- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2016Gerth (Bear King), & Lieutenant Shykar, kept a very close eye on Gaston’s caravan.
Wytheville. Jonah (Chief Elk leader, Judas’ son, husband) called a meeting to order to welcome all the other 6 respective clan groups: Reed, Northern Forest, Eliz, Valley, & Harpeth & Bluestone.
The Elk clan members are: Corrun (elder), Rav, Myer, Rufus, Elder Noki, Cortesse (elder Noki’s sidekick, aka Mr. Ironballs), Decan, Gunney, Declan, Solomon, Seren, & Roke.
Sasha is Jonah’s wife.
Leta & Bjorn were welcomed to the group with certain stipulations.
The Cygoa clan, had attacked them. Both sides lost valuable warriors.
Children were killed also.
His father Judas (leader) & the Tyun clan had fought the Cygoa clan for many yrs.
Jonah took a few of his warriors & they were in hot pursuit of the Cygoa clan.
They would seek revenge.
Gaston (ex-clan member, new different clan leader) was going to send Gerth to kill Jonah.
The White Buffalos clan was about to battle it out with the Elk clan warriors: Jonah (leader), Gunney, Solomon, Keana (Jonah’s daughter), Roke brother, Seren (f), Sasha (Jonah’s mate, Gaston (leader), Gideon, Gerth (Gerty), Leta, Nera, Rav, & Ghafir.
Winter was upon them. How will they survive?
After a long journey the group finally arrived at the White Citadel.
5 clans of Wytheville:
Why did Corrun (Nikkt clan leader, Eliz) request Jonah to come see him?
Next stop would be Wytheville (town).
The Cygos clan was now going to attack Gaston’s group who had split from the Elks clan
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written Dark sci-fi book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great fantasy movie, animated cartoon, or better yet a mini TV series. Not my normal read but I but I kind of liked it. That said I will still rate it at 5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2016Beyond the occasional spelling and grammatical errors that could be eliminated by a good editor, I found it easy to overlook them and dive into the plotline and conflicts. I really enjoyed how the author turned what we are presently experiencing into ancient folklore that occurs before "The Event". The true joy for me was reading how the authors describe the things that we take for granted in our modern society from a perspective of ignorance, lost knowledge, innocence, and a nomadic survival lifestyle.
I must confess that the end of the book seemed a little sudden and left me with many more questions than answers. But the characters are believable and the conflict they experience along their journey addresses universal challenges.

Humanity has been bombed back to little more than hunter-gatherers. Arranged in clans, the remaining people live a strict life as described in their books.
Jonah, a young man with a young family, unexpectedly inherits the Elk clan leadership after his father and his father's right hand man die only a day apart. It now falls to him to lead his clan on their yearly Walk from the north country to the south, a meeting point where all the clans over-winter. Along the way he deals with the reactions of the clan to their new leader, predation by both wild animals and highway men, and a mysterious stranger who tells the clan there is a different direction they can walk; one that will take them to the White Citadel.
At the heart of this book is the struggle between faiths, and the struggle between faith and the new. Both protagonists have an old book. We aren't told what's in them, just that they're different. The traditionalists have been following their book, which warns against staying in one place too long and describes their annual Walk south to avoid the winter. Jonah has inherited his clan's book from his father, and back through fathers to the beginning of the Elk clan.
Gaston, the other protaganist, also has a book, but his book doesn't require the Walk. Instead, this book describes a place in the south called the White Citadel; a place where winter never comes and the fields never go fallow in the cold.
Jonah's father was a hard-fisted bully, but Jonah is more willing to to compromise and give the benefit of the doubt. This backfires when the clan divides, Gaston having lured away many of the young warriors. However, this lets Jonah, who isn't impressed with what "tradition" entails, to start modifying some of the more draconian rules to benefit all the clans.
Jonah is a likable character, whereas Gaston is a villain from the beginning. We sympathize with Jonah as Gaston wiggles his way deeper into the Elk clan, betraying Jonah's willingness to let the man Walk with them. A young man, promoted into a leadership role before his education is done is a familiar trope, but Jonah is earnest and willing to bend, unlike his father, and we feel his frustration as matters slip through his control.
The proofreading is very good. A consistent error in the use of opening and closing quote marks is irritating as it muddies who is speaking. When a character has a multiple paragraph speech each paragraph should not end with quote marks, and then start with opening quote marks at the next paragraph.
A consistent error, which made this reader cringe, involves the character who uses a bow and arrows. She is described as "notching (her) bow." I doubt the character gets ready for a fight by carving small marks on her bow. The proper description should be "(she) nocked an arrow."
This book would benefit from closer editing. Plot points are introduced but not followed through on. Some sentences are awkwardly worded and would benefit from rephrasing. Inconsistent use of descriptive words, such as burned out vehicles sometimes referred to as cars, and sometimes as cart, makes it difficult to keep characters in their timeline. The time from the Event is sometimes related as happening at the time of their great grandfathers, and sometimes as several centuries ago. Apparently the leaders can read our modern English, but it isn't clear if anyone else can. This reader found similar editing errors to be small, but important to the understanding of of the plot.
Dustfall is an interesting start to an open ended series. It's a short read with compelling characters and backgrounds. It will be interesting to see if plot points introduced in this volume are expanded upon in the next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to the series
I knew I'd like this book even before i started it, as it was recommended by a friend who also loves most things post-apocalyptic. I love the way it's of the future but reads like a book from the past. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read -- could possibly happen.
A very good read. A bit slow to start but after a couple chapters into it- I found it hard to put down. As read you start to think about what could happen. This book is possible. Thanks to authors. One of the best reads I have had for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Far future survival
Living in the ruins of a USA wiped out by a war and a nuclear winter, birthrates falling, knowledge lost, the people of the Elk tribe are following the traditions that have always kept them safe. They don't know why any more, really. A stranger comes to the clan with a book of different traditions and knowledge and persuades some of the younger clan to follow him to a fabled safe haven.
I liked working out which bits of the past were things I could recognise. Is Cygoa Chicago? Where is Eliz? So many uses for rusted cars! The characters were very appealing, although I did want to yell at them for being so tolerant of the bad guy.
