Editorial Reviews
Review
I like how the author combined fictional characters with relatable, heartwarming human characters, great combination.
There are definitely some twists and turns that I did not see coming. I'm ready for book two now!
From the Author
Q. Where did you get the idea for Edelaine's Folly?
A.From a lot of sources actually! When my son was younger, we used to make up stories on the fly, just coming up with stuff as we went. Eventually, it took on a life of its own and I turned some of those ideas into the world of Idoramin, and Edelaine's Folly.
Q. What are you working on now?
A. It's a secret...shh!! Kidding! I am in the final stages of Book Two of the Idoramin Chronicles, and people who follow me over on Facebook, Twitter, or on my blog will be getting some glimpses of that very soon.
Q. Do you have anything else in the works?
A. Always! :) Actually, I have something that fans of the Idoramin Chronicles may love... but I'm not giving away all the details on that just yet. Suffice it to say, those who are privy to getting a sneak peak are going to be able to dive even deeper into the world of Idoramin AND the lives of the people along their journey.
Q. What would you say is the best thing about being a writer & how did you get started?
A. Oh, gosh, I could talk on this for ages - you might not want to get me started! I dreamed as a wee little gal of being a writer someday. In fact, one of the first books that inspired me to want to be a writer, E.B. White's Trumpet of the Swan, which I read when I was... 6 or 7, I still have my original 1970's copy. It's dog-eared and a bit worse for wear over the years, but it was the beginning for me.
Q. So, give us a hint... when can we expect more from Idoramin... when's that Book Two going to be in our hands?
A. I don't have a set-in-stone date for you, but I expect if you'd like to give it to your sweetheart who loves to read, it would make for a great Valentine's Day gift. Probably. ;)

- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2018Cali is a resourceful, clever girl who lives a carefree farm life in Edelaine with her loving parents Bethal and Erwin. Everything changes when a yet unknown evil unexpectedly swoops in and leaves death and destruction in its wake. Cali is understandably devastated, but she quickly finds there’s no time to dwell on her losses. She jumps into action and claims her destiny and the family legacy she never knew she had.
Edelaine’s Folly, Book One is a wonderful, action-packed adventure for youngsters as well as adults. I was initially drawn to this book because of the gorgeous, colorful cover and I’m glad I decided to download it.
The book started ever so slightly slow and I wondered where the author was planning to take the story. However, I realized that this was her way of laying the groundwork for what was to come. I feel it was a clever way to fully introduce readers to the character of Cali and the land of Edelaine.
As I’ve said many times before in my book reviews, I LOVE books that place female characters in strong, important roles and Edelaine’s Folly definitely does this. This series is an excellent way to encourage young girls to begin reading fantasy books. Although the main protagonist is female, I genuinely feel that boys will enjoy reading this book as well. There’s plenty of action, adventure and strong supporting male characters here too.
This is definitely a series worth getting into and I intend to continue reading on!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2018I was riveted to this tale, one I see as Epic-Fantasy, not necessarily for youth, rather for any fan of RA Salvatore, Raymond Feist, or Robert Jordan. The scope is epic, the world building original and free of overused tropes.
Cali's story is wrought with tragedy, yet this young woman stands tall for her people in the face of terror. Her friends compliment Cali well, and together an unlikely band of heroes emerge.
I love how Shaw evokes a rich history, replete with lore, prophecies, and magic.
This novel does indeed set a well-developed foundation for the rest of the series, but the groundwork is excellently done, depicting the necessities and realities of farmstead community life. These good people come together, support and care for one another. In a world rapidly changing, creatures loose in the forest, and the onset of a fifteen year winter, these are the folks I would want to have my back.
I cannot tell you why, but I so worried near the end. I became invested in Edelaine's people - I care for them!
My favorite character was Jorah, a young swordsman, and one of Cali's closest allies.
I would recommend this series to any fan of well crafted, original Fantasy!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2018This fun "cozy epic adventure" is in the tradition of The Hobbit and Brian Jacques' Redwall series. The focus is on friendship and developing strengths and maturity, even in the face of fear and danger.
The friendships that Cali forms are really compelling. I loved her relationship with Sarah in particular -- how the two of them have different strengths and support each other and are also so grateful for each other. I also enjoyed the new friends Cali meets through Eaparius: characters who each have different strengths and who also each face prejudice.
In addition, Cali's reluctant leadership was endearing. I liked watching as she learns to trust herself more throughout the story. And how even seasoned toughies like Bodric respect her. She doesn't seek out violence or revenge, yet she is committed to defending her home and her friends. I like that she tries to solve problems by planning ahead and utilizing the strengths of those around her. I think that is the kind of leadership style that many parents and educators would love kids to witness!
This is a great book to curl up with. I love that any problem seems less scary when faced with good friends and a fresh pot of tea. (I think I gained a few pounds while reading because I kept wanting to feast whenever the characters were!)
A great read for middle grades. A bit young for teens / YA. The pacing could have been a bit faster, but I think a lot of the groundwork was being laid to continue the series. And we definitely had time to connect with key characters and get to know them, so overall, a fair trade-off.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021I read the last two books in this series before I came back to start from the beginning. So my perspective is different in that it was like stepping into the history of characters who had already become friends. But I soon found myself caught up in that history and thoroughly enjoying the ride. Even though I've seen the end, reading about Edelaine and experiencing the journey of the younger characters is still a treat. And now, on to book two.

Edelaine’s Folly is a good start to an epic fantasy journey. Callera (Cali) Flynn is thrown into adulthood when tragedy, so to speak, strikes her peaceful farming community.
What I loved/liked about this story: the magic system Shaw is developing in this first book. Cali’s ‘Time strung’ bow and her bracers – great stuff there. Chase the fox was a nice touch. I also liked the overall plot and thought the book ended well – I didn’t feel cheated.
What I thought could be strengthened: in general, I felt many of the characters, with the exception of Bodric, Eaparius, and a trio met later in the book, had the same ‘voice’, especially the teenagers whose dialogue and reactions to what they endured I didn’t find believable.
Overall, this is a good read and I could see the younger end of the YA spectrum gobbling it up.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2018Great! Awesome! And many other wonderful adjectives. Fantasy is not my thing. That being said, I read the book simply because it was a fellow author I wanted to support. I enjoyed the mix of fantasy and human characters that drew me into their world. My daughter is the fantasy reader, so I passed the book over to her and she finished it in 2 days, giving it this 5-star review. Since she is a young adult, I think her opinion means the most. Great job Morigan - she is definitely looking forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice well-written read.
I've just finished reading this book. As I'm in writing groups with this author, I didn't tell her that I would be reading and providing an honest review. I wanted to give this book 4.5 stars but Amazon doesn't allow this.
The story is a nice story with twists and turns which surprise me, an avid reader, and I did want to read more. The only tiny thing that I have negative to say is the unusual word usage in certain parts. Not a dialect thing but just unusual. Hardly a big issue and certainly doesn't take away from the story at all. Just me being me. Plus, for the genre, it does feel a little short but thankfully there are three books 😊
Well done to the writer and will certainly be reading the rest of the series.
