DRACULAS - A Novel of Terror Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 967 ratings

A DYING MAN’S GREATEST TREASURE…

Mortimer Moorecook, retired Wall Street raider, avid collector, is losing his fight against cancer. With weeks to live, a package arrives at the door of his hillside mansion—an artifact he paid millions for…a hominoid skull with elongated teeth, discovered in a farmer’s field in the Romanian countryside. With Shanna, his beautiful research assistant looking on, he sinks the skull’s razor sharp fangs into his neck, and immediately goes into convulsions.

OPENS THE DOOR TO AN ANCIENT EVIL...

A rural hospital. A slow night in the ER. Until Moorecook arrives strapped to a gurney, where he promptly codes and dies.

WHERE DEATH IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

Four well-known horror authors pool their penchants for scares and thrills, and tackle one of the greatest of all legends, with each writer creating a unique character and following them through a vampire outbreak in a secluded hospital.

The goal was simple: write the most intense novel they possibly could.

Which they did.

A Word of Warning:

Within these pages, you will find no black capes, no satin-lined coffins, no brooding heartthrobs who want to talk about your feelings. Forget sunlight and stakes. Throw out your garlic and your crosses. This is the Anti-TWILIGHT.

NOTE: DRACULAS is a full length novel, 80,000 words long. But this ebook is also brimming with an additional 80,000 words of extras and bonuses:

- a clickable table of contents
- a round-robin interview with Strand, Wilson, Crouch, and Kilborn about writing DRACULAS
- deleted scenes
- two alternate endings

    Rating: 4.7 out of 5

A few weeks ago I suffered a serious case of fantasy over-exposure. After opening the next novel on my list, I found myself dreading yet another exploration into world-building and magical powers. So, to relieve my readerly doldrums, I put it down and picked up another book, one that's been hiding in my Kindle since I bought it the day it came out. That book...Draculas, by the combo of Jack Kilborn (aka J.A. Konrath), Blake Crouch, Jeff Strand, and F. Paul Wilson.

I'm glad I saved it, for it was the cure for what ailed me.

Draculas is a wham-bang, smack-em-around, eviscerate-the-enemy, action-packed adventure. It takes place in the boondocks town of Durango, Colorado, where the staple eccentric old rich guy, Mortimer Moorecock, has been delivered a very special package - the skull of an unknown, ancient being; a slice of archeology (complete with a mouthful of dagger teeth) that could possibly, if it proves real, be the missing link between the myth and reality of vampires.

Due to a self-imposed wound involving said artifact, Mortimer is rushed to the hospital. It is there, in Blessed Crucifixion, that the rest of the story unfolds. Regular, everyday people undergo startling changes, becoming blood-driven maniacs, their physical forms changing in virtually a blink of an eye. Bedlam ensues, as those poor survivors are forced to fend for themselves in this incongruously-named, backwoods medical center while murdering, scissor-mouthed freaks - the draculas from the title, though they're nothing like traditional vampires except for the bloodlust - run amok.

Taken at face value, the rest of the book is standard hack-and-slash fare. The text is filled with gore, with people tossed into unbelievable circumstances and responding in some pretty outlandish ways. The body count becomes too high to count by the time the fifth chapter rolls around. In a way, the violence on the page is almost mind-numbing. And I mean this in a good way. A very good way.

The thing is, Draculas is the furthest thing from a serious book. Is it horror? Yes. But more than anything else, this is satire to the extreme. (The authors tell you this right from the dedication: For Bram Stoker, with deepest apologies, it reads.) Every character is a cliché - the skeptical researcher; the lawman obsessed with ultra-powerful weapons; the egotistical small-town doctor; the brave nurse who's been shortchanged; the idiot lumberjack with a heart of gold; the clown with depression issues; the spoiled little girl. However, these clichés are exaggerated to the point of absurdity, which demonstrates a group of authors that 1) don't take themselves too seriously, and 2) are just having fun with the typical horror tropes - making the characters special by amplifying personality traits, in effect flipping truism on its head. In fact, if this book has any fault at all, it's that there are a couple characters that aren't absurd enough. The scenes involving these particulars are the only ones that seem a bit slower than the others - as contradictory as it is to say, in the scope of the story involved they become less real.

But these scenes are few. For the most part, we have page after page of action, of wisecracking dialogue and dismemberment gone awry. And, oddly enough, there's some actual emotion here, as well. Toward the latter stages of the novel, when the poop really starts hitting the fan, there are a couple extremely well-written and affecting scenes. It was strange to find, especially in a work of fiction this ridiculous and over-the-top, but it was most certainly appreciated. It takes a ton of talent to do this, talent these four writers obviously possess.

