Dream Scout: A Coming of Age Fantasy Adventure (His Majesty's Elite) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

A dream scout must follow the paths set before him.

For the Druids of Sorlen Grove, rules are a way of life. They live in service to the Rianaves: ancient, sentient trees who provide everything they need.

But for Elliot Eldinae, a teen-aged dream scout who can transform into a fox at will, life in the secret Grove is not as idyllic as it seems. When the paths set before him in Dreaming lead to Cerion, the land of men, his journeys outside of his hidden Grove unravel the threads of everything he ever thought he knew.

Venturing through Dreaming reveals a beautiful human girl with a magical voice, a scourge of wicked Sorcerers, and a plot to assassinate a prince and steal the throne from beneath an ailing, elderly king.

As the truths of the greater world are revealed to him, Elliot is faced with a choice: find true love and save a prince, or remain at false peace in a controlling Grove where memories are plucked and lies are planted like seeds to keep everyone compliant.

Filled with magic, wonder, beauty, and twists, and alive with multiple award-winning author Missy Sheldrake’s love for the magic of nature, it is the Grove’s will that you should read this unforgettable fantasy adventure.

Start your epic journey with this breathtaking stand-alone novel in the world of the Keepers of the Wellsprings and His Majesty's Elite today!

A tale of magic, adventure, and most importantly finding one’s self.

A tale of magic, adventure, and most importantly finding one’s self.
Every part of the plot was fast-paced and well written, making the book a very enjoyable read. I usually easily foresee plot twists, but DANG. All the plot twists in this story caught me by complete surprise. The world building is beautiful and magical, and never monotonous. It describes the world in such a way that you can imagine it, but is detailed just enough that your mind can see it in its own way. Every time I opened up the (e)book I was completely immersed and felt like I was right there with Elliot. Go do yourself a pleasure and read Dream Scout as soon as possible.

I loved the value the author placed on innocence and purity throughout the adventure without being heavy handed. It an action filled story with highly likable characters and some very interesting concepts. I would recommend this for young adults. I loved the imagery and would love to be able to be human and fox, or be friends either the noble elven people as Elliot did in the story. There is a deep reverence for nature and a simpler, kinder way of living. There is intrigue, romance, suspense, and action in this book… something for everyone. Very good book.

Again, like book 1 of this series, the writing was distancing for some reason. And at times, I had no idea what was going on. At one point, I thought 2 characters died, but later, they were both there. Also, I had no idea why they did the "hunt" where people did die (that section made no sense to me at all). Wasn't sure how to feel about the ancients - they are good, they are controlling. (character's thoughts). I read the whole book so I'll give it 4 stars, but at times it felt like a 3 star book and I just wanted it to be over. I started skipping pages. I read all the books in the other series that this series came from. So I would recommend this author.

This is a stand alone book, although you can read it along with Songspinner. It's hard for me to write a review because I want to tell you everything that's wonderful about this book, but then it would just be one big spoiler! I love this author's writing style--I felt like I could see, smell, and touch everything Elliot did. The world building is fabulous. I ate up all the twists and turns of Elliot's path. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new, complex characters that I really hope get their own books, or at least short stories someday. The lovely sketches of the characters and settings help me visualize the world of the Grove and Cerion even better--I wish more YA books had illustrations like these! If you enjoy magical forests, fantasy, or coming of age romances, you will love Dream Scout!

Missy Sheldrake has truly created a masterpiece in her prequal novel to her magical series ‘Keepers of the Wellspring.”

In this edition the reader is invited in to see from the perspective of Elliot, a young wood elf with the gift of shifting into a fox at will. Through Elliot’s story the reader is able to join in his journey to find purpose, love and friendship in paths he never believed would be open to him. His personal journey is made even more challenging as his scouting gifts allow him the rare ability to journey outside the borders of the grove, and once he does he finds himself increasingly drawn to a human girl and away from the peaceful discipline of the grove he adores.

I fell in love with the world Missy has created even more than I have ever before, and a lot of that comes down to her portrayal of Elliot. His growth through the novel was perfectly written and I found myself feeling all the emotions he does as he learns the reality of the world he lives in.

I would completely recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy or who is looking to explore the genre. What makes Missy’s work even more extrodinary is her ability to write a story for all ages, while this is a young adult novel I felt the supense and the plot were fitting for an older audience of all ages. There’s love, power, action and anticipation, perfectly balanced in the most thought provoking ways.

Lastly scattered throughout the novel is the most amazing artwork created by Missy herself, which pulls the reader further into her world and the characters she has created. If it isn’t on your to be read list yet I urge you to add it immediately, you will not be disappointed in the slightest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written, magical book🤩

“A Druid must follow the path set before him”

Dream Scout is the 2nd book from His Majesty’s Elite series, but it can also be read as a standalone.
It follows the journey of Elliot Eldinae, a wood elf from Sorlen Grove, they live in service to the Rianaves: Ancient, sentient trees who provide everything they need.

Elliot has the gift of dream scouting and being able to shift into fox form, whether in the dreaming, the in-between or waking world. When venturing through dreaming new paths are laid out before him, one that could take him away from the safety of the grove and into the neighbouring human lands of Cerion, where a dark force threatens the Grove and the city.

This was another perfect read from the world Missy has created. Full of magic and great character development, the world building was exceptional. The illustrations in the book are stunning and really help the story come to life. It was full of twists from the beginning, there was so much action as you follow Elliot’s adventures through Cerion, as well as so many touching moments that really make you connect with the characters; I couldn’t stop reading.

Having read Songspinner first it was so interesting to read certain parts from Elliot’s viewpoint and it really made the story come together for me and tied in beautifully. Although it would still make perfect sense reading as a standalone. You learn much more about the Grove and Elliot’s beginnings in this book and it was so captivating, I loved the whole vibe of nature and everything in the Grove being connected. However, without giving away any spoilers the Grove is not entirely what it seems.

If you love Mages, Sorcerers, Elves, Royalty, Friendship and lots of magic, then I guarantee you will love this book and series.

Dream Scout is part of the his majestys elite series along with the companion book Song Spinner, both of which can be read on its own without spoilers, but also helps bridge the gap with some questions you may have had in book one. His Majesty’s Elite is a prequel series to the Keepers of the Wellsprings series, and can be read before, during, or after the main series.

I was so excited to dive into this book and learn more about Elliot, I always wondered what life as a Dream Scout, who could turn into a fox, was like (having met him in #KeepersoftheWellsprings) and I was glad to find I wasn’t disappointed. We got a great mix of magic, sorcery, royalty, and romance while reading and I especially loved the connection to nature throughout. I loved Elliot’s growth throughout the book; the insight into his relationship with his family, the Grove, how he marvels at the outside world, and how all of this impacts his choices and actions as we see him realise things aren’t quite always as they seem. And now Elliot must make sense of what he thought he knew and decide his own path…….
Missy has a magical way with words that as the reader I can’t help but be enchanted. These books have some of the best world-building I have ever read. Missy weaves together multiple layers, between The Grove and The Known Lands and its predecessor, giving us a unique tale of a Wood Elf trying to find his place in the world.
I can’t not mention the audio. Penny’s voice for Elliot is perfection! After listening to the first few chapters, I can’t wait to fully re-read the book via audio.

No matter what book you start with in Missy’s world I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.
