The Fifth Floor Kindle Edition
It’s a good thing Jeremy doesn’t believe in ghosts. Everything he sees and hears must have some kind of explanation, right?
That he had to patrol the fifth floor was bad enough, but never in his wildest dreams did Jeremy think he would end up in the basement. Now all he wants is out…only the hospital, and its inhabitants, have other plans.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2019I like it. It was super short and I wish it was a bit longer but it was okay! Nice little spooky tale.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2019In his mind, Jeremy Brogan thought he'd landed the perfect job. All he had to do was man the front desk and patrol the halls whenever possible. That's easier said than done. Most especially when his mind starts playing tricks on him. Despite the fact that all is not what it seems, he's determined in fulfilling every aspect of his job to the best of his ability. Even if the spirits walking through the hospitals walls say otherwise.
A short, yet engrossing read, E. H. gives us a story where nothing is as it seems. Jeremy wants nothing more than to do his job. The spirits, however, have something else planned for him. A series of twists and turns leads the stories to an unexpected end, one that leaves you mind-boggled by the second.
I would have loved to know about Jeremy, though. How did he come to find himself as a night watchmen? What about his parents? Does he have any siblings? Overall, the story is fulfilling.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2017A wonderful short story specifically tailored to target the horror genre and many readers that enjoy creepiness, goosebumps and a general scare the hell out of the reader feels. The "Feel" of dream or not dreaming was told exceptionally well. I wasn't sure if the main character was dead or alive. Maybe he died when he showed up to the job. This was his first night after all. The Fifth Floor is a story of horror make no mistake. This had me regretting the time of night chosen to read it.. Being a person admitted to a hospital on a frequent basis and used to morphine drips I couldn't help be reminded of my own dream sequences while reading this descriptive, imaginative and unsettling(good) sense of horror. My hat is off to the writer and I want more. Short stories like this example are how horror can start off fast and snowball into unadulterated terror.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2017I love this kind of books. This author is awesome. Who has time to see a horror/thriller story?
This book is perfect when you want to read something ghostly and not spend hours or even days to them. The book reminded me of urban legends we heard when we are kids... or have a haunted place in your town and everyone has been talking about it!
This book took me down to memory lane with those kinds of stories and the way it's written it's like you are there experiencing it yourself a double bonus, my friends. I wouldn't hesitate to tell you to go ahead and read this short story you won't regret it!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2017pretty good quick read with a twist at the end
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2017Canadian author E.H. James is a prolific writer of short stories – stories that test the imagination and call forth ghost like thoughts of the dark world about which we know very little. James is part of that conundrum as there is no biographical information on this gifted author as though that is meant to be part of the mysteries presented. We learn that she has read and researched in the areas of parapsychology and metaphysics, for the past 40 years, and has woven the real and imaginary together into stories of the strange and bizarre. The fruits of her labor show!
A hospital, haunted of course, and a new night watchman bring us into these halls of terror. ‘He drew back the first sheet. Lying on the gurney was a girl of about sixteen, tracks running up each of her arms. “Dear God.” Goosebumps rose on his arms, and he carefully placed the sheet back over her head. He lifted the next covering. This gurney held a man. His body had been horribly mangled, his features now indistinguishable. “Oh, God!” Jeremy let the sheet drop, as he turned away. Closing his eyes, he gathered himself.’
Short but cogent, THE FIFTH FLOOR has many surprises. The plot outline hints a bit of the fright – ‘Jeremy Brogan thought being a night watchman at a hospital would be easy, wandering long, dark, empty halls late at night. It might even get kind of boring, after a while…Except Jeremy is working at St. Michael’s; the most haunted hospital in the country. It’s a good thing Jeremy doesn’t believe in ghosts. Everything he sees and hears must have some kind of explanation, right? That he had to patrol the fifth floor was bad enough, but never in his wildest dreams did Jeremy think he would end up in the basement. Now all he wants is out…only the hospital, and its inhabitants, have other plans.’
And for the shock to work, read it yourself. Only eighteen pages but that is plenty of time for the goose bumps to rise. James knows this territory well. Grady Harp, November 17

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2017What a delightfully creepy story! Your mind can play many tricks but is it really a trick or are you going mad? From beginning to end, this story kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat. You didn’t know what was to come and it was awesome. I give this 5 stars.