The writing is very smooth and virtually seamless, to the point that the only way you'd know this was written by more than a single author is by reading the multiple names in the title. Though I'm sure each of them have a style all their own (this is the first work I've read by any of them), here they've managed to meld their different approaches to the craft into a cohesive whole. Again, that takes talent.

Draculas is an exceedingly fun read. It might not be for everyone, what with the amount of blood spilled within its pages, but for those who want to laugh, cringe, and even feel their heart skip a beat more than once, this is the book for you. It's a grindhouse adventure that doesn't take its foot off the pedal until the end, which in itself is hilarious in its irony and rewriting of myth. But more than anything it's a good time, no matter how irreverent to the source material the authors may be - in an affectionate way, of course.

I had a blast reading it. You will, too.

Back on October 19th, 2010, I spotlighted the release of Draculas written by J.A. Conrath, Blake Crouch, Jeff Strand, and F. Paul Wilson on my blog (LL Book Review). The concept was the four of them would write a "real" vampire story together, and they wanted to release it in time for Halloween last year. Since no traditional publisher would ever be able to get a book out in a month, the foursome published it on Kindle.

To get the word out, they put their fan base and mailing lists together, sending out advanced ecopies in exchange for reviews posted to Amazon on the day of the release. And it worked! The book spiked to #1 on the Horror Kindle Bestsellers the day of its release, and garnered over 100 reviews the first day. On November 6th, a paperback edition of the book was released through CreateSpace.

I downloaded it myself a few weeks ago, having not read a good gory story in ages. And gory it is! It begins with a headline about an odd skull that's been dug up by a farmer in Transylvania. The skull is human but has razor-like fangs protruding from its mouth. Mortimer Moorecook, a wealthy retired American businessman, purchases the skull for a hefty sum and upon its arrival, he sinks the skull's teeth into his neck.

He's rushed to the hospital and just as he enters the ER, those razor sharp teeth begin to burst through his jaws and mouth and long talons jut out of his fingers. All hell breaks loose as the blood thirsty zombie-like vampire Moorecook attacks the hospital staff and other patients in the ER, causing them to quickly change as well. Soon, an army of "draculas" is surging through the hospital hungrily in search of blood.

Just as the WORD OF WARNING suggests in the description: Within these pages, you will find no black capes, no satin-lined coffins, no brooding heartthrobs who want to talk about your feelings. Forget sunlight and stakes. Throw out your garlic and your crosses. This is the Anti-TWILIGHT.

But the story is not without its classic homage to other horror classics we know and love, and that scare us half to death. One of the draculas is Benny the Clown, a birthday performer in the ER because the birthday girl's braces are stuck in the flesh of his hand. A horror in and of itself, but image a vampire clown! His squeaky shoes coming down the hospital hallway will send chills up your spine. Oh, and the little girl with the braces? She gets changed into a little demon vampire too, in search of "red candy."

Our heroes and heroins are quickly introduced by way of three couples. We have Moorecook's caretaker Nurse Jenny and her ex-husband Randall, a chainsaw wielding lumberjack whose also a patient in the hospital because of a self inflicted chainsaw wound. Picture a big lumberjack chasing vampires through a hospital in his open hospital gown - with his chainsaw - and you've got chapters of laugh out loud scenes, like this quote from Randall when he and Jenny set out to save the children in the pediatrics ward:

"Of course it's for you. But it's also so those little diseased children don't become dracula snacks. We need to get them safe so they can be sick and die in peace."

Then there's Shanna, Moorecook's assistant, and her gun obsessed cop boyfriend named Clay. Clay fights back with a duffel bag full of souped up guns, including one special gun he calls Alice. Lastly, there's a minister and his wife, whose pregnant and about to give birth to their first child.

Much of the story is scene after scene of Jenny and Randall trying to save the children, the minister trying to save is wife and child, and Clay trying to save Shanna, all while having to defend themselves from the growing herd of blood thirsty monsters. If you don't like blood and gore, then do NOT read this book. It's full of it. But you have to appreciate the over-the-top scenes that will have you either smiling, raising your eyebrows and shaking your haed, or flipping the pages to find out what the four authors did next. It's definitely a fun read that wasn't meant to be taken too seriously. Heck, even the dedication was to Bram Stoker with apologies.

The Kindle Edition is only 47%, so it's a quick read. The rest of the book contains sneak peeks at the authors other upcoming work and samples. There's also a collection of "behind the scenes" emails between the authors which gives an awesome look into how they collaborated and wrote this together. So, it's half book and half "making of" material. Just like the extras you find on a DVD, this electronic version has the same type of pluses.

