Tom Mankowski is a medical examiner with the police who investigates a suspicious death. John Smith was discovered dead from sleep deprivation after being experimented with a new drug called N-SOM which prevents people from sleeping, but has major side effects. Tom is helped by Dr. Emily Black to find out what happened to John Smith. Richard Van Pelt is a wealthy business man who funds the experimental drug project. Tom requests the help of Fabler an ex-military operative and Dr. Frank Belgium a molecular biologist to help him prevent the experimental drug from being distributed before more people are found dead. I really enjoyed this amazing dark suspense thriller novel.

Disturb is a story that deals with corruption within the pharmaceutical industry and the effects of that corruption on people. The rush to bring a new life altering drug to the market is the central story and instead of looking for drugs that could actually help people, it is the life style drugs that are the most profitable. N Som is the drug that Disturb is centered around. A world that doesn't need sleep, a world where rest is found in a pill are the promises of N Som.

The increased productivity, the increased ability to work and to create are the prospects that are driving the development of this new drug. However, to quickly bring the drug to market, the company begins to take short cuts including faking and ignoring research results. The human subjects begin to suffer but this and other negative and bad research results are ignored, hidden and falsified. Greed has become the driving force for the development of this drug.

All in all, Disturb is an entertaining read. It is not the typical Konrath novel; the quirky humor is gone and while there is a fair amount of violence it doesn't seem excessive, however, the premise of this novel seems all too real.

Let's start off with the McGuffin. A drug that takes thirty minutes of sleep and makes it the equivalent of a full night's slumber.

Okay, so right off the bat my attention was definitely got!

I mean, it was got real hard!

You have to understand, I suffer from bad sleep apnea. I have got one of those breathing machines - and aside from making me look and sound a little like Darth Vader, I sleep just fine - but there were many years when I did NOT sleep well at all. I would wake up to dreams of me being underneath a frozen creek bed or a great stone that was weighing me down. My heart would go thumpedy-bump like a herd full of rabid jackrabbits and I would wake up gasping for breath.

So anything to do with not sleeping equals sleeping catches my attention.

The pages were fast-turners. I ran through the chapters like...well, like a herd full of rabid jackrabbits.

I am talking about Thumper City.

Did it scare me? Well, no, but it made my heart speed up in a good way. Konrath keeps the tension garotte-tight and I enjoyed the whole read.

So let me give this book a big thumbs up. It isn't Konrath's best work - but heck, even on a bad day he just plain delivers the goods.

Grab a copy today while it is free - before he wakes up and starts charging for this puppy.

    Yours in storytelling,

    Steve Vernon

I became aware of author J. A. Konrath through the many freebies that Amazon offers its Kindle readers. After downloading and reading Konrath's "Afraid", I realized I had to have more from this author. This book, "Disturb" was my second foray into the author's world and won't be the last. Konrath (aka Jack Kilborn) is an outstanding plotter and builder of suspense. This book has copious amounts of both.

In "Disturb", Konrath creates a Robin Cook-like medical thriller revolving around a drug, N-Som, that makes sleep unnecessary. Think of the possibilities... As the inventors and researchers responsible for the creation of the drug start the process with the FDA to get N-Som approved, strange things begin to happen to the people responsible for the drug. Konrath does a great job introducing a number of plot-relevant characters that are fairly fleshed out.

The book has plenty (and I mean PLENTY) of twists and turns as Konrath peels away the layers of suspense involved with the side effects that accompany the benefits of the drug. Most readers should find themselves flipping page after page as they attempt to figure which direction the next plot twist will take them. The book is almost cinematic in that respect and would make a nice film.

Though not as riveting as "Afraid", "Disturb" is able to stand on its own feet and delivers thrills page after page. Fans of Konrath/Kilborn will want to add this book to their "read" list.

...but then publishers are only human. If J.A.'s publisher had liked the humor of the Jack Daniels books (which I haven't read) then he would have been disappointed by any departure. I think J.A. Konrath made the correct choice and published them himself.

And you know, I've heard other authors mention the same problem. To this I say, "don't judge a book by it's publisher!" Okay I apologize for that one ;-)

This book had a very interesting premise: the promise of feeling rested without sleep. I'm not going to go into any more details because it would spoil the plot. But if you are drawn to serial killer mayhem\medical mystery type of books with lots of pressure and unexpected twists of plot then you will love this one!

It reads easily and you find yourself rooting for the heroes, hoping they beat the foes.

I like medical thrillers and enjoyed this book but the one thing that really put me off was the poor editing. Words were spelt wrongly and the text was all over the place. Not easy to read but the subject was good. This is the worst Kindle book I have read for the above reasons but I did finish it.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's crazy, but I like it!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2013
I've never read anything by this author before. This is yet another book I have decided to try whilst it was offered as a freebie. What a crazy book this is! I enjoyed it very much. The story is pretty off the wall, centered around the development of a new drug (N-Som) which when taken means the user no longer needs to sleep. Of course being a thriller there are side effects discovered which are not good, and the drug is also produced in a manner that is definitely not what most people would call ethical. It's not particularly believeable but suspending your disbelief can certainly be a good thing which leads to a fun and suspensful story which is full of ups and downs as the body count piles up!

I did sort of see the twist coming but this did not take away from the story at all and I was only partly right so there were still plenty of surprises!

At the end of the book there was a note from the author giving a little history about his writing career and a bonus short story that was every bit as weird as the main novel.

If you like crime, fast paced thrillers, stories set in the medical world and general weirdness, this book is for you.

Pleased to see he has written many more books I shall give some a try in the future.

I took a long time to get into this book and when I read the reviews everyone mentioned a twist towards the end. When I was 60% into the book it started getting really good and I thought I'd guessed the twist but I didn't it came right at the end during the excellent finale. This book had been in my wish list for months but I finally got it when it was listed as a free book so it was an enjoyable bargain.
