The Haunting of Hattie Hastings Part One: A ghostly, gloriously witty feel-good romance with a liberal dose of comedy. Kindle Edition
Some people just won't take death lying down … (NB: cliffhanger ending)
Hattie Hastings is happily married, even if husband Gary drives her up the wall at times. When tragedy strikes, she is left alone and heartbroken, with only an assortment of family and friends to prop her up.
Struggling to cope, she is left reeling when her deceased other half returns, popping up at the most inappropriate times.
Hattie can't convince anyone that Gary is back. Not even best friend Cat – now free from the cruel and controlling Stewart – will believe her.
Why has Gary returned? And what will Cat do when her slimy ex-husband tries to worm his way back into her affections?
The Haunting of Hattie Hastings will make you laugh, cry and count down until Part Two …

About the author

Audrey Davis survived secondary school on the West coast of Scotland. Rubbish at science but not too bad at English, she originally wanted to be an actress but was persuaded that journalism was a safer option. Probably wise. She studied at Napier College in Edinburgh, the only place in Scotland at that time to offer a journalism course.
Her first foray into the hard-nosed newspaper world was as a junior reporter in Dumfriesshire. Duties included interviewing farmers about the prize-winning heifers to reporting on family tragedies. She persuaded her editor to let her launch an entertainment column which meant meeting the odd celebrity – or just the downright odd. From there, she moved to the loftier rank of senior reporter back in her home patch. Slightly more money, fewer farm animals but a higher crime rate. As Taggart would say: 'There's been a murrrrder!'
After a stint in London on a video magazine – yes, she is that old – Audrey moved to Singapore with her fiancé. She tried valiantly to embrace the stinking heat, humidity and lack of jobs, although she did work briefly on a magazine which was banned by the government for 'artistic' use of naked men's bottoms.
Next on her adventures was a land Down Under where her main focus was raising Cost Centre One (aka firstborn) and coming to terms with the imminent arrival of Number Two. Still, she loved the Aussie way of life – BBQs, beaches and bring your own booze to restaurants – so it came as a blow when OH announced a move back to the UK. Not a job between us, the climate a possible deal breaker and an Exorcist-style vomiting infant on the flight home didn't bode well …
Always a survivor, Audrey sought out similar-minded friends (i.e. slightly bonkers), got the children into a good school and thought about taking up writing again. Sadly, thinking about it was as far as she got, unless you count shopping lists. Then, hubby drops another bombshell. Switzerland. As in – it's packing time again. Off to the land of cheese, chocolate, scarily efficient trains and a couple of teeny, tiny issues. Like driving on the 'wrong' side of the road and speaking a foreign language (French). The former was conquered fairly quickly (we'll skip over the wall demolition in week two), the latter remains an ongoing battle of the hopeful against the hopeless. At least she provides amusement for the local workforce.
It wasn't until 2016 that Audrey rediscovered her writing mojo with an on line Writing Fiction course. From there, her first novel – A Clean Sweep – was born, although it took a bit longer than nine months from conception. A short, darker prequel – A Clean Break – followed, and in November 2017 she published the first in a novella trilogy, The Haunting of Hattie Hastings Part One. Parts Two and Three followed, and were combined into a standalone novel which received incredible reviews. Audrey's third novel - A Wish For Jinnie - was published in June 2020, and her fourth – Lost In Translation – in January 2021. A sequel to A Wish For Jinnie – A Wish For Jo – was published in June 2022. The final part of the Cranley Wish trilogy will be published in early 2023.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 15, 2019This is a delightful read that is hilarious, entertaining and quite enjoyable. It is not too short but short enough to read through it quickly and the unfortunate thing about that is you have to wait for the next book! Looking forward to #2!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2017This is a fun shortish read, about Hattie Hastings being haunted by her husband Gary. No it’s not a horror, instead it’s a gentle comedy about the unexpected return of Gary.
The book starts with Gary’s death - I’m not giving anything away by saying this. But just as Hattie is starting to come to terms with her grief, he makes an unexpected return. At first she freaks out, and then finds it strangely comforting. Unfortunately no-one believes her, and she has to try and convince them she’s not going mad.
The trouble really begins when Gary starts appearing in other people’s houses.
This is told from several points of view - Hattie’s, her son’s, and her friends. And Gary’s - and we find out he has a mission. But he doesn’t know what it is.
If you’re in the mood for a light fun read, I highly recommend you give it a go - but it’s not finished - it does end on a cliff-hanger!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I would. I didn't click with the people. But it's very cute idea.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2018A great read, well written and worth the purchase. I look forward to reading all this author's books, very refreshing.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2017This story is humorous, like a funny sitcom. The only thing I didn't like about it is that is ends abruptly. However, I did up my star rating because Author Davis in good faith did disclose that this book is Part One of a series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2018pretty good story. a little different. I need book 2 now.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2017I really enjoyed the book, but there were several pages missing from different chapters. I continued to read even though I missed some important parts of the story.

