His Pretty Little Burden: An Age Gap Mafia Romance (Kids of The District Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 7,172 ratings

#1 Bestseller in Women’s Crime Fiction.
#1 Bestseller in Organised Crime.

A little deer walks into the wolf’s den.

I want answers.

I know nothing of love, family, or stability, having been raised in the foster system and spat out at eighteen, pregnant, and with no memory of how that came to be.

I try to find my estranged father, a man rumoured to be in the Mafia, hopeful he will use his influence to discover what really happened the night someone took my innocence.

But I don’t find my father. I walk straight into the den of his associate, the Don of the Cosa Nostra.

Clay Butcher.

He is a cold, calculated killer. An emotional island in a perfectly tailored suit.

He orders me to stay in his mansion and wait for my father to return. But living with Clay Butcher stirs feelings deep inside of me. Starved of attention all my life, I find his possessive gaze intoxicating. His rules ground me, his discipline holds me accountable, and his praise sets my skin ablaze.

But he is a liar.

What I don’t know is that he plots to use me. I am not just the daughter of his colleague, but a girl with a powerful heir in her belly.

The heir to part of Clay Butcher's legacy.

Author notes: His Pretty Little Burden is part of The Kids of The District series but can be enjoyed without the previous books, although it follows a greater narrative and is the first book in a duet. It features a powerful Mafia Don and his endearing tortured heroine. His Pretty Little Burden has an age gap dynamic that some people may find uncomfortable. It is an epic romance story, with spice, and dark themes. Enjoy.

Review

"Ms. Harris's words, her beautiful prose, the power and emotion behind each letter typed... It called to my reader's heart in a way a book hasn't for a while. The story was dark, and it hurt so much. Yet, it was gorgeous in its pain, making me bleed for these characters, making me embrace all of the black and all of the light that was their tale."

"I really have no words, other than, this is so well written. I don't have triggers which is lucky!! I'm rushing off to read the next one!"

"5 heart-wrenching stars, fully deserved for this book."

"Nicci has blown me away with this book! I loved it from the get-go. I love a good age gap, mafia, protective, and good storyline. I love how this was not a typical story. "

"His Pretty Little Burden, the fourth book in the Kids of The District series by Nicci Harris is an age gap mafia romance that is pure perfection! Because honestly? Clay Butcher is everything you could ever want in a domineering, possessive, sexy alpha lead! Dark, charismatic, oh so possessive but oddly gentle in his obsession with his little deer that you can't stop reading their story."

This book is beautifully written, I LOVED IT!!!! TRIGGER WARNINGS, Please read them! This book is dark and not for the faint of heart. The realistic glimpse into the darkness of the foster system seems universal, the book is set in Australia but could just as easily be in the US, UK, anywhere in the world. I LOVE the raw and unapologetic re/telling of Fawn's story. We really get a sense of who Clay Butcher is in this book and the realationship between him and Fawn is perfection. His character evolution as she wiggles into his daily life is sooo... Clay, (stoic, quiet, controlled, dangerous.) This is probably my favorite book in the series just becuase of the dark realities in the pages. Fawn's unwillingness to give up and survive life and Clay's unwillingness to let her JUST survive...*chef's kiss*

A story at its core about family. It’s also a romance, a mafia tale, erotic and gruesome. It’s all here and if there are warnings, heed them. The SA in this book is very detailed and could certainly trigger someone.

Fawn & Clay are an unlikely match, but they certainly know how to light a fire and keep it hot. She’s looking to be chosen, to belong and ultimately loved. Family isn’t something she knows a lot about at 18, but she has an idea.

“For the past eighteen years, I have scratched at the surface of what a family looks like. I've ripped my nails from their beds trying to get to the core of it. Feel it. It's more than dinners and movies and conversations. More than sharing a space. It's effortless togetherness. Laughter on a hammock. Cradling your wife. Dancing. It's in the resting smile…” (Fawn)

Clay is head of the Cosa Nostra in Australia and married for business but not for romance nor physical intimacy. His wife Aurora is mafia royalty, but she wasn’t groomed to lead. Family is the reason Clay leads. His brothers and their families are why he builds the businesses and continues as the Mayor. When Fawn arrives, he sees revenge and a pretty little burden to play with as he pleases.

