His Pretty Little Burden: An Age Gap Mafia Romance (His Pretty Little Collection Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 9,049 ratings

#1 Bestseller in Women’s Crime Fiction.
#1 Bestseller in Organised Crime.

A little deer walks into the wolf’s den.

I want answers.

I know nothing of love, family, or stability, having been raised in the foster system and spat out at eighteen, pregnant, and with no memory of how that came to be.

I try to find my estranged father, a man rumoured to be in the Mafia, hopeful he will use his influence to discover what really happened the night someone took my innocence.

But I don’t find my father. I walk straight into the den of his associate, the Don of the Cosa Nostra.

Clay Butcher.

He is a cold, calculated killer. An emotional island in a perfectly tailored suit.

He orders me to stay in his mansion and wait for my father to return. But living with Clay Butcher stirs feelings deep inside of me. Starved of attention all my life, I find his possessive gaze intoxicating. His rules ground me, his discipline holds me accountable, and his praise sets my skin ablaze.

But he is a liar.

What I don’t know is that he plots to use me. I am not just the daughter of his colleague, but a girl with a powerful heir in her belly.

The heir to part of Clay Butcher's legacy.

Author notes: His Pretty Little Burden is part of The Kids of The District series but can be enjoyed without the previous books, although it follows a greater narrative and is the first book in a duet. It features a powerful Mafia Don and his endearing tortured heroine. His Pretty Little Burden has an age gap dynamic that some people may find uncomfortable. It is an epic romance story, with spice, and dark themes. Enjoy.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ms. Harris's words, her beautiful prose, the power and emotion behind each letter typed... It called to my reader's heart in a way a book hasn't for a while. The story was dark, and it hurt so much. Yet, it was gorgeous in its pain, making me bleed for these characters, making me embrace all of the black and all of the light that was their tale."

"I really have no words, other than, this is so well written. I don't have triggers which is lucky!! I'm rushing off to read the next one!"

"5 heart-wrenching stars, fully deserved for this book."

"Nicci has blown me away with this book! I loved it from the get-go. I love a good age gap, mafia, protective, and good storyline. I love how this was not a typical story. "

"His Pretty Little Burden, the fourth book in the Kids of The District series by Nicci Harris is an age gap mafia romance that is pure perfection! Because honestly? Clay Butcher is everything you could ever want in a domineering, possessive, sexy alpha lead! Dark, charismatic, oh so possessive but oddly gentle in his obsession with his little deer that you can't stop reading their story."

Slow Burn but Oh so worth it
This book is beautifully written, I LOVED IT!!!! TRIGGER WARNINGS, Please read them! This book is dark and not for the faint of heart. The realistic glimpse into the darkness of the foster system seems universal, the book is set in Australia but could just as easily be in the US, UK, anywhere in the world. I LOVE the raw and unapologetic re/telling of Fawn's story. We really get a sense of who Clay Butcher is in this book and the realationship between him and Fawn is perfection. His character evolution as she wiggles into his daily life is sooo... Clay, (stoic, quiet, controlled, dangerous.) This is probably my favorite book in the series just becuase of the dark realities in the pages. Fawn's unwillingness to give up and survive life and Clay's unwillingness to let her JUST survive...*chef's kiss*

How have I missed out on this series?
I love, love, loved this book, and am ready to devour the others now to catch up on lost time!

Ms. Harris's words, her beautiful prose, the power and emotion behind each letter typed... It called to my reader's heart in a way a book hasn't for a while. The story was dark, and it hurt so much. Yet, it was gorgeous in its pain, making me bleed for these characters, making me embrace all of the black and all of the light that was their tale.

Fawn, both full of love and drenched in tragedy, is one of my favorite FMCs this year. Despite it all, she opened herself to Clay, I'd say from the first moment she met him, when she knelt before him without question. Her emotions, both the beautiful and the devastating, were so strong they poured from her uncontrollably, and it endeared me to her so much. I can't wait to see how her strength intensifies.

Oh, Clay... I fell madly in love with him from the very beginning. I was drawn to his possessiveness and protection just as strongly as Fawn was. Who couldn't love a man that would do anything to give you everything, who would burn down the world to keep you safe? Aurora was right... He needed intimacy in his life. He needed the comfort that Fawn gave him. It was a glorious feeling to witness him embrace it.

How did I miss that this was a duet?
That's what I get for pre-ordering based on Bookstagram posts alone, I suppose.

As I watched the time left in book tick down in the bottom corner of my Kindle, my anxiety reached all new levels. I couldn't handle the thought of it ending so abruptly. I needed so much more! Then, I reached the end and saw that there would be a second part of this story. Now, I don't know whether to rejoice or scream in frustration as I impatiently await the rest of Fawn and Clay's epic tale.

This book is a dark, mafia, age-gap romance that is not to be missed! I highly recommend it! All the ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!!

This book was interesting and it took you deep inside the main character’s flaws, emotions, and pasts. It’s a lot. My heart hurt for Fawn. She had an awful childhood and no one looked after her. How she still existed as a respectful and beautiful person was shocking. She had been given the worst stepmother, stepbrothers, and Benji. Oh my goodness, Benji took advantage of Fawn’s feelings and naivety in the cruelest of ways. I enjoyed Sir aka The Mayor aka Clay. He is one alpha, force of nature, dark and delicious tall glass of water. It was enjoyable to read about Clay, how he leads his family, and runs his organization. He demands control in all things. Clay too has his own baggage that he carries at all times. Be sure to read to the very end of the book as the author threw in a special treat chapter with a brief history of Jimmy and Dustin and why they originally reached out to Mr. Luca Butcher. Read On!

