When two kings disagreed, the outcome was war.

King Edward III of England and King Philip VI of France dragged allies from across Europe into their fight for the throne of France.

The Hundred Years War shattered economies and lives, creating heroes and villains whilst shaping the identity of both nations.

It was a war so desperate that the English pawned the crown jewels while the French virtually bankrupted themselves to pay a king’s ransom.

Featuring revolts, murders, famines, crusades, royal intrigues and much more, Dan Moorhouse goes beyond the big battles to tell the tale of these tumultuous times.

In 'On This Day in the Hundred Years War' historian Dan Moorhouse uses contemporary evidence to bring to life the events of the period. Famous battles and personalities feature alongside revolts, assassinations, plots, everyday life plus even the Crown Jewels of England being handed over to moneylenders. By utilising this format of an event linked to each day of the year an interesting overview of the period is provided. Being bitesized in nature makes it readily accessible while still offering a different perspective for the more knowledgeable reader.

On This Day in the Hundred Years War is, like its predecessor On This Day in the Wars of the Roses, a blend of history and trivia, taking a day-by-day look at an assortment of people, places, and events.

I’ll be perfectly honest, my knowledge of The Hundred Years War comes primarily from watching Henry V with Kenneth Branagh, and we know how historically accurate Shakespeare is! So when I finished this book, I was left with a good overview and a much better understanding of this intermittent, century-long conflict involving France and England, conflicts that shattered lives and economies, and in many ways laid the groundwork for the English dynastic conflicts of the late 15th century.

The author makes use of contemporary evidence that he quotes from extensively, helping to bring events, battles, and personalities to life. Along the way, we learn about plots, counter plots, assassinations, the pawning of England’s Crown Jewels (someone has to pay the bill for all this fighting), along with the ordinary people whose lives were impacted by this seemingly never ending series of conflicts.

Just as I did with the other book, I took a look at what happened on my birth date, and it turns out I share my birth date with tax riots in Arras. Hey, that’s okay by me, because let’s face it – who likes taxes anyway?

If you’re interested in this time period. On This Day in the Hundred Years War will make an excellent addition to your library.
