Driving on the Left is the sequel to Jeep Tour but could also be read as a standalone. The story revolves around Jackie Sullivan and her daughter. When the mother-daughter duo sets off on a trip to beautiful landscapes of Ireland, the world looks like a dream, more so to the young Becca, who finds herself falling for the irresistible tour guide named Sean. Packed with humor, relationships, beautiful settings and the folly of love, Olmsted manages to whip up a good read for the avid readers.

Official Review: Driving on the Left by Gail Ward Olmsted

Book Review- 5 Stars
Reviewed by Deborah Lloyd for Readers' Favorite

Jackie Sullivan and only child, twenty-one-year-old daughter Rebecca, set out on a three-week venture to beautiful Ireland; husband Rob will join them when he is able to take a break from his company in Sedona, Arizona. Jackie and Becca take a week-long, cross-country tour with Nomad Tours. The tour guide is the knowledgeable, handsome, and charming Sean Donovan. A budding romance between Sean and Becca is the true adventure in Driving on the Left: Jeep Tour Too by Gail Ward Olmsted. Becca recently (almost) graduated from a Boston college, and her plans are to return to Boston for grad school. Sean hails from a troubled family, where the siblings take care of each other. His job as a tour guide is well-paid, but he is on the road the majority of the time, resulting in little time for a new love relationship. Will this relationship continue, or end?

Gail Ward Olmsted's novel, Driving on the Left: Jeep Tour Too, is an engaging and enchanting story. While there is excellent individual character development, insights into relational aspects are also compelling. Becca's relationship with her parents is an excellent contrast to Sean's family situation. The long-term relationship between Jackie and Rob is also explored, as Jackie needs to make a major decision regarding Rob's wishes for their upcoming retirement years. The similarities between their marriage and Becca and Sean's new relationship are striking and thought-provoking. This novel is more than a light-hearted summer read; it is also a portrayal of the difficulties and joys in new love relationships and decades-long marriages.

"Emotional and entertaining women's fiction and romance novel." Anthony Avina, author & blogger

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

What a whirlwind story! The author does an incredible job of writing a story that both newcomers and established readers alike will love, as the narrative focuses on Jackie 20 years after the author’s previous book, Jeep Tour, and brings Jackie’s daughter in as the dual protagonist of this tale. The imagery that comes with any book set in a beautiful travel location such as Ireland is incredibly vivid as the author takes readers through the sites and brings fresh emotions and a balanced tone of light-hearted bonding and passionate romance.

It is the bond of a mother and daughter that really makes up the core of this story. Both protagonists, Jackie and Becca, are struggling with their own set of problems in their lives. The way the author balances out their own struggles with the relationship that keeps them together and allows Jackie to see herself in her daughter is the emotional lynchpin that keeps this narrative together. The way the author paints the similarities to the first book’s narrative, (i.e., Jackie’s experiences) and the differences with Becca’s journey make this story so engaging to read.

An emotional, bonding, and entertaining women’s fiction and romance novel, author Gail Ward Olmsted’s “Driving on the Left” is a must-read novel. The relatable cast of characters that make up the protagonist’s story and the emotional bond between mother and daughter and the highs and lows that come with that will have readers enthralled and relating heavily to the narrative.

It's deja vu for Jackie Sullivan when her daughter, Becca, is smitten by Sean, the hunky and charming tour guide who's squiring them around the Irish countryside. Jackie knows all about vacation romance as she fell instantly in lust with her tour guide when she was visiting Arizona years before Becca was born. Jackie was so ga ga over Rick that she quit her job and moved cross-country to be with him! While she wants her daughter to be happy, she doesn't want to see this new romance derail her life, which is just beginning now that she's graduated college. Meanwhile, Jackie has relationship problems of her own as she and her husband are at odds over their future. Both ladies have big decisions to make that will have a profound effect on their relationships not just with their men, but with each other.

This book was told with an alternating first-person POV so that the reader could see both sides of the coin with the main characters, and I thought it worked really well. The author did an admirable job in capturing the voices of both a mature, experienced woman and a giddy twentysomething who's in love for the first time. Like Becca, I was swept away by the thought of romance in a foreign land. Sean was not just eye candy, though, he was a well-developed character and I appreciated that the author gave him such an interesting backstory with his family so that he had conflict about more than just Becca. Also, it was nice to revisit Jackie 20+ years after the events of Jeep Tour and see how things had worked out for her and the man she chose. Being a travel geek who's not yet had the pleasure of visiting Ireland, I really enjoyed all the descriptive bits about the country that were sprinkled throughout the story. I felt like I was discovering Ireland right along with Jackie and Becca. I even googled the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge because I was so fascinated by what I'd read about it that I wanted to see it!

This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys Women's Fiction, Romance, and/or mother/daughter stories. Although it's technically a sequel, I think it works just fine as a standalone as the author does a deft job of filling in the reader on Jackie's history when the book begins. Will Book 3 be a story about Becca and her daughter?

Gail Ward Olmsted proves once again that no one writes multi-genre fiction better. She's taken me to the edge of my seat with her twisty legal thrillers. She educates while inspiring with her historical fiction. And then there's her penchant for romance...
"Driving on the Left" is a heart-tugging tale of romantic love and maternal love and the complexities of real life. Ward brings The Emerald Isle alive through Becca and her mother's long-awaited tour. All is bliss until Becca falls for the charming tour guide, while her mother, Jackie, ponders challenges in her own marriage. With themes of self-discovery and sacrifice, "Driving on the Left" offers a wrenching story of how life-changing decisions can unfold almost overnight.
    Highly recommend!

I was expecting a bit more from this book. I liked the characters, and the relationships between them. The story unfolded at a nice pace. For me, though, it just didn't seem to have much depth. I appreciated the family dynamics and the way Sean's entrance into the picture affected that dynamic.

It just seemed to lack a little something

I would definitely read something else by this author, though.

What a deliciously relaxing read! Off to beautiful Ireland, for one thing. But oh, the brilliance of the two characters Jackie and Becca. Becca, especially!!! Olmsted NAILS the dramatic ups and downs of a twenty-one year old in love. Becca's passion for her new-found love, her fierce desire for independence, hr warm and gooey love for her parents, her bursts of immaturity - JUST SO PERFECT. And Jackie! What a bubble bath of a character to sink into! I just really really wanted to see how it all worked out and I wasn't disappointed! This book is SUCH a treat. But where was "The Nephew" on the list at the end? ;)

Driving On The Left, is not what I expected. It was a pleasant surprise. Told from alternating POV, this book is a wonderful depiction of relationships, mother/daughter, husband/wife and quick crushes.
The author did such a remarkable job capturing the atmosphere and the emotions of the character, that I sometimes felt as if it was a true accounting of events. I especially like the easy camaraderie between Jackie and her daughter, Becca, and also her husband, Rob. Great chick lit.