I don’t know where to start. Each book, somehow, is better than the last. I gobbled this book up SO FAST, I don’t know what hit me.
This story followed Clay and Fawn. Two very different people on the surface but fighting some of the same demons on the inside. Nicci Harris is a MASTER at making things/people/situations go together that you’d never believe could go together seem like it’s an everyday thing.
We finally get more on the head of the Butcher family, the one almost a decade older than his brothers, who felt he let them down and didn’t know how to be closer to them. If he truly fit in. Broke my heart all he does to keep them safe with a sense of safety to boot. He CAN’T unwind, let his guard down, stop thinking 2 steps ahead because there is ALWAYS someone waiting in the wings to take him or his family out. He has to have iron control. His marriage of convenience is also business he is surrounded by his army, where he’s comfortable and rarely his family.
In comes Fawn. Oh Fawn. One of THE TOP FIVE heroines of all time for me. Not because she’s a bad arse fighter, a bombshell, a brainiac, a bäll buster or a push over. Nope, it’s her heart and resilience my oh MY her resilience. I felt her to my bones. I saw so much of me in her at times it was scary. My heart still hurts right now as I write. The tears haven’t gone long from my face and ready to make a reappearance as I remember what this girl is gone through. The TRIGGER WARNINGS ARE REAL. Maybe the realist I’ve seen so far. Please do NOT take them lightly. I’ve never experienced what she experiences in this book and it still ripped my heart out. I bawled and bawled and had to take an hour break. 😮‍💨☹️Rhia gutted me.
These two come together and slowly help each other open up and realize they need more, can BE more and the story takes off from there. Again, I WILL be buying the physical book series I love it that much.
Of course I listened and read / I even went as far as using my AirPods in between sitting down to read and driving my car it was so good! Shane East and Sofia Lette both did amazing of course. Those Australian accents gave the story that much more umph.
All in all, a book that will stick with me forever. Period. I’m praying their 2nd book is just as good so heading there now to start…even though it’s already past my bedtime. 😬😂🤣🥳

Starting off with what I loved. The story line itself is amazing. Our girl really goes through it and it’s traumatic and the love story woven into it is just amazing! I loved the characters and their story lines. What I didn’t like was the editing was not very good with this book. Also along with the editing I do feel like I was missing something the entire time… like there was stuff I should have already known but it doesn’t say it’s a series book… so there’s that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable romance for fans of great crime fiction, w/ epic love story for the ages at its heart.
Reviewed in Australia on May 7, 2023
Where do I start…this book…my goodness! Quite simply: This is a masterpiece of epic proportions:

I absolutely loved His Pretty Little Burden by Nicci Harris. This book has it all: passion, suspense, drama, and an unforgettable love story between a powerful crime boss of the Cosa Nostra: Clay Butcher, and his endearing sweet heroine, Fawn Harlow.

I adore Nicci and her writing style is incredible, and she creates a world full of danger and intrigue that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Fawn is a sweet and innocent orphaned young woman who is pregnant and alone. Clay is a formidable figure in the world of organised crime, but also the Mayor of The District in Australia, when Fawn shows up at his door seeking protection, he can't help but feel drawn to her. Despite the age gap and the dangers that surround them, their chemistry is undeniable, and their romance is nothing short of epic.

The characters in this book are so well-developed that you feel like you know them personally. Fawn is a relatable and endearing character, and Clay is the perfect alpha male with a soft spot for his affectionately called: “Little Deer” – his pretty little burden. Their love story is intense and emotional, and I found myself cheering for them from the very beginning.

The steamy scenes in this book are hot and steamy, and the violence and drama only add to the
    suspenseful nature of the story.

This is one of the hottest Age-Gap dynamic I’ve read in a long-time and I do read a ton of them, and I love them especially the Sir/Sub - not so much the Daddy aspect and that is another reason why I Love Nicci - she totally gets the importance of the distinction.
Whilst this may make some feel uncomfortable, it really shouldn’t because although Sir Clay holds the power, and comes across as very controlling, it’s coming from a protective and caring place – he wants to give her everything she never had and more – he wants to empower her, he constantly encourages her to use her voice and he always praises her and absolutely worships her – he loves all of her, and is accepting to care for not only her, but her unborn child – fathered by another - Clay Butcher is a massive swoon-fest – the powerful mafia Don who wants nothing but to love this sweet little deer.

Being Mafia, this is quite dark as is the nature of organised crime – it there is violence, and drams and with that comes gore so you need to be prepared for that and please do check your triggers.

This duet narration, featuring the fan-favourite Brit voice actor Shane East's outstanding Australian accent and Sofia Lette's endearing portrayal of the tortured little heroine, further elevates this incredible love story. The performances are truly exceptional, With Shane East's incredible & authentic Australian accent capturing the essence and vibe of the formidable, Australian Mafia Don: Clay Butcher and Sofia Lette's captivating portrayal of the endearing Fawn Harlow, the duet narration delivers an unparalleled and mind-blowing performance that immerses listeners in the story. This story showcases the remarkable talent of both Shane and Sofia and the chemistry between them is palpable, enhancing the intensity and authenticity of the story. Their duet narration is a true standout, demonstrating their incredible skill and chemistry as voice actors and brings the characters to life in a way that feels intimate and immersive. The production quality of this audiobook is unparalleled, capturing the essence of the story and making listeners feel like they are right there in the room with the characters. It is a testament to the talent and dedication of the voice actors and the production team.

Overall, His Pretty Little Burden is an unforgettable romance that I would recommend to anyone who loves a good crime fiction story with a passionate love story at its heart. This book is a must-read, and I give it five Pretty Little Stars without hesitation!
