Monsters exist.

Linguist Andy Dennison-Jones knows this all too well. He and his veterinarian wife, Sun, have been chased by them before, and barely escaped from a secret underground government facility with their lives.

Now they once again find themselves trapped alongside a collection of creatures straight out of hell. Fighting with them is an unlikely group of misfits, including a misplaced British kid, a former spec-ops soldiers, and a strange Irishman who might be the oldest living thing on earth—if he's even alive at all.

Filled with the kind of slam-bang action, wicked scares, and sly humor that have earned J.A. Konrath and Iain Rob Wright millions of fans, HOLES IN THE GROUND is both a collaboration and a continuation of both authors' previous work (ORIGIN by Konrath and FINAL WINTER by Wright) but also serves as a perfect introduction to their universes.
The devil you know is just as bad as the devil you don't...

The long promised sequel to Origin has finally arrived! I was sceptical when I saw it was a collaboration with another author, but Holes in the Ground still feels like a Konrath novel, much to my delight. Sorry for doubting you Mr. Wright; you've done a bang-up job!

In the introduction Konrath likens the two books to the difference between Alien and its sequel Aliens, and I totally agree. The stakes are raised exponentially and our heroes have much more to deal with than just one giant demon. The last third of the book is nonstop action with as much blood, grue, and severed body parts as you could ever want. Fans of Origin will love this, and lovers of action-oriented horror who haven't yet discovered them should buy both books. Five stars!

Ok..... Let me start by saying that I am a huge fan of Mr. Konrath. I have also recently been following Mr. Wright because when I found out that 'Holes in the Ground' was going to have characters from Iain's The Final Winter', I couldn't exactly start the sequel without some good character references. I have to say that I loved 'The Final Winter' and went out and grabbed all of Iain's books (btw.... He is such a cool guy that you can ask him for an ebook that you are missing and he'll send it to you for free).

All that being said, the only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I still preferred 'Origin'. However, this was a close second. It starts off a little slowly but once our heroes, (Andy, Sun, and Jerry) get to the new facility, the story just takes off. You get action, horror, comedy, and fun all in one novel. What more can a gal ask for? You definitely need to pick this one up if you enjoyed 'Origin' as it has the same tone as the first. And, if you have yet to read Iain's books.... What are you waiting for?

Beyond my wildest imagination. The reworked version was better as more finely detailed, although I read the original as well. While I was not contemplating some of the concepts presented, I was busy trying to rush the characters to some sort of safety. This book is incredibly good

What a ride. J. A. Konrath has created another gem with some much loved characters. 'Holes in the Ground' takes places not long after 'Origin' left off. Andrew Dennison and Sun Jones are finally happy, having married just 24 hours earlier. They begin their new life on a romantic honeymoon, blissfully unaware that one knock on their door is about to change everything. Whisked away by the Secret Service, by order of the President, Mr. and Mrs. Dennison-Jones are brought to the Spiral, a secret underground facility purpose built to house the stuff of nightmares. This macabre zoo of vampires, werewolves and giant arachnids would be bad enough, if not for Bub. The mastermind of evil is back and still hell bent on wiping out the human race and enslaving the rest of man kind.
Antiheroes Andy and Sun are joined by a group of misfits as they fight to stop Bub, survive the many evil monsters trying to kill them and leave the Spiral before they're all buried alive and hell of Earth begins.

An enjoyable read, fast-paced and witty as hell. No pun intended.

Two of my go to authors when I want something dark that makes me squirm while reading have come together with a thrilling new story. I enjoyed The Final Winter by Iain and Origin by Konrath. Now they’ve teamed up and written the sequel to Origin, including character’s from both of the books.

Imagine a secret society who’s sole purpose is to protect mankind from things that go bump in the night. Things we believe exist only in our imagination. Deep below ground there are creatures beyond imaging. Locked up in a facility. They believe this time they’ve covered all the bases. No way can what happened at Samhain happen again.