It’s intense but oh so good. The heat is scorching and you might find yourself needing more breaks than you thought. Great book & I’m ready for His Pretty Little Queen next.

This book was interesting and it took you deep inside the main character’s flaws, emotions, and pasts. It’s a lot. My heart hurt for Fawn. She had an awful childhood and no one looked after her. How she still existed as a respectful and beautiful person was shocking. She had been given the worst stepmother, stepbrothers, and Benji. Oh my goodness, Benji took advantage of Fawn’s feelings and naivety in the cruelest of ways. I enjoyed Sir aka The Mayor aka Clay. He is one alpha, force of nature, dark and delicious tall glass of water. It was enjoyable to read about Clay, how he leads his family, and runs his organization. He demands control in all things. Clay too has his own baggage that he carries at all times. Be sure to read to the very end of the book as the author threw in a special treat chapter with a brief history of Jimmy and Dustin and why they originally reached out to Mr. Luca Butcher. Read On!

this is the best smut plot book i’ve ever read like seriously. just read it. i know people are saying age gap blah blah blah but there is SOOO much more to it than that. for a author to make me fall in love with both characters that are so complex and interesting and omg the trauma and the insecurity and the hurt. fawn makes my heart bleed and clay aka sir makes my heart melt for her because he’s everything she needs and HE SEES HER. to be loved is to be seen and he see’s her ! HUGE TW warning and i dont say that lightly. it is not for the faint of heart. i hate reading subjects like tht but for the plot to understand fawn. i get why the author included it. first nicci harris book now i will be going on a reading rampage of her books because if she can create this beutiful love story i can’t wait to read what else she can create!!!

I don’t know how to feel about this one. I maybe should sit with my feelings a bit but I think I’ll forget what I read.

I didn’t hate the book nor did I dislike it necessarily. I just didn’t feel like the love story was believable to me. I wasn’t convinced that what Clay and Fawn begin to share in this book was anything but predatory. There is a second part to their story and I can’t say I’m interested in following up.

There’s a lot of strong, explicit adult content including gRape I don’t remember seeing any content warnings (I’ll have to go back and look) but there should be.

I don’t know… this story just didn’t do what I thought it would. The idea was great the execution of it didn’t deliver for me.

This isn't your typical Mafia, age-gap story! The vulnerability of Clay and Fawn in their individual beings, the innate power they each hold, the way 2 souls inherently recognize each other whether or not the brain and heart want to accept it - all make this an exceptionally well-written story that keeps the reader enraptured. I only hope the continuation is everything I need it to be.

Love this series! Always have the intrigue, mystery, and hot spicy scenes here. Even though it is classified as an age gap this book didn’t emphasize how old the male character.

This book was really good! I only bought this one first to try out and see if I'd like it enough to continue the series, and I do! I do wish Fawn was a little older, though, because to me, 18 is still a baby. I just try my best to omit that from my mind while reading. The author makes it a little difficult because she does such an awesome job giving the characters their voices. The story definitely didn't go like I thought it was going to and had kept me up late reading because I had to know what happened. I recommend this book, It was my first mafia trope, and I look forward to the rest of the series!

Continuing this series, this is Fawn and Clay’s story. Two very damaged people. Fawn is young, pregnant and looking for her father. She meets Clay at Jimmy’s house. Clay is hard and mean, detached, doesn’t trust anyone, least of all this young naive little girl. He lets her stay because she is useful to him. They dance around each other, keeping things from each other, but eventually they get closer and trust builds between them. It’s a heart wrenching story, filled with revelations. Their HEA is there in the end but this is part of a duet so their story continues in the next book.
