Fate Lashed: Ethereal Earth, Book 2 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.6 out of 5 stars 498 ratings

Some heroes are born, some are made, and some are willing to fake it for the right pay.

Gabe abandoned life as a conman after the disasters in Lincoln, and he managed to carve out a bit of peace with the scraps he had left. Unfortunately, bad guys suck at respecting personal boundaries. So, together with Heather and a group of weird new companions, he finds himself shackled to a horrifying cosmic game with sky-high stakes, inscrutable goals, and rules that seem to change every five minutes. And when old gods and monsters resurface to make things so much worse, he's finally forced to admit that he might not be talking his way past any of it.

Fate itself rises to force-feed Gabe a cliché quest, leaving him only to find the artifact, get paid the fortune, and try to make it out alive...and if there's enough time, maybe save the whole stupid world.

Fate Lashed is the sequel to Hero Forged and is the second audiobook in the Ethereal Earth series - an ongoing tale about the nightmares we create, those they create for us, and a few people who refuse to take any of it too seriously.

Even better than the first! I'm addicted and can't wait for more. Read this urban fantasy series!!
This book was amazing, really. Even better than the first. Rich in humor and overflowing with creatures, gods and other mind bending beings, this book had my emotions up and down throughout. Action, mystery, adventure, love and hate excel throughout this all out battle for reality story. I really enjoyed the authors concepts on reality; ethereal and physical existence. Also... I laughed a lot reading this book and so will you.

This second book is even better than the first. I was struggling to think of how to explain that opinion, and then it hit me. Josh Erikson explains growth, power and magic better than any other author I’ve read. Here is an example. Late in the book, a character has to attempt a very complex and desperate task, but has no idea how to do it. In another book it would go like this, “Henry knew he was powerful, why else would he be at Dingleberries School For Really Powerful Magicians, and in his rage he reached down deep, deeper than ever before and found the wellspring of his power. Without really understanding how, he seized it and [waved his hands, wriggled his nose, broke wind, found a random stick and waved it, whatever] and the problem was solved. Yay, Henry!”

Erikson is not so lazy. The character in this book metaphorically emptied his pockets on to a phantom table and poked the bits about with his fingers while thinking about how some of what he found there could be combined to accomplish the task. Then he built a magical doothingy. If you have ever walked down the aisles of a hardware store looking for some widget that you needed to fix your mailbox and then found it in the plumbing section, you know what this character was about. He is doing fabulous DIY magic, on the fly, with just what he has handy. My word, it felt both wondrous and…do-able.

This author is singing many of the same songs we’ve all heard before, but the arrangement, the tonality of his voice and the instruments he has chosen for backup has changed the song from a familiar jingle to a tune that is a true joy to hear again in a new way. These first two books have been virtually cliché-free. Josh Erikson is a skilled story teller and we are lucky to be invited to sit around the fire and have him regale us with joyous and frightening wonders.

This series is the literary equivalent of Supernatural, or Grimm, or - name your favorite, fun, escapist TV series - full of creatures from myth, great characters, astonishing action sequences, and relationships - all tied together with well-crafted worldbuilding.

Although, to be fair, books have been doing that well before TV was ever conceived of…but, you get the irony, right?

Just give the series a try…you won’t be disappointed.

Josh has done it again. He produced another genuinely fun book that you didn't want to put down. Everything from the witty dialogue to the roller coaster and plot twists. On to the next book in the series. Happy to have found an entertaining series.

When someone tells you are the chosen one make sure you know what you're chosen for, are you the savior or the sacrifice. It's book two and just like the first one it's really interesting with lots of good characters and strange creatures. The main character really wants to be a selfish jerk but keeps failing miserably. Good pacing and lots of action of course it's pretty grim in places but there is laugh out loud humor that will make friends or family members wonder what you are reading. I only gave it five stars because I couldn't give it six stars.

Just freaking loving this series. I don't know you Josh. But just have to say if you read this. I heart you and this series. One of the hardest thing for me over the last 4ish years of pandemic and politics and, for me, raising teenagers was the loss of reading. The biggest joy in my life, closely tied by my family and the hard years just sucked it out of me. You've given the joy back to me. For the first time in a long time I am sucked into an awesome world and reveling in the tale. Thankyou so much! I might even get back to my own creations. Thanks for all of it.

If you like books from Neil Gaiman (American Gods) or Jim Butcher (Dresden Files), then you shouldn't miss Ethereal Earth. Conceptually, there's a lot of overarching similarity in terms of backgrounds and events between these books but nevertheless, still an enjoyable read. No crappy PC and SJ nonsense; just a pair of good read (I bought and read both books in the series and will look forward to more from this author).

EDIT: Normally the story goes downhill from book 2 of the series onward but Josh did keep a good story going and I hope he can top what he had done so far in book 3 and beyond.

EDIT 2: Note to Josh - please don't bleed the story dry with too many books. Know when to end it and maybe start another in the same universe. Some authors did it very well with a twelve book series but others just got too dry, repetitive and boring.

This book has everything I look for in a read: a relatable character with depth and an evolving personality, plenty of action to keep the suspense going, some clever twists and witty jokes, a real development of a relationship that really sinks its claws into your heart, and a good wait to reveal who really is the true villain. Overall, just had a great time reading this and CANNOT wait for the next one.