I’m always a little dubious about books with certain titles and content due to my current health situation but the blurb sells this as a light-hearted story.
The Haunting of Hattie Hastings is quite well written with a definite slant towards humour. There are some great one-liners to raise a smile. It’s only a short novella so can be read in one sitting, beware it does end on a BIG cliff hanger with two further parts to come.
The characters are fairly realistic in the circumstances, son Johnny had to be my favourite, anyone who has experienced a teenager in the house will relate!
Hattie and Cat have that brilliant friendship that only years of knowing each other can bring .. so when Hattie is ‘visited’ by her dead hubby will Cat believe her or think she has gone totally crazy!?
Be prepared to alternate between tears of joy or sadness .. a cute little story to enhance your day. Roll on book two!
Thanks to the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for my copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely an enjoyable read!
I really enjoyed reading the first installment of Hatie's hauntings by her late husband Gary. It was an enjoyable read, funny and witty; and coming from Scotland, I loved some of the expressions and old sayings that I haven't heard for a while, immediately transporting you back in time.
It definitely leaves the reader wanting more and to read on to find out what happens next.
It is easily to relate to all the characters. We all have a friend like Cat, who is unlucky in love, and has a knack of chasing the wrong men.
I found myself "shouting" at Cat "NO" when Stewart comes to visit, when she lets him in and she opens a bottle of wine. It leaves you wondering is she going to fall for his charms again if she is tipsy, and then in the final lines, is Stewart going to blame the wine and Cat being tipsy when she sees Gary. We all know a "twenty something forever teenager" like Hattie's son, that you would like to tell him to grow up, and do something with his life.
Really looking forward to Part Two of The Haunting of Hattie Hastings!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, lighthearted story
This is a fun, lighthearted story with some laugh out loud moments that's easy to get into. The characters' personalities come through immediately, and the bitter-sweet story draws the reader in.
Hattie gets annoyed by her husband, Gary, but she loves him really. A tragic event makes her realise just how much she loves him, and she has problems coming to terms with his death.
But then Gary comes back - the trouble is, only Hattie can see or hear him. Worried friends and family try to help her, thinking grief has overcome her, until...
That cliffhanger definitely leaves the reader wanting more!

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful romp
A wonderful romp through Hattie's life that is both comic and endearingly poignant. Hattie's husband, Gary, love of her life, gets killed in a random hit and run accident and she is left to live life on her own. Although not entirely alone as she has the support of her best friend and members of her disparate but loving family. And then Gary makes himself part of her life again in a totally unexpected way, with surprising results. Part One leaves you wanting more ... Part Two, can't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly, Madly, Deeply in a major key
The Haunting of Hattie Hastings is a Truly, Madly, Deeply for the 2000s, but in a major rather than a minor key. Unusually for a novel which deals with loss, it's a funny, uplifting romp of a book, that still has you caring deeply about its characters - even the flawed ones. I can't wait to get to Part 2 and find out what happens to Hattie, Cat, Johnny and of course the irrepressible Gary, who's returned from the grave (or, as Hattie points out, the incinerator) and now finds himself uncomfortably wedged between one world and the next. Great fun.

1.0 out of 5 stars To be continued
This book finished before the story did! How incredibly annoying. Didn't even wrap up any of the storylines.
A very frustrating waste of time for a b grade story. Won't be buying any more of her books
