especially knowing this was written based on the author's father's work in psychiatric hospitals. Although fictional, the knowledge that this could actually occur gives this book that extra chill up your spine. I agree that this book is for mature young adults because of Jeannie's experiences. However these experiences are what add to the intrigue for adult readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2017This story grabs you right from the start. Knowing that it was based on true events made my stomach actually hurt while reading it. It has that "Oh my GOD this is horrible but I can't look away" feeling to it. With an appalling yet plausible story line (everything weird happens in Florida), sick plot twists, and the corruption of a young unsuspecting girl by a warped parent, it reads like an updated V.C. Andrews novel on steroids.
A very intense Mature Young Adult read with profanity, torture, and sexual scenes approach with caution.
