- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2019Not really sure about this book. For most of it I admit I would skip a lot of parts describing the countless panic attacks. The story in all was good and well worth reading over all.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025Harriet was trapped in a very abusive marriage. She finally got the courage to leave him. I thought the characters were great. Seemed so real. Lots of twists and turns.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2018Ms. Harrow’s debut novel was a great read with an exciting twist. I didn’t see the surprise coming. When it was revealed, it knocked me back in my chair. Unbelievable! The author did a terrific job storytelling. The suspense was well presented. The plot flowed nice & easy to its conclusion. The writing was tightly woven and quite polished for a first-time author. The characters were believable & they moved through the novel as they would in real life. There were a few typos but all in all, the editing was very good. As far as Sophie goes, I disliked her greatly. I thought she was an awful human being, always trying to justify her life choices by blaming other people.
The reader will make a good decision in purchasing this novel.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2022To the world, Harriet seems as though she is in a wonderful marriage with Dan. However, behind closed doors, things are just the opposite. After some life-changing events, Harriet manages to leave Dan and began her new life. And at the same time, a brief encounter with one of her previous neighbors, suddenly turns lives upside down, and destroys worlds! You must read this!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2020Definitely held my interest- I kept waiting for what was going to happen next. It did drag some - there was too much detail in some places which made me skip a few pages. Overall not bad, and I would recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly stunning, brilliant read
Oh boy! One of those rides that spins you around and doesn’t let go! Harriet is in a relationship with Dan. As soon as they were married, Dan changed into a controlling violent man , a mile away from the loving person she thought she had fallen for. Harriet takes her chance and leaves, having planned this for years but not having the bravery or resources to do so. When she meets an admirer and also requires counselling as she is now suffering panic attacks, she has to decide whether to tell them the truth or to keep her past from them. This is a compelling read from the word go. I took to Harriet and her situation, feeling for what had happened to her. This to me says how well it is written, that you feel for the person on the page. One of those reeds that can slightly unsettle you but you don’t quite know why. A very, very clever concept. A well written story. A brilliant read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Twelve years of physical and mental abuse.
This story is too much like many others.
The husband manipulates, controls and beats the wife...twelve year's long.
Women are generally stronger emotionally and mentally then men.
Hence the fact, that I couldn't continue reading this masochistic-type of story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Twisty Psychological Thriller With Twists You Won't See Coming
Harriet is a woman living a nightmare of physical and psychological abuse at the hands of her monster of a husband, Dan. When she finally gains the courage to flee, she lands in Coventry, and sets up a small business as a painter and gallery owner. But the Harriet we think we know isn't really the Harriet we've come to expect, and what at first seems like a simple story of a woman fleeing abuse turns out to be much more complicated. The author skillfully links 'our' Harriet to her former neighbour Sophie, a woman who lived across the hall from her when she was married to Dan. Through a series of elegantly-executed plot twists and turns, the lives of Harriet and Sophie dovetail with disastrous consequences as the violent, mentally unhinged Dan shows up to claim what he feels is rightfully his.
This book kept me turning pages, as the story unfolded bit by bit in my imagination. As soon as I thought I knew where the story was going, it changed; this kept me off-balance and ramped up the narrative tension to an almost unbearable degree. A fantastic novel by an author of genuine talent, who knows how to combine disparate plot elements to create a compulsively-readable story you won't want to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars In her footsteps
Harriet disappoints her husband. It's what he regularly says as he beats her. For years Dan and Harriet Harper appear to be a happy couple. But Harriet is daring enough to leave after a severe beating. Softie, the woman in the flat opposite often hears how clumsy Harriet is. Walking into things. Injuring herself. After Harriet has been gone, the reader follows her transition. She moved to Coventry. She opens an art gallery........ until Dan thinks he's traced her and goes for his revenge. A brilliant twist in this story, Left me racing to the end to get to it's conclusion.
