Flowers in the Frost: The Untold Stories of Online Teaching Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

How long does it take to build an online teaching business? 6 weeks? 6 months? a year?

What do you do when the tips you've collected don't work and the results aren't there? I know those 1-hour webinar gurus promise you'll make big money online before you even know it. You may have tried their tricks and wondered what's wrong with you and why their advice didn't work. As appealing as it may sound, somewhere deep within we know that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

There are no blueprints or easy-to-follow formulas when you’re faced with the daily grind of running an online teaching business. What you need is to know whether your long journey will lead you to the destination you want. What you need is the inspiration to keep moving you forward when the momentum from a stellar online course wears off.

This book is a unique collection of real-life stories, inspiration and actionable advice from an online language teacher like yourself, who started out online with a naive ambition to make her teaching experience more fair and meaningful.

If you started your own online teaching business but found yourself embarrassed by your “lack of amazing results” or “rapid growth,” if you wondered how soon your efforts would pay off, if you felt uneasy about aggressive marketing that everyone says you should adopt to succeed, this book will inspire you to do things your own way.

You’ll find enough tips to help you turn your business into a memorable brand that focuses on making meaning and impact.

Look Inside...

The chapters cover the most relevant topics that online teachers need to pay attention to as they set out on this journey:

  1. Building a Business in the Face of Moral Injuries
  2. Adopting 5 Important Mindset Shifts
  3. Embracing the Long Journey
  4. Staying Ahead of the Market as an Online Teacher
  5. Experimenting with Online Teaching Formats
  6. Creating a Product to Discover More Freedom
  7. Growing your Tribe the Unconventional Way
  8. Writing that Transforms and Affects Change
  9. Overcoming Perfectionism
  10. Dealing with Money Fears
  11. Working with a Coach as a Way to Build Resilience for a Long Journey
  12. Leading, Not Just Teaching, Your Community
  13. Finding the Strength to Keep Going

Early praise for the book:

"I couldn't put it down yesterday - the structure "personal story - thoughtful further exploration" got me hooked and I just wanted to read the next chapter. Genius. I read the last chapters at a cozy little café I've just discovered, on a date with myself for the first time in ages. I've enjoyed your book tremendously, every word speaks to me.. I'll get back to it again and again for sure. Thank you Elena for such a wonderful read." ~ Danae Florou, a teacher of Greek.

"OMG, I am LOVING reading about you and your personal story. I just made it to the middle of the first chapter, but I'm already hooked." ~ Ines Ramos, a teacher of Spanish.

"At the end of chapter 3 now, and so many ideas and inspiration are blossoming in my head. I already know my paperback copy will be filled with notes on the sides, little doodles, plenty of highlighted sentences..." ~ Elena Gabrielli, owner and founder of Hitoritabi Languages.

"I have just read the whole book. But because I was so inspired and read it all in almost one sitting, I'm going to go back and read it all over again! There's so much there that gave me an "a-ha" moment, but one quote stands out: "Share your vision - not your tips". ~ Clare Whitmell, owner and founder of English at Home.

I'm a teacher, an online programs designer, and a smart business strategist. I was opted out of the *real job* at a College (aka "made redundant"), which opened my eyes to an opportunity of creating a small online teaching business with an impact going beyond a classroom.

I am on a mission to help teachers and coaches work smarter by designing transformative online programs that sell and scale.

In my free time I love doing yoga and Pilates, reading and thinking, sharing some crazy ideas with my creative husband and taking (free) everything-is-possible art lessons from my two kids.

Elena and “Flowers in the Frost” are such a breath of fresh air in the online teaching world. Nowadays there are so many in-your-face, commercialized business coaches that make creating a course seem overwhelming and make you question if you’ll ever be good enough if you don’t have the best and most expensive of everything. Elena, on the other hand, has managed to keep a down-to- Earth tone and teach you down-to-Earth ways to run your down-to-Earth business. She definitely doesn’t hold back in “Flowers in the Frost” and shares all of the real life situations that occur when teaching online and gives practical advice to conquer it all head-on. The passion, dedication, and excitement she gets from helping other online teachers is undeniable and her writing speaks to the heart...This is a must read for people considering starting to teach in the online world! Thank you Elena!

If you've ever wanted to take your talent, knowledge, passion, and empathy as a teacher or coach online...If you know all about the teaching world, but aren't sure what the business world has in store for you--or if it aligns with your values. If you're open to being creative, playing the long game and supporting others, then this is the book for you. This is not a simple 'how to' book, but a collection of stories that illustrate important lessons you must learn as an online teacher or coach. If you're just getting started with your online teaching journey, this book will give you the mindset, strategies and the courage to set out right and to last. If you're already on your way? You can still return to this book again and again for reminders, course correction, permission to stick to your values. I definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this book by your side as you embark on your online teaching business journey.

Elena shares the highs and lows of running an online teaching business. She tells it as it is. And whilst some of it, like how long this journey will take is hard to digest, it's exactly what we need to hear when that program or product doesn't sell or the open rates of your emails are dismal and you're beginning to wonder whether all this effort is worth it.

Just as you're contemplating ditching everything, she shares the joy of creating, living life on your own terms, sharing your vision and making a difference to your clients' lives.

Each chapter is filled with examples from her experience and her clients'. She doesn't sugarcoat the downsides, but at the same time, she inspires us to keep going, to rise above our fears and tells us that we can all get through the hard times.

Whether you're at the start of this journey or in the middle of it, you're going to need this book to dip in and out for inspiration ,solace and motivation.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who want to build their online teaching business on their own terms

This book shows you that it's possible to earn money teaching online on your own terms - without filling your social profile with self-promoting posts, cold-emailing, attending networking events or taking every student who knocks on your door (introverts, rejoice!)

I found it to be a breath of fresh air, because it gives you an unpolished look behind the scenes and tells you the bitter truth: No, it's not possible to build a sustainable business in a month (or even 6), no matter what those webinars and blog articles promise you.

But the good thing is, it also tells you what it takes to start earning a living from teaching online.

Any change starts with a mindset shift, and this book will change your perspective as to how you approach building your teaching business to help you reach your business goals faster (and with less hustle).

And I loved the personal stories, too, because they showed me that I'm not alone with my struggles, and that it's the part of the process.

It's a motivational book that makes us think about what is important for us in life and take action now in order to achieve our goals of a more fulfilling life. She talks about the insecurities that we all face and it makes us feel that we're not less than others. Finally, it teachers us that money is not all in life. It makes us rethink about the role of money and consider it simply as a means of getting what we want and therefore the goal shouldn't be to make a lot of it, but just enough to be able to enjoy life.
