About the author

Max (she/her) grew up just outside of New York City, spending most of her formative years outdoors creating wild ghost hunts with neighborhood kids, setting booby-traps to capture unwitting family members, and building clubhouses on top of ten-foot walls. Max wrote her first story at the age of twelve and there began her romance with the world of fiction. Through the years, Max has written several short-stories and poems, all of which met the wrath of the “Not Good Enough” monster and ended in fiery demise.
Max regained her confidence when she began writing scholarly articles and research theses on her first trip through graduate school. It took several years for her to break the habit of the formal writing that marred her creativity. Max writes primarily LGBTQ+ sci-fi/fantasy, crime/thriller, and romance stories. Max describes her women-loving-women novels as "edgy romance and crime/thrillers about women rising from the ashes of their experiences and thriving in the context of love and relationships."

An intriguing series continues with another good, entertaining story with interesting characters & hot sex scenes.
It was enjoyable with nice flow & effortless progression to its engaging narrative & its ever-expanding roster of likeable & personable core characters make it a very very very enjoyable to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2019This was such a well told story that I lived in the pages. Dax had so much past trauma and drama that she blocked everyone out of her life. Willa wanted nothing more than to break down those walls that Dax had built around herself. Their story was not an easy one. I just wanted the best for both women. It was good to meet up with some of the characters from this author's previous books. It helped define the story even more. It is amazing what love in it's purest form can do to demolish those invisible walls. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves romance. Max Ellendale has given readers another masterfully written book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2020I love this story. But having Willa come 15 times in that period of time, ridiculous!!! But, I guess if you just want to read about sex between two women I am sure it rocks!! Over all, good writing!!
When is your next book due out?
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2023This is the first book I read by this author but it will not be the last. I really enjoyed it and loved the two main characters. It had two broken hearts that came together to heal. It was sweet, I am a hopeless romantic and love a book like this and very happy to find out this author has many more books to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2019I saw a Lesbian Review for this book pop up on Twitter which made me check it out. I realized this was set in the same "world" as two books I have read by this author: Wildrose and Rabbit. Although this is a standalone book, there are snippets with those characters in the story and references to past events from those books. I loved those stories, especially Rabbit, so I gave this book a shot. I couldn't put it down. The emotional depth explored and beautiful writing was riveting. The two main characters are both suffering from emotional hurt, but both heal each other and support each other in mending other relationships in their lives as well. The author has beautiful descriptions of the setting in this story as well as the emotional exchanges that will have you rereading paragraphs just to soak in all the feelings you'll experience. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll fall in love alongside them and this story will be sitting with you long after you finish it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2020This is a wonderful story of two people slowly building trust in each other & the world. Beautiful depiction of two hurt souls taking a chance on each other & slowly building a life together. Great supporting characters & beloved characters from past books make appearances to make the reader feel like you're part of a deep, rich community. You'll read this one again & again - like visiting old friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2023The storyline was good. I liked the edginess of the first half with one of the main characters. I didn't feel real steamy romance, not that they didn't fall for each other, but just didn't feel the chemistry on my part. Might have helped if i knew what Dax was thinking. She seems very cold. I feel the terms of honey and darlin were used way too early and too much... to intimate it felt rushed. It's very clear that Dax should have been in therapy and not have a gun in her possession.
I didn't feel all the cold was bc of her ex. She had a quick temper and reckless.
By 45%, I was looking for the end. It dragge and had a few hot spots, but they only lived a paragraph or two.
At least 200 pages could have been cut out. Epilogue wasn't an epilogue but a continuance of the store.
It was a good rea. I just felt like a fanfic story day after day after day of nothing, really.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021I loved the characters in this book. Willa with her caring heart, not only for animals but for Dax too. Dax and her ability to trust someone else.
I was so happy to see the appearance of Maggie and Sali.
Next up...Book #6.

This author has a way of drawing you deep into the characters. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish this book even though I had to work early the next day!

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful and compelling read
I got this book through KU and was so impressed that I have bought it as this is one I definitely need in my collection. Max Ellendale is an incredible author. She writes so movingly about PTSD and the struggles of Dax to trust and let someone in, that someone being Willa, the local vet, who is not entirely baggage free herself.
Dax is an enigmatic blend of skitterish wild animal, and hardened, kick ass law enforcement officer, and Willa finds herself drawn to her. Tenacious without being pushy, Willa slowly chips away at the barriers Dax has thrown up around herself and what follows is an unconventional start to a relationship. Willa is patient, kind and has a calm and unruffled way with animals, which stands her in good stead when it comes to handling Dax. Little by little Dax opens up to Willa.
Ellendale excells at slowly moving the story and the relationship forward with subtle little events that are so meaningful. One scene where Dax is engaging in some target practice ends with her pulling Willa into a wordless hug from behind, is such a huge moment in the book and there are many more like this. I really cannot recommend this book, from such a talented writer, enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Recommend.
So initially the blurb didn't pull me in but it was recommended so I gave it a read and I am so happy I did. The growth between the two mains is amazing and I was stoked the book was fairly long. I felt massively for the events both had been through and how it shaped them the angst and the love felt realistic and believable and addressed well. The sex scenes were good and steamy and the overall feel was amazing and one of the best books I have read this year. I started with this and will now look at reading the rest.
