Haunted House Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,928 ratings

At Butler House, a series of grisly murders over a century have led many to believe it's haunted. To one scientist, it's the perfect place for an experiment in fear. Eight people, each chosen because they lived through a terrifying experience, are offered a million dollars to spend one night at Butler House. They can take whatever they want with them - religious items, survival gear, and weapons. All they need to do is last the night.

But there is something evil in this house. Something very evil...and very real. And when the dying starts, it comes with horrifying violence and brutal finality. There are much scarier things than ghosts. Things that will kill you slowly and delight in your screams. Things that won't let you get out alive.

I picked this book up from Pixel of Ink website for free. I honestly don't think I would had gotten it otherwise. After reading this book, I KNOW for a fact I wouldn't had gotten it. If you want to read a psycholgical thriller that will scare the crap out of you...then this is your book!

I don't like ghost stories, stories about evil stuff, I can handle the blood, guts and gore. But when they start to mess with my sleep, then it's gone too far. This book caused me to have some screwed up dreams. Mr. Kilborn penned a novel story that will stick with for a very, very long time.

In "Haunted House," we are introduced to a series of characters that have appeared in other Kilborn books. Mal and Deb Dieter, married couple. Their story began in the novel Endurance. Mal has lost a hand and Deb has lost both feet. Both use prosthetics to get through life. They are constantly haunted by what happen to them at the Rushmore Inn in West Virgina. They struggle everyday with paranoia and sleeplessness.

Roy Lewis and Tom Mankowski are both cops. Roy is where the story starts. He's in for a fight of his life. Both Row and Tom appear in "The List." In the "Haunted House," Tom is out to try and find Roy. Having a hunch, he knows that he has went to the Butler house to win the million dollar prize.

Dr. Frank Belgium, is a molecular biologist. He makes an appearance in the novel, "Origin." He got all tangled up with Satan himself during the Project Samhain. (Just freaky)

Sara Randhurst comes in with the novel, "Trapped." Sara has to survive Rock Island. Only problem is after she survives, she looses everything that is important to her. She is struggling to get a grip on her life to get her baby back.

Fran, Josh and Duncan VanCamp appear in the novel, "Afraid." This trio has moved to Hawaii and started fresh. They are prepared beyond prepared. I actually would love to know more of this family and what they went through. They have a capuchin monkey named Mathison and a Begal named Woof. Of this book, this trio was my favorite characters.

Moni Draper who was in, "Serial Killers Uncut, Whiskey Sour and Stirred." She has stopped the dancing and know is a dominatrix. She brings a foul mouth, I hate you and the world attitude in this book. She finds who she needs to be to survive and does it better than anyone else.

With all these characters, they all become united as one and team together to survive their nightmares at the Butler house. By banding together, they promise to stick it out. Only problem with that, they do end up seperated. However, with the past reminding them of their fears, they overcome adversity and survive the horrendous events. I won't go into how they survive, but let's just say, they all come out with some awful scars to tell of.

In all, as much as I'm curious af the stories that each character had to endure, I don't think I can pull myself together to read them. "Haunted House" just freaked me out too much. It interferred with my dreams too much. This I can't tolerate. Plus, I was hearing crap in my house at 1am while I was reading. Therefore, as great of a book this was, I can't read these others. This story just freaked me out too much! But if your in for blood, guts, gore and just freaky stuff, here is your book!

Not being my first foray into the works of Mr. Kilborn and Mr. Konrath I was moderately prepared for this novel. But not fully. Not in the least. Both men on their own write some of the most disturbing, both psychologically as well as gut wrenching gore. Together, though, they are not for the weak of heart or spirit in any way, shape or form. They start the novel off by saying that even though there are characters from their other novels in the book this is a stand alone book. This is true, to a point. Reading through and meeting each of the characters I found myself wishing I had already read the novels that each one was a part of so that I would know their personal stories. So that I would have a bit of comparison like a sort of before and after. Now, after the fact, I'm going back and reading all those books and will then probably reread this one, just for that purpose. So though it is a stand alone novel I would highly recommend reading the other novels first.

And here I have to give a spoiler alert. I can't talk further without revealing some secrets, so proceed at your own discretion.

The basic story is great! Mad scientist is trying to create a cure for fear. As expected it goes horribly wrong. This is not how the novel is portrayed, which would make people want to read it. Instead it's portrayed, and sort of starts out as a haunted house story. Only thing about that is while you're reading through the build up it keeps going through your head, wondering why a haunted house. As things progress it's made very clear that the house is only important for it's reputation and setting. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to downplay the house but I was actually a bit disappoint when I figured out that it wasn't really haunted.

The characters were well written. Each one seemed to stay true to how they originally envisioned, but this was based off of the small fill in backstory the authors provided. I did enjoy meeting them and going through this journey with them, no matter where it ended up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent

Phew, I'm exhausted from sitting on the edge of my seat and following this harrowing tale - brilliant.

Fabulous writing of a story of terror, where the characters were both believable and realistic, which brought alive the very real fear that can haunt us all.

I've never read anything by this author before, and despite not knowing the back stories of the characters, there was enough detail so that from the first I was invested in their lives.

An excellent read, if you like the psychological stance of horror, where conquering 'fear' is explored, but be warned, there is blood!

    Highly recommended.

Hier kommen viele Charaktere zusammen. Sie sind authentisch und spiegeln wieder was sie vorher erlebt haben. Dazu kommt viel Horror und die Spannung kommt nicht zu kurz. Mehr will ich nicht verraten.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read

I found this fun to read, mostly since I have read 4 of the 6 relevant texts. After reading this I'll be looking to download the remaining two aswell.
To really enjoy and understand this I would say that you would need to have read at least 2 or 3 of the previous works. I don't feel it would work as a standalone, which is why I've rated it a 4*.
I've enjoyed everything I've read by this author. There are a few grammar and editing issues in places, but not enough to detract from the story or to make it an unpleasant read.
It was interesting to be brought back around to so many familiar characters, to be able to see them all in one setting. I think the idea of the book is brilliant.

The content lives up to expectations; is appropriately gory and limit pushing. Not for the faint hearted.
Slow paced to begin with, but becomming more engrossing towards the middle, with maybe a slight rushed feeling by the end.
Perhaps a little cliche at points with the characters, but not in a detrimental way.

I was disappointed when I reached the end, I'd recommend this, but ONLY if you've read the author's background works required for it, without those, or at least some of them, this could be confusing.

I really enjoy reading J A Konrath's books. Always an entertaining read and this book didn't disappoint. It was nice running into characters from previous books and I liked the story the author wrote incorporating them all together.
