The Girl I Didn't Marry (Jessie & Nick Book 1) Kindle Edition
Nick Moretti met the girl he wanted to marry at age fourteen. Jessie Schultz--the most beautiful girl he'd ever known. From the moment he saw her, he knew she'd be his wife someday.
Jessie fell hard for the bad boy with the smoldering eyes. Too bad her father would rather rearrange Nick's face than let his only daughter date the son of a local thug. So while she's living under her father's roof, Nick has to stay away. Just a little longer...
Then Nick gets hurt.
The doctors tell him he'll never walk again. But what do all those doctors know? Nothing, that's what. Nick knows how to work hard to get what he wants.
Jessie doesn't care if Nick is in a wheelchair. He still holds her heart, even if he can't walk. But how can she make him see he's the same man she's always loved? How can they spend their lives together if he won't even open his front door?
Note: The Girl I Didn't Marry ends in a light cliffhanger, which is concluded in Book 2, The Girl I Didn't Kill For, with a satisfying HEA. Both are available for purchase now.

About the author

Annabelle Costa is a physical therapist who loves the following things, not necessarily in this order:
--Chick lit (both reading it and writing it)
--Cupcakes (both making them and eating way too many of them)
--British accents (both listening to them and pretending to have one)
--80s movies (both watching them and quoting them out of context while her friends frown in confusion)
--Pop music (both listening to it and singing it very, very badly in the car and/or shower)
Annabelle keeps a blog at http://annabellecosta.blogspot.com/, where there's contact information so you can tell her about how much you also love making and eating cupcakes. (Admit it!)

- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI really enjoyed this read! Ms Costa' s writing is absolutely enthralling!! This read has some of my favorite elements of young love, a relatable heroine, a strong yet wounded hero. There is a cliffhanger at the end so I have just started reading the 2nd book in the series. It is a really great book with an engrossing plot however there is strong language and sexual references so I would caution you on that. Even though I don't usually read books with language and sexual references, this plot just sucked me in. Now onto the next book in the series....
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed reading Jessie and Nick's story. Looking fwd to their HEA. Four stars only because December is so far off still....
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI normally hate cliffhangers but I knew both parts were already out, so i downloaded them at the same time so i was ready. It's been pretty interesting so far. I'm not normally into the teenage angst type books (I'm getting a little too old for that stuff) but their issues were more mature than a lot of high school drama. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book that I'll be starting in just a minute!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved this story ❤️❤️❤️. It is so well written and natural that you really share every feeling with the characters. I just simply felt that connection between Nick and Jessie that made them hung up on each other despite every obstacle and through all those years. I really recommend this book to those who love sweet and funny characters, love and drama!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2021Format: KindleAnnabelle Costa is one of the best writers of contemporary Disabled/Injured Hero romance fiction. Her plots are absorbing, her MCs complex human beings, her story arcs intriguing, her writing literate and lively, and her endings both satisfying and credible. The role of the MC's disability was also a significant element of the tomance.
Until this book. I'm embarrassed to acknowledge that I didn't pay attention to the part of the title in parentheses. Thus the ending had me literally crying out tomatoes.
The beginning conceit is original and catchy. The thirty-something male MC is in a nightclub he owns, and he is engaged by a much younger and scantily-clad female server. The revelation of his wheelchair brings that flirtation to a screeching halt. This in turn prompts the start of a seemingly endless series of vignettes told from the perspective of this MC, Nick, alternating with that of Jessica, his high school sweetheart of 10 years before.
In due and way overlong course, we learn of the cute start of the relationship of the MCs, the rather ugly family dynamics of each, the event tat paralyzed Nick, and, more concisely, the unfolding of their lives until the unsatisfying dénouement on the last page.
While the characters, both main and secondary, are colorful and interesting, they are NOT enough so to justify the length of this volume. This is, after all a romance, not a saga, and their justbisn't enough of it. The sex is limited to a single, admittedly pivotal, scene early in the book, with nothing save scattered references to it for the rest of the volume.
As usual, Ms. Costa's writing is generally far and above that of most other independent authors of this type of romance. But there are ccasional annoying lapses of grammar, syntax and word ussge.
So, if you comfortable with delayed gratification, the dearth of sex, and the absence of a satisfying conclusion, you can do a lot worse than read this story, if only for the quality of the writing. But I urge you to start with ealier books by this writer for a full appreciation of her talents.
Good reading!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2017Format: KindleI was a huge fan of another one of Costa’s books- The Time-Traveler’s Girlfriend. When she asked me to review her latest book, I couldn’t say no! I am voluntarily reviewing a free copy from the author. When I started reading this book, I did not expect to like it and be as sucked in as I was! It starts with a guy who seems to be a gangster getting a lap dance. Then the story goes back to high school when this gangster named Nick is a straight A student with a major crush on the new girl- Jessie. The story goes back and forth between Nick and Jessie and tells of their Romeo and Juliet-like relationship. Tragedy strikes in An Affair to Remember-style and Nick and Jessi lose touch after high school. We find out where they are now and the book ends with them finally meeting again. Unfortunately, it ends on a total cliffhanger in preparation for the next book.
You can’t help but feel for our main characters and the difficulties that life throws their way. This book truly is like a Shakespearean tragedy! Yet it totally sucks you in and doesn’t let you put it down. I can’t wait to read the next book in the hope that these star-crossed lovers get their happily ever after. I didn’t always like the main characters, but they’re so well-written and fleshed out that I could understand their choices even when I didn’t agree with them. I would highly recommend this to fans of romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great story, about Jessie and nick. I couldn't stop reading it. It brought back memories of the old neighborhood some good some not. I like the way this author writes but all the book I read always the main character's has a disability or something. Great story on to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA delightful read! It is like a novel-length prologue to the second book "The Girl I Didn't Kill For". It builds up enough tension and creates an amount of obstacles which hopefully will be surmounted in the second book. Can't wait for Jessie and Nick find their HEA!

5.0 out of 5 stars Endearing, engrossing and enjoyable read.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThink I've found another winner here - Miss Costa's writing keeps me coming back for more. It's a rare talent to write male and female protagonists with equal ease, but she does this in spades. As with another of her series, we have two likeable characters in situations made more difficult due the main guy being in a wheelchair, but there the similarity ends. I'm constantly surprised by this writer's ability to come up with fresh angles on tales as old as time. And the dual pov is handled with confidence and style making it and engrossing read. Yet again, I've made a huge investment in her characters and am chaffing at the bit to see how this series continues.
