How to be a DIVA at Public Speaking is an engaging book that covers the many facets of your presentation: from writing your speech, to slides, to what to wear, to how you move on stage, to analyzing how it went afterwards, and so much more.

The way Shola Kaye draws parallels to famous singers and gives real world examples how they move and work audiences, really illustrates her principles in a easy to grasp manner. It makes sense. The author offers so many helpful tips and action steps. My favorite tip was to use post it notes before setting up slides in your preferred software program. Chapter 6 for me was packed with value. The part about when to do your closing when including a Q and A session was gold. I liked her inclusion of "the dip", too! It works every time.

There were some very helpful recommendations on how to get speaking engagements (since they don't grow on trees), the specific questions to ask the booker/promoter that will help you tailor your speech to the audience, and so much more in this book.

Don't miss this book if you are interested in public speaking or have to give any type of presentations (even if it is a small meeting at work).

How many of us have sung our hearts out in front of the mirror with a hair brush in hand listening to the crowds explode in applause as you gave the performance of your life? As a singer for over 30 years, I LOVED how Shola paralleled singing with public speaking. She teaches how to channel your inner pop DIVA to get your message across in exciting ways. She illustrates her points with creative analogies to show how fun getting in front of an audience and speaking to them can be. She gives you step-by-step instructions on what to do before, during and after your presentation. You will discover your DIVA style and embrace it to your best ability.

This book was a joy to read. The author weaved in many great stories that helped keep my attention the entire time (which is hard to do). I guarantee, after reading it, you will be able to take your presentation from dull to show-stopping. Your audience is waiting. Break a leg!

Author Shola Kaye's point is not that you need to have a great voice, write brilliant speeches, have a commanding presence, or be a great orator to be a complete speaker. Her point is that you can take the stage and work the audience and have fun doing it, if you'll take your cues from the Divas. That's right - Beyonce, Taylor, Gaga... they all have "it", and they command stages and deliver their "message" with aplomb! So why not learn from them? Right?

So we learn the DIVA system of stage presenting - Dynamic, Inspiring, Valuable and Authentic.

And from there it's a wonderful blending of the way a DIVA works the stage and the audience combined with the amount of hard-core tips and methods of planning, writing, moving, vocalizing, overall organization, and even dealing with nerves.

So if you want to, or NEED to, take a stage - perhaps learning to be a DIVA will allow you to do with ease and style!

If they fidget, check their watches, or pull out their phones and start texting when you get up to speak, this is the book that will not only help you identify what the problem is, but solve it. Even if you never give a speech, never talk in work meetings, never have to influence clients, this book is still a worthwhile read for the good advice it gives in being a more effective communicator. I think almost anyone would benefit by reading it.
This author makes what is often a fairly dull topic sparky and enjoyable. She just sounds like someone you'd love to have a long lunch with - and you get the next best thing, reading this book - time with an interesting writer with a great story to tell, offering plenty of practical and actionable information. Though Shona Kaye is writing to an audience of public speakers, this book is also helpful for writers. If you want engaged listeners (or readers), you need to buy this book.

Who hasn't been afraid of public speaking & wished they could find an easy way to get better at this necessary skill? I wish I had this book years ago! The author takes you through a very doable process in her book and then gives you the bonus of a free video course. You just can't go wrong with that -- great for visual learners. I really do appreciate how the author tackles a fairly complex subject and breaks it up into easy-to-understand and easy-to-apply parts. Personally, I think she has done a much better job with this than some of those so-called gurus and experts. She's been there struggling with public speaking but persevered, learned, improved, and came out on top.

The author does the impossible -- making learning how to be a better speaker FUN and EASY. Get this book, learn a golden skill, and have fun while learning!

This book is top when you are a speaker or wanting to become one. It is really fun and easy to read. The writer includes her own journey of discovering her voice, which gives it a sparkling touch. The book helps you with everything that you need, including how to craft a wonderful speech, overcoming the fears you might have, how to make anyone feel welcome, body language and many, many things more. It is a complete guide to engage your audience, including the preparation of it. But this isn't all, it also comes with a great bonus, a link to a series of video's. In this series you will also find exercises that prepare your voice for speaking, so you will get a more authentic voice. So if you want to become really good at public speaking read this book!

Reviewed in France on February 26, 2017
I have read a lot of books on the topic of public speaking and have always found most of them too theoretical and/or technical.
What I particularly like with Shola Kaye's book is that it is written in a very relatable manner and .... that it is written for women (even if, as she says herself, men can follow her method too)! I love the parallel she makes with celebrities.
But don't get me wrong, it's not because her style is very relatable that it isn't practical. She breaks down the steps of her DIVA method while also giving us access to resources and last but not least she helps us put together our speech (referring back to her method when needed) and where to find speaking gigs depending on where you're at in your speaking journey.
That book is going to be my Go To resource as I move along in the speaking world!

I really enjoyed the supportive and conversational style of How to be a Diva at Public Speaking. Even with nearly 30 years of delivering presentations I learnt so much and it gave me inspiring ideas as to what I should do more, and less. I particularly liked the importance of telling stories and sharing your own experiences. It was also valuable to consider that an introduction about yourself is not egocentric but helps build credibility. It is definitely worth accessing the free workbook and videos as they offer a useful summary and new exercises. Thank you Shola for sharing your wisdom.

Likening public speaking to singing is pure genius. Very simple but true.

I've always been a bit nervous about public speaking but after reading this book I feel more focused on giving my 'fans' a great performance rather than on my nerves.

Excellent book. Well written, easy to understand and delivered in a humorous way. Practical steps to improve delivery. Whether you are a newbie of slightly more experienced public speaker this book provides solid insight into the components needed to deliver a memorable speech.

I am definitely the D and V in DIVA. Haven't a clue what I'm talking about? Read the book :)

A great book. I've seen Shola Kaye speak and can evidence that she puts her tips into action - in fact it's what made me buy the book. But reading it offered more than I could have imagined - the DIVA system and analogy is brilliant, drawing on her experience as a singer offers useful parallels and it is packed full of actionable tips. I thought I was good at public speaking before but after putting these tips to work, it has TRANSFORMED my approach. Amazing!
