From the Author

Writing Tracker was a fun experience for me, because at the same time I was writing it, my little brother was also working on a novel. We turned it into a little competition and were able to give each other tips and help with story lines and editing. I am working on editing the second book in the Earthshaker series right now, and am finishing up the first draft of the third. My mom, formerly a teacher, also helped in the editing of Tracker. I can't thank them enough for all the help they've given me.

Tracker by Adrianne Lemke is an interesting twist on typical police drama by utilizing unique fantasy elements. Jason is a young man with the ability to connect to and control the earth, which allows him to track people through it. He's recruited by the police to bring down a crime boss and thrilling drama ensues.

Honestly, it took me a bit to get into the story. I'm a very characterdriven reader, and Jason is very skittish and moody. The reasons become painfully clear as the book progresses, but it felt like there was a wall separating me from fully knowing him as a character for quite a while. That said, there was lots of action to keep my attention until then, though. So much so that when I got to the end, I couldn't believe it was over.

Tracker is a solid start to this series. If you like cop drama, found family, and magic powers, you're sure to enjoy this book.

Tracker gives the reader a new kind of hero, in keeping with compassion and accepting characteristics of today. Jason comes from the streets, after suffering an abusive childhood. He is the oldest of a group of kids who rely on each other to survive. He supports his friends by helping trustworthy local police track criminals who hurt those who cannot protect themselves. He is able to find people, and track them down because he can feel their footprints by touching the ground. Jason has told few people about what he can do, but trusts the two detectives who are his friends. Together, they help each other. When Jason is taken captive by a local criminal, he is not sure he will survive, or if his powers will help him.

Tracker is a suspenseful story that will make you want to continue on in the second part of the series: Kindred.

First off, some CW--this book deals with some heavy subjects, like child abuse/murder and trafficking. That being said, it's an excellent "gritty" (pun absolutely intended) urban fantasy/police procedural with a very different spin--a police detective (Alice) whose informant is a street kid with very special abilities. Jason, the informer, is able to track people through his amazing connection to the earth. His abilities also allow him to use that same connection to literally shake and reshape the earth, rather like an earthquake might. Jason's involvement with the police gets him involved with some very ruthless people who want to use his abilities for their own nefarious ends. The story is told through alternating first-person narrative from the different characters' POV, and Ms. Lemke does a nice job of balancing the scenes. I enjoyed the tension of Alice determination to keep Jason's abilities a secret, even from her partner, and Jason's need to protect his "family" of other runaways. Lots of action that kept me turning pages, and I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series to find out what happens to these characters.

I'm going to start by talking about the amazing new covers. They are gorgeous and eye catching. I knew I had to read this series. I read the synopsis and I was hooked. I was impressed with the writing as it seemed to flow effortlessly even though there was alternating point of views. I feel like I got a great glimpse in to each of the characters and felt really connected to them. My favorite character is Jason probably because of his super power and his need to protect the children. I would recommend this book to any of my fantasy loving friends.

Once I really sank into this book, it was hard for me to put down. Especially in the last third or so, I raced through!

The story starts out with a street kid named Jason who can manipulate earth and track people through it. He has been recruited to help the police arrest a crime boss, and unfortunately, his good intentions get him into serious trouble.

I enjoyed the characters in this book as well as the action. It was heartbreaking learning Jason’s past. I thought his skiddish/paranoid tendencies were realistic and the sad mark of a kid who’s gone through so much trauma.

The climax went a little fast, but still wrapped up the main story satisfactorily. While the main plot was resolved, there were still a few threads left open for future books. The last chapter is really a kicker. I’m looking forward to the next book!
