- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2025I devoured Before and After and Flesh and Blood in a month. Every chance I had I was reading. So beautifully written, with moments I gasped and laughed out loud. Had me hooked from beginning to end. Cannot wait for more from this fantastic author. Definitely added him to my top favorites. Excited to buy his other works as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2024I’m so glad this story did not end in a morbid way. Ben’s character is truly admirable and his love for others is unlike any characters I’ve read about. Ive thoroughly enjoyed reading about his journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2025This book really held up against the first one, I would love for this series to continue. I would like to know more about their lives after this, the babies growing, Ben’s cancer, Natalie’s illness. This series is just TOO GOOD.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024I just want you to know that if Brown had died, I would've rated this a 1 star. So, I'm glad she didn't.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025Two very satisfying stories, the duo ends with a high note and hopefulness. It can end here but leaves room to continue the story as well. It was been a while since I so thoroughly enjoyed a story, I think I read them both over a weekend, could not put them down. This is a zombie story, but not as scary as some.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2024I feel like the second character was thrown in without notice so I was confused. When they finally tied the two together it made sense but it would have been nice to know earlier in the book. I feel like a lot of things were left unanswered. Not a bad book, definitely an easy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2025This book had me in a chokehold hold! I absolutely it loved it! The anxiety I felt for Ben and Bear!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2022I thoroughly enjoyed Flesh and Blood which is book 2 in this fascinating series. I was very happy to find out how Ben, Brown and Bear were handling the apocalypse. Even though there are violence and huge difficulties that transpired throughout the story, there are also lighthearted moments that caused me to laugh out loud. I sincerely hope Andrew writes book 3 very soon. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Flesh and Blood is the second instalment of the Before and After duology where we are once again thrown into the crazy lives of Ben and Brown. Following on from the first book, they are on the hunt for a functioning cancer treatment ward to treat Ben’s deteriorating condition and now a new character’s story is being told.
I absolutely adored this follow up, Shanahan once again brought us everything from humour, to suspense to absolute heartbreak, and we finally got more of those adrenaline fuelled zombie chase scenes! I loved Natalie’s story just as much as Ben and Brown’s and found myself totally captivated throughout. There is just so much emotion and feeling in this series, it’s not just an apocalypse story, it is a story of hope, endurance and determination even in the harshest of circumstances, it truly left a lasting impression on me in the best ways.
I loved the conclusion of this duology, I felt it nicely wrapped up the story in a satisfying way whilst still leaving the option open for additional books. Overall, this was an amazing read and I would highly recommend both books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story, great writing
I loved the first book and was looking forward to the second (and final) part. I was thrilled to find that it was just as sublime and well crafted.
Enough action to keep the plot moving along; even Manchester became a character in its own right.
Some great scenes and descriptions of how to dispense with zombie hordes. I loved it.
Can't wait to see where this author goes next.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unrealistic but beautiful ending
Alright, so I liked the first book but felt it wasn't fleshed out enough. I feel differently about this one. This felt more put together, and more detailed. It also had some surprising and unrealistic twists and turns. But I'm not reading fiction for immense realism. Turning off my analytical brain and just enjoying this book, it was great. A wonderful ending to the first book which captivated me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fab sequel
I've been so excited to read this sequel to Before and after, as i absolutely loved that book!
This continues the story of Ben, our recently slimmed down cancer ravaged main character and his sweet doggie Brown - but we also meet Natalie, who's been stuck in a different way herself.
At times it was lengthy and i skimmed bits of it for that, but ultimately it was a lovely read and i enjoyed the ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely gripping and equally as hilarious as the first book!
I (luckily) stumbled upon the 1st book about Ben and Brown during the first looong lockdown. It was so good that I had to buy a copy for my family and most of my friends who also loved it. I found the characters and plot so fresh amongst my apocalyptic reading. Maybe it was lockdown, maybe it was a saturation of the World War Z type stories (also my favourite) but I read it in one sitting and was happy to make multiple purchases so I could share the story with friends. This sequel is no disappointment to how much I loved the first. The way Shanahan makes an end of the world scenario hilarious as well as intense is pretty amazing. Just when you think there is no hope, a glimmer shines out from an unexpected place. It wasn't predictable, nor incredulous and I felt like I was back with old friends. Shanahan is now one of my favourite authors and I've been eagerly anticipating the arrival of this book. If you haven't got it already - do your brain a favour and download it. It's well worth the ride!
