- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a well written science fiction story that, while set in two distant worlds, feels very immediate from the start. The main character is sympathetically drawn, with his back story slowly revealed as the book progresses. Only one other character is as carefully portrayed, but that's certainly enough.
The plot is cleverly constructed, linking two worlds together via mind travel. The issues about society, the individual's role in society, violence and loneliness all resonate today. Although I only pick up science fiction occasionally, I found myself very engaged and driven to keep reading -- and I found the ending to be satisfying and in keeping with the spirit of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new star in the SF universe?
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA science fiction author is always faced with the task of creating a complete world with all its rules, laws of nature and social components. I always find it very exciting to see how this succeeds. - Here it works very well. I was in the plot from the first sentence.
The reader witnesses how a former interstellar power tries to restore its former greatness by other means. A topic that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of sad topicality in 2022...
The former military power of the Ansurians can't leave their system after a huge catastrophe and can't travel into the universe anymore. Instead of attacking their neighbors with the superiority of brute force as in the past, they have now found a way to enter the consciousness of other species in order to travel through the universe.
In doing so, those "visited" in this way are not aware of the presence of their "guests".
But instead of learning from these observations in the "Rodenberryian" sense of other civilizations, dark forces in the Ansurian Empire want to use the opportunity to destabilize them for the glory of Ansurian and to plunge them into chaos. - A leopard can’t change its spots.
When Arax, a young traveler, uncovers this conspiracy, he tries to stand against it....
The whole thing happens quietly, without pompous battle turmoil. It is an adventure that, naturally, takes place more in the mind. Nevertheless, the plot takes on tangible features, and the author manages to build up tension effortlessly, so that you find yourself crossing the fingers for the hero. It's not easy to put this novel down. - It's a real page-turner.
The characters are well drawn. They go through a development so that one can identify with them. This makes it easy for the reader to stay tuned and read through the 224 pages in one go.
Anyone who enjoys Becky Chambers' books should definitely give this one a look. It's worth it.
There may be a new favorite author getting ready here....
