Expiation (Shadeward Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 43 ratings

Shadeward: Expiation is the explosive finale to Drew Wagar's Shadeward Saga. A world is pulled apart as past secrets collide with a cataclysmic present. This is science fiction firmly grounded in science fact as modern myth meets old technology. Shadeward: Expiation follows the fortunes of the players from the first three novels. The all-powerful priestesses are whipped to a white heat of vengeance in defence of their god, Lacaille, the star that blazes in the skies above. Coran and the Mobilis crew battle to unravel the keys to survival, but tradition, myth and the vengeful priestesses stand in their way. Lacaille burns ever more fiercely, ever more deadly, above their world of eternal day, everlasting night, burning deserts and frozen wastes. Meru, Kiri and Zoella are now tied by bonds of both hatred and devotion and somewhere from within the emotional maelstrom, they have to find the strength to act, though they still have no idea how to turn the tide of fate. All they know is that the Obelisk continues to call them. The answer when they find it is shockingly unexpected and horribly inevitable.

This is the final book of the exciting and ambitious Shadeward saga. Although it's more fun to read all four in order, each does stand on its own. And what a story! No need to reiterate the intriguing story lines described in the blurbs. Suffice to say it takes a special kind of genius to conceive of, and then write, a saga of this magnitude and complexity and do it this well. Expiation (#4) is a masterful and engaging story all by itself but also neatly, but not without surprises, ties up the threads that were woven throughout the first three books. The Shadeward series is science fiction and fantasy at its best because the “fantasy” is actually grounded in science and isn't fantasy at all. Unfortunately for the characters, in the early books the scientific basis for their experiences and their powers is largely unknown to them, having been lost to the ages, and they are left to speculate or assume, or worse, ascribe them to a sun-worshipping religion. However, some do embark on a quest to learn the truth of their history, and the slowly impending collision of their still-developing worldviews is the overarching driver of the larger story. Through it all, the main characters are vivid and easy to relate to and empathize with, so much so that I found myself rooting for many of them in turn even though some are sworn enemies. The “good guys” in this chapter may be the “bad guys” in the next. Their stories are arresting and easy to follow, and the saga is well-written and fun to read. I especially liked the device of what amounts to thought balloons in italics at key points as characters silently express their questions, observations, and epiphanies. It’s a nice touch and keeps the action going without the narrator interrupting with “He thought” or “She mused” every time. The ending resolution is very satisfying. Get the series!

Expiation was a roller coaster of action and emotional conclusions. The multiple characters which author Drew Wagar introduced us to in the first three volumes meet their final challenges in this incredible tale.

Because Drew made us care so deeply about all these characters it is bittersweet to read about the conclusion of their stories. Shadeward as a four volume story is deeply immersive and brings the characters in it to life in an unusual world that you come to accept as a real place.

Shadeward: Expiation, as the conclusion to this series, wraps up the story of Esurio in a fitting way. It closes out the character arcs and story-line of this amazing world in a realistic way and is filled with much emotion. It also sets the stage for future parallel tales in this universe, while concluding this small planet's tale in a realistic way.

If you have not started reading the Shadeward series I HIGHLY recommend it for the amazing characters, incredible blending of a sci-fi genre which reads more like a fantasy adventure. Both fans of the fantasy genre and those who enjoy sci-fi will love this series. I look forward to future novels by Drew Wagar. He has already announced a second series set in this same universe, but with more of a space opera style, entitled Hegira.

Having finished this series, I realized this book (and series) stuck with me more than I expected. I was thinking about it long after it was over, and that's the sign of a good story.

It's hard to write a review of this without it simply coming across as a synopsis, an "if X meets Y" comparison, simple praise that doesn't really say anything, or criticism for the sake of sounding profound. Once you know the core concept of the series (and by book 4 I certainly would hope you'd clued in!) it boils down to your own tastes. You're either here for the ride, or you checked out long ago. I stuck around, and was not disappointed.

If I must at least tease my feelings for the series as a whole, the first Shadeward book reminded me of Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders series, the end of this last one reminds me of the final Rama novel by Arthur C Clarke and Gentry Lee.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read.

In the interests of transparency I should preface this review by saying that I know Drew Wagar. Not well, we have not met in personas yet, but online in the course of playing a few space-based computer games.

The 4 books of The Shadeward Saga creates an interesting view of a possible outcome of humankinds, habitation, some might say ‘Infestation’, of our home Sol system. Set in a distant part of our galaxy (Maybe not that far really as that galaxy is concerned) we learn of one colonisation of another solar system on a not particularly hospitable tidally locked planet.

It is to Drew’s credit that on the whole he gets the science right in this series. It shows his extensive knowledge of how the universe works as he weaves real science into this fictional work and yet still makes it a damn good read. The characters are believable, the storyline faultless, the ‘romance’ handled with a lot more tact and decorum than a lot of Sci-Fi writers manage, all go to make this compulsive reading.

For those of you who are familiar with Drews writings, you will spot one of his favourite descriptions of a characters action, these do not however detract from the story but it does give those of us who already read his books, the chance to play a bit of a game to spot them, and of course rib him a little over at a later date.

Obviously, read these books in order to get the full benefit, and add this talented storyteller to your list of ‘Must Read’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it from start to finish

Having read thousands of books, I would say this one had me in its grasp from start to finish. I practically see no issues with it, the character development was fine and credible, the author is not afraid to show us some truly dramatic moments where not everything is black or white, the story was enthralling and the conclusion was climactic.

In short, I enjoyed it and left me wanting to know more about this author. I am seriously tempted to try the Elite Dangerous Saga now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect blend of characters, plot and plausible SciFi based setting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2020
Wow - the culmination of 4 books is EPIC! I've been reading the works of Drew Wagar since he was a self.-publishing fan-fiction author and the quality of writing just gets better and better.

When I started the shadeward series, it felt like a familiar style of "fantasy" books, but it fairly quickly became evident that it was actually a realistic and we'll thought out SciFi series. The characters have grown naturally within the story and you feel a real connection with them - which (no spoilers) made this book quite emotional.

For every twist that I managed to predict, there were many others that completely sideswiped me. The ending of the book was perfect, and also sets up the possibility of further side-stories, which is hugely exciting.

I now feel the need to go back and immediately restart the entire series knowing what I know now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful End
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 19, 2020
This series couldn't have ended in a much more spectacular fashion. All of the strings are tied up nicely, and for a story that is so epic in its scope, it hits all of the right emotional beats. This story has everything. It is also, in no uncertain terms, the end of the journey. Kiri, Zoella and Meru won't grace another page again. But, with the way their tales are told, I think I'm okay with that.

Drew Wagar has creating something really special with the Shadeward Saga and I can't wait to read more of his work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing finale to the series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 2020
I've very much enjoyed the first three books in this series although I found the third part a little heavy going in places. But this one is truly outstanding, full of adventure, conflict and emotion. When the Shadeward saga begins it seems like we are in a fantasy world but it quickly becomes apparent that we are in the realistic setting of another planet although some things are unexplained. In this final book all is revealed. I'd now like to go back to the beginning and read the whole series again.