So, with that thought, things do go wrong, horribly wrong. It’s monsters on a grand scale. Some you’ll recognize, some are straight out of nightmares. There were a couple I just couldn’t picture. So bizarre. And once monstergeddon begins, it’s a massacre.

I really liked some of the character’s. A husband and wife team from the previous book, Origin, are recruited to try to find out what one of the most dangerous denizens is up to. Some honeymoon they’re having. And the young man that accidentally got himself invited along had no idea what he was in for. Most of the scientists, security and staff I figured to be monster chum. One soldier had potential to be a good guy. And Wolfie. I liked Wolfie. Might not have if I actually saw it up close. It’s not what you’re thinking it is. And one so called monster that looks like an ordinary man, first appearing in The Final Winter, remains a mystery as to his intent til right at the end.

Once the killing starts there’s no slowing down with this one. It’s bloody death on every level of the facility. Even monsters killing monsters. No one is spared. Kind of reminded me of a scene from Cabin In The Woods. And there’s this wild twist that still has me reeling.

You actually get two versions of this book. Iain Rob Wright explains how he came to write the sequel to Origin with J.A. Konrath.. You get the final version from both authors and the first one written by Iain. The authors put their heads together and give you Holes In The Ground in all its bloody glory.

Monster lovers and fans of these two authors, you don’t want to miss this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sequel that's better than the first installment?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 5, 2014
OK so J A Konrath is one of my fav authors. Iain Rob Wright is one of my fav authors.

Konrath's "Origin" is one of my fav books so when it came to pass a sequel was being written and it was a collaboration with Iain Rob Wright......well I just couldn't wait for it.........I have not been disappointed. This book is just superb!!!!!!!!!

The original "Origin" is set in a secret underground facility in America where a dark secret has been kept hidden for years to be studied to try and find the secrets it holds. The main characters in it are Andy and Sun, a linguist and a vet. Without giving too much away things don't really go as planned and disaster strikes with the facility being destroyed and the dark secret "Bub" escaping.

"Holes In The Ground" is the long awaited sequel. Originally written by Wright and tweaked by Konrath this book is immense. I want to tell you so much about the plot but can't in case I give too much away. The central characters are once again Andy and Sun battling against the evil Bub, but in this book they have help from a few characters from one of the best books Iain Rob Wright has ever written, "The Final Winter". The fantastic Lucas and the somewhat annoying Jerry (definitely not annoying in this book).

There are a few things that both authors have in common. They write horror fantastically well. They add humour to their stories which is both dry, black and extremely funny at times but used in a way that is scary at the same time.

This book is 100MPH from the outset. It's scary, it's gory and it's funny but most of all it's one you won't want to put down once you start it. Do yourself a favour and buy the original "Origin" if you haven't already read it, then throw a sickie and read "Holes In The Ground" straight away. You will not regret it.

    What a bloody brilliant read!!!

as monster stories go its pretty good, lots of gore, not my favourite konrath book but not bad either.at the conclusion it leaves the door open for another????

3.0 out of 5 stars Same Story, Different Day
Reviewed in Japan on January 10, 2015
A collaboration with my two favorite authors and I just knew I had to get this book. I very much enjoyed the prequel "Origin" and anticipate the sequel.

To cut it short, I felt it was just the same story as the first one with new characters. The main characters Andy and Sun, are thrown into another secret underground facility to determine the origins of the batlings along with a mysterious fellow, Lucas. Along in tow is Jerry, a misguided youth for them to take care of.

The story was fast paced and kept the action going. However, I felt there was nothing original from the first story and it is just basically the same story again. The two authors wrote their own versions of the story with some changes especially in the ending, so the reader is reading the same story twice in a book. The most interesting character there was Lucas and I felt he was the only one who added depth in the story. The addition of Jerry was unneeded and didn't really add anything for the storyline.

Overall, it was a nice read but nothing original or different from the first book.

    Rating - 3 and a half stars

I must say this is my kind of read, weird out of this word creatures. I found the story too short though and was disappointed when it ended and the story stated again, written in a slightly different style.
I would have preferred one longer story by one author.
