The ships came at dawn.

Dean’s wife is dead. Her last words:
When the ships come...wear the necklace.

Then the ships arrived.

Cities all around the world reported strange alien vessels descending. Some saw them as the heralds of a new age; others fired everything they had at them. All were taken as the beams lashed down and drew them into the sky.

Dean was left behind, seemingly the last man on Earth.

A trail of clues left by his dead wife guide Dean on a perilous journey across America and beyond, to learn the truth behind the mysterious ships and save humanity from its doom.

But not everything is as it seems.

The Event is the epic first novel of the best-selling Survivors series.

This has all the makings for a great ufo abduction story but on a whole other scale. We’re quickly introduced to Dean who is one four people left on earth. He luckily runs into Ray, Vanessa and Mary. Aside from being the last on earth, they quickly find out that’s not the only coincidence as Mary was at Deans wedding as well as Vanessa. Ray would have been but couldn’t make it but his wife was there. All Dean was told was they were long lost cousins. The second thing they had in common was that each of their spouses left a piece of jewelery that stopped them from being abducted along with details on how to save Earth.

The author ends the first chapter with a great line:
“But since my wife’s death, I’d learned to not get upset by the things I couldn’t control. Alien invasion would fit into that category.”

This was one of the better proofread novels on the Amazon “free” list. However, I still noticed *many* missing commas/hyphens/contractions as well as run-ons. Much as I wanted to leave a good review, I could only make it through a quarter of the novel before giving up. Here are some examples that frequently jarred me out of the flow.

His main problem was what I will call the vague antecedent.
    • My clients’ (of what business/service?) Until 18 percent mark, I had no idea what the main character did for a living or his religion and race until 24 percent.
    • To my office (where? Turns out to be a room upstairs)
    • When I saw it (with no previous mention of what it was)
    • We got there (with no mention of the destination)
    • We made it unscathed (with no mention of the destination)
    • He never told us Ray had a key ring but uses them later.
    • “it’ll be tough to see cars at a complete stop on the road, though we may be able to do it at a really slow pace,” How do you see slowly?
    • They hear where another survivor is, but the text never says they’re driving there. In fact, it never actually mentions driving until they arrive.
    • a beam shines down from the sky, but it never says where the beam lands relative to their moving truck. He also doesn’t mention stopping the truck.
    • What’s your name?” she asked (the main character who she’s actually related to and met). “His name is Carey. He’s my neighbor’s dog
    • “we were standing at the entrance to the room,” Four were mentioned, and we have no idea which he is referring to.
    Close behind were logic lapses:
    • His wife didn’t ask him to save the world in her note, though that’s how he summarized it. (I read it three times to be sure.)
    • If someone had already been there and left open the deposit box, why would they relock the outer door?
    • Disarm is a poor word choice for “this device,” if as the text says it was created to counter the tractor devices not blow up.
    • Why does he suddenly assume a hike across to Jersey when Ray brought a boat and they use it next scene?
    • How does one open a locked Trump hotel-room door with no power?
    • A quarter of the way through the book, he changes what he calls his wife to Janny.
    • People in the US use yards, not meters.
    • A dog at the driver’s feet would be sitting on the pedals.
    • He never got out of the truck to speak with Mary but gets in again in a few pages
    • A ventilation hose for a generator won’t fit through a closed closet door.

This is my first time reading a book from this author and I’m glad I found him. I’m not sure I believe they could get that close to the sun and survive, but maybe in some for future spaceship as they were in it might be possible who knows? I was happy that there was interaction with the characters. I will continue this series and maybe start another by the same author.

This book was recommended to me by one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors, Jasper Scott. This is the first novel for this new author, Nathan Hystad and I have to agree it is very impressive. My Amazon stats may suggest I'm an easy reviewer to get a four or five-star review from. That's only because I rarely post a public review of any book I feel doesn't deserve at least a four-star rating. Instead, I'll send a critique directly to the author if I agreed to review it or, I'll just stop reading part-way through.
This book deserves to be read, the story is fully deserving of a five-star rating and there were surprisingly few Typos, spelling, or grammatical errors, especially considering this is the first book by a new author. The only flaw I found was the author's unfamiliarity with sailboats and the lack of "technical support for this. A group of survivors decides to "borrow" a single-masted sloop from Tampa Florida and sail down to Colombia, around 1,600 miles and estimated it will take "forty hours, or thereabouts," They expect to "...average around thirty to forty miles an hour." While America's Cup Racers may approach forty Knots, the average speed in 2007 was just ten Knots. The engineering and design of these boats, (and their professional crews) today is so far superior to the normal sailboat that Maximum speeds would be far more likely to be below 7 - 8 Knots. With winds normally falling in the nighttime hours the average cruising speed would likely be in the five to six-knot range. Given that our survivors have only a week to save the world at a location in Peru, a different mode of transportation is required.
After a number of adventures getting from the Northeast down to Florida and the adventures getting from Colombia to Peru, the action really picks up speed when they arrive at what this team thinks is their destination. Ha, they've got Millions of miles yet to go and, their faith in the predictions of their significant others years before "The-end-of-the-world" actually comes about will be tested repeatedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars I truly enjoyed reading this book, I particularly appreciated that both the characters and the story line are believable and plausible. I also like that there is no too extensive descriptions or technologies or reasons why events happened as well as motives.

I appreciated the fact that as a reader I sense the writer 's respect as he give room for my imagination to fill brief descriptions with my own details ... In other words the story and the actions- reactions of the characters and events are not overwhelmingly wrapped in lenghty detailed descriptions of the scene and sceneries that could distract from the point... Although the conclusion keep the door open for a sequel, again I appreciated very much that the writer has not tried to manipulate my attention and trap me to wanted read the next and because of that I will.