Kudos to these guys for jumping on the self-publishing wagon and taking it to a new level! A Draculas 2 is coming soon and I can't wait to see what's in store!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mindless Vampire Horror!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 8, 2018
I always get nervous when I see authors getting together to co-write a book, especially four! I always wonder if the styles and ideas of the authors are going to clash and turn it into a pure mess. But my fears were unfounded as soon as I got into this book.

It starts with a bang and goes on at breakneck speed in an orgy of violence and gore, with some pretty funny bits as well. Each author-Jack Kilborn, Blake Crouch, Jeff Strand and F Paul Wilson, create characters who are inside the secluded hospital when a vampire outbreak begins. There are no fluffy bunny moments or a break in the action, no waffle or endless descriptions, no classic literature or critically acclaimed writing...this is just vampire action on speed. And I loved it!

Mortimor is a rich man who is dying of cancer and has an extreme idea to cure it. He purchases a vampire skull with horrific fangs and stabs himself in the neck with it, infecting himself. His collapse is immediate and his nurse Jenny and assistant Shanna have to get him to the hospital where he swiftly dies. But Mortimor is going to come back very quickly and is very hungry and eager to infect as many people as he can. Chaos and death are about to reign in the hospital as the uninfected try to escape or hide and the vampire hordes hunt them down.

We follow Jenny and her ex husband Randall who is in hospital after an unfortunate chainsaw accident, the obnoxious Dr Lanz who had Jenny fired from the hospital, Shanna and her redneck cop boyfriend Clay, Adam in the labour ward with wife Stacie, Benny the Clown at the ER after being bitten by a child at a birthday party who is stuck to him by the braces on her teeth and Carla the nurse on the labour ward. There are also a lot of people at the hospital for various reasons who are about to become a walking and screaming buffet!

It is Lanz who manages to get a call in to the police to alert them while all hell is breaking out around him. Victims are growing fangs as their own fall out, the sign of infection, and a full scale bitefest is under way. Hospital staff are trying to close wards and protect the vulnerable patients as monsters stalk the dark corridors. Shanna comes back from a coffee to find Mortimor had died, reanimated and is chewing on people. Benny the Clown discovers that being chomped by a child is going to be the start of a really bad day. Jenny begins to see the now sober Randall in a new light as the injured man uses his chainsaw to protect her and a ward full of kids. Oasis is discovering that being a child vampire makes it kinda tough to get a decent meal. Adam's wife needs blood after the delivery but does he really want to venture down to the basement to get it?

As well as the gore, then is some seriously inappropriate humour which I really enjoyed. Without a doubt, my favourite character was Benny the Clown with his squeaky shoes. As he arrives on the children's ward where others are hiding...

"Benny the Clown had torn open the man's abdominal cavity, his claws cradling several loops of glistening intestines. But rather than gorging on them, the clown was stretching and pulling the bloody loops, twisting the organ into knots. Familiar knots.
'Is that...a flamingo?' asked the old woman."

LOL! I was laughing when I read that! Comedy and horror are great when put together well, like in Evil Dead 2, and that was one of the highlights in this book. It was so refreshing to read a book where the death toll gives 24 a run for it's money, where the plot is just a crazy bloodbath and where you are totally entertained from start to finish.

If you like gory horror with a few chuckles in it which is not to be taken seriously, then Draculas is for you!

What a fantastic read! I love this genre and this was one heck of a ride. Highly recommend if you like the bejesus scared out of you ;)
Warning though...this is NOT Twilght and these vampires are not Robert Pattinson. They do not sparkle, they are not brooding and sensitive. They eat you. In gory detail. With much relish. So avoid if you have a squeamish tummy :)

Non-stop action! A real page turner, that collaboration with the five authors is definitely a win! I wish there were a sequel, as it was kind of short (it's only half of the book).

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Action Packed, Not Enough Depth

I've always been a big fan of Kilborn and have read a majority of his horror books and loved it. This one fell short of my expectations. It was interesting in the beginning, but became repetitive with the running away from the vampires scene in the end.

Most of the action took place in the hospital and it felt more like an action movie than a horror one. The so called vampires weren't truly vampires, but felt more like zombies. There was a lot of running, screaming, transforming into vampires, blood and guts. If you're into those, there's plenty in this book. Be warned, nothing really spine tingling horror though. It was just ok, but I prefer their other books. I would have liked it better if the authors gave more depth into the backstory and history of the skull unearthed. It would be more interesting if we knew more about the origins of the first vampire.

There's no definite ending. It looks like there's going to be sequel so it left me hanging in the end. The novel is only half of the e-book and the rest are short previews of the authors' short stories. Also included are email messages between authors as they planned their writing. Interaction was interesting and amusing, I probably found it more interesting than the actual story.
