Infernal Magic (Shadows & Flame Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,089 ratings

She's forgotten her past. Too bad her past won't return the favor.

Ursula can't remember a single thing from before three years ago, so she has to keep her life simple. All she wants is to earn enough money for rent--and maybe a bit left over for a new pair of boots.

But on her eighteenth birthday, all hell breaks loose... quite literally... when a hellhound shifter shows up in her kitchen. Kester's lethally gorgeous, and he's come with a terrifying message: Ursula owes her soul to a demon.

No one seems to care that she doesn't remember striking that deal.

Thrust into the middle of a war between the gods of fire and night, Ursula fights her way across New York--and through the fae realm--to survive. Along the way, she must reclaim her magical knowledge and her long-forgotten skills with the blade if she wants to escape eternal damnation.

Wow I am completely shell shocked by how fun this book was to read. If you like the paranormal and fantasy genre you just might love this book.

Ursula was an easy character to like, she had a lot of logic to her, and despite her selective amnesia she still manages to believe there is hope even when it seems that she gets put in a tough situation; all at the same time she is a very strong individual, and smart as well. Ursula has a completely no nonsense attitude and for that reason I find myself able to like her very easily.

I can't help but think Kester and other characters know something about her past that they aren't telling. It seems that Ursula's selective amnesia may have a story behind it. I can't wait to find out what it is.

This book does have some violence in it of coarse because of the hellhounds, vampires, incubus, and fae all in a struggle for what seems to be power, or for some souls.

Three years ago, Ursula found herself in the middle of a burned ruin, the note in her pocket the only clue to a past she cannot remember.
On the night of her eighteenth birthday, she faces off with a hellhound, one who is determined to collect her soul in service to a goddess she doesn’t remember pledging herself to.
Suddenly Ursula finds herself dealing with magic, and magical beings. She’s relearning skills she didn’t even know she possessed, and trying her hardest to live in a world ruled by beings far more powerful than she, and working with rules she has no idea exist.

This is the first book in the Demons of Fire and Night series, and it ends not in a cliffhanger, but definitely on unfinished business.
Ursula is tough, but she’s only eighteen- the skills and knowledge she needs to survive are buried deep in her mind. She’s also scrappy, and that’s really all it takes for her to make waves!
Because of her retrograde amnesia, she’s also as confused as we are; the reader is actually lead to experience that same confusion and lack of knowledge that she does, which makes for an interesting way enjoy the book.
It can be a little confusing, but as Ursula learns more, so do we, and it’s an enjoyable journey.

This is an entertaining urban fantasy, with an intriguing and mysterious background plot, and some fascinating characters. Recommended for UF fans, and C.N. Crawford fans.

This series starts very promising. It's very easy to identify with the main character, Ursula, who is thrown head first into a world she doesn't know, nor does she care to, full of incubi, gods, hellhounds and fae. She is both cool, with her mysterious powers and sword skills, and endearingly clumsy, often misstepping when trying to say the right thing at the right tone.

Like all of Crawford's books, this one is full of humor accompanying the drama, and I found myself laughing out loud more than once. Some of the side characters are fantastic as well, and there's a hair designer that I simply adored.

A very enjoyable read, and highly recommended

I like how unique it was by basically throwing you into the mix of confusion, much like the main character was experiencing. Little by little you figure things out and I love that despite her humble start, she gets more bad a** over time. Definitely reading the next one.

The story is intriguing, but has a choppy feel to it. Ursula has a backstory of showing up in a burning church at 15 yrs old, full amnesia, but has some skill sets. She plays piano, yet has no people skills. She gets bounced from foster home to on her own at 17, and has an ex as her boss. She gets fired on her 18th bday, and it goes downhill from there. She has otro skills and can attract demons. Hellhounds, demons, gods, fae, vamps. Basically the book covers a few days and she is no closer to figuring out who she is. She definitely gets allies hurt.

This book must have been one of her first. It took a while to develop the character. It seemed as if she were trying to introduce too many characters and the world in which they lived. Having read later books from this author, this seems like the case. As a result, had this been the first book I had read from this author, I might not have read another book. However, I will read the remaining books in this series to have a greater grasp of the world that the author is introducing me to.

A young amnesiac barmaid confronts a hellhound on her 18th birthday and the consequences are far flung. When she subsequently becomes indentured to a wrathful goddess of fire, she enters a world of supernatural beings in a fight for souls that feed their gods. She now needs to figure out who she was before she lost her memories. Flashes of past memories begin to flare, and they are troubling. Questions abound, like who taught her how to wield a sword so well, why is she immune to so many supernatural powers, and why are the gods so interested in her? One of the gods knows but won’t tell, others don’t care and just want to kill her. Follow as she begins her new life and gets tossed head first into this dangerous world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling start to this series
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2018
Ursula's life is not great. She has no career, no money, a sucky job working for her condescending ex-boyfriend and to top it all off, no memories of her life from before 3 years ago. She has no idea who she is or even if she has any family. Her 18th birthday arrives and with it, so do some major changes to her life.

A shapeshifting hellhound appears in her kitchen demanding her soul, an agreement she made apparently before her memory loss. The only thing she can do before he takes her against her will is ask for a trial as written on a scrap piece of paper that she presumes her former self wrote. This trial awakens skills and powers she had no idea she had and soon Ursula is thrust into a world, completely nothing like her old one, but not necessarily for the better. She has to now become a hellhound herself, claiming the souls of those who have pledged them to Emerazel, a fire demon goddess. Not an easy task for Ursula and not one she wants to do, but she has no choice in the matter. It's either do the job or die!

On her very first job, things go incredibly wrong and trigger a series of dangerous events. Ursula has to rely on her own magic, which she has no control over yet, and the strengths and skills of her comrades and enemies to complete it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book; it was a great start to this series and one I know I will love. Ursula was a great character. She started off as quite pitiful with no hopes for the future. Being thrown in at the deep end into a scary new world, she has to rely on her instincts and surprises herself (and me) with the things she can do but didn't know she could do. This new world is very much a solitary one - everyone is out for themselves and although people do rally together at times of need, Ursula has to depend only on herself to keep herself alive. I have a feeling she will develop into a very strong skilled female lead!

I realized that there were other C.N’s serie that I hadn’t read and the best is all - complete ones. And I came across this one…thanks to the gods. It’s great since from the very beginning and the characters are all involved in a mistery. It’s a pleasure to be introduced to Ursula, Kester, Zee, and all their nemesis.

I've give it four because I'm interested to see where it will go in the next book. Sometimes the first book's great and then the next one isn't. So I might change it to five after I've read the next installment. It was a good read lots of questions to be answered in next book hopefully.
