- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2016I had one reservation before I started reading this book - it's written in present tense. I have tried reading a few other novels in present tense and have not been able to finish them. Before the end of the first chapter, I knew that wasn't going to be a problem with Call of Kythshire. The prose is smooth, the descriptions are vivid without being overwhelming, and the story drew me in completely. I also enjoyed the magical system introduced. It has some unique origins, rules, restrictions, and consequences. The author seems to have put some real thought into it and how it works within her world.
The first half (or so) of the book is well paced with some action, a little backstory, and good character development. It kept me interested and coming back to the story when I had some free time. At this point it was a solid 4 star read. That changed somewhere past the halfway point, when Azi started to figure things out and the action part of the story picked up. That's when it became hard to put down and I started neglecting other things in order to read "one more chapter". Obviously, that's when it became a five star book.
Even though this is part of a series, the story is complete with a satisfying ending. I've already got the next book downloaded and will be reading it soon.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2016Right from the start, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The action and pacing was great, pulling me immediately into the head of the main character, which was both fun and frustrating. Azi is everything a strong female lead should be. She is headstrong, but not reckless, and has a solid head on her shoulders despite being a fighter. Although this is Azi's story, there are quite a few other characters, all of whom are well written and multidimensional. I had no issue with keeping the names and personalities straight, as can often be a problem with an ensemble cast, especially in fantasy settings. One particular character does try to steal the show. That would be Flit, the fairy who brings new meaning to the term colorful sidekick.
The story itself is an original take on the use and abuse of magic. For a light tale, it delves into some intriguing and dark issues. I rather enjoyed the fact that it handled the heavier subject matter without resorting as most fantasy does to the 'dark' or 'adult' realm, keeping the tone appropriate for a younger audience while still being interesting to an older crowd.
Also worth noting: the author is also an artist and has added illustrations to the book. While some say they don't add to the experience, I disagree. If anything, it brought me back to the chapter books of my childhood that often had a few illustrations interspersed. I'm glad to see that this tradition carries into the digital age and besides, the illustrations in this book are woks of art. Truly beautiful.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2016This is a well-written story to be enjoyed by all ages. When I took a "Look Inside" this book, I saw beautiful drawings of maps and scenes. I purchased the e-book and was pleasantly surprised to find them included, along with many more. The world building is detailed and colorful. The story played out like a movie in my head. The characters have distinct personalities, including the fairies, which I think are very cute. There's one who likes sugar cubes and often touches Azi's face with her sticky hands. Azi and Rian are the best of friends, but also share something more. They are both courageous, honest, and protective of each other. I like that their families have always been close friends, like family to each other, and they work hard together. If I had read this as a child, I would have concentrated on Azi's bravery and her friendships with the fairies and the Princesses. Reading this as an adult, I also enjoyed reading about the love Azi and Rian have for each other. Though I am very happy with how this story ended, I look forward to reading the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2022This book was terrific. Richly developed story line for the YA readers and older readers like me. I was looking for a good book to escape into another world. And I came across this gem. I highly recommend this book if you like books by authors in similar genres like Naomi Novak - which I do! The illustrations are lovingly drawn by the author herself. Enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2023I tried so hard to like this, but while the magic system was interesting and the world-building was good, my main problem was with the pacing. The book started strong with the first chapter, but then it got slow through the next hundred pages. It picked up again, only to get slow not long after. The story’s pacing made it hard to focus and enjoy the world-building. The ending felt a bit rushed, but it is the first of a series, so that might make it okay. Part of me wants to continue reading, but I might have to wait because I don’t like reading books with such unbalanced pacing, as it takes the fun out of the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2017The Call of Kythshire contained admirable characters juxtaposed against some really malicious and power hungry characters. Some of the characters reminded me of the current politicians of this world! But Missy Sheldrake gave her readers some interesting and amusing little people to inspire us with a vision of how seriously silly we are to have our current viewpoints.
Innocence is not contrasted with experience so much as kindness and giving is contrasted with power hunger and abuse of resources. I look forward to reading the next episode of Mrs. Sheldrake's characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio and book review. I have both listened and read this book.
Edited to add audio review.
I finished the audio today and it just blew me away.
Missy kindly gifted me a copy in exchange for an honest review of the audio in January.
I don't listen to audio often so it took me a short while to warm up to Penny's voice. More so because I have read all 5 books and have my own versions of them in my head.
A few chapters in and you can feel the story come alive. Penny has executed the pronunciations of people and places well and gives each character their own flare with the voices for them....Penny relit the fire and love I have for certain parts of the book. Like Rian's Mage "Test" so fun to listen too.
🧚♀️ Flitt's Voice is 😍 she makes me chuckle and my heart warms each time she comes on. I might be listening to a book but my head is playing a mini movie. I can't wait for the next book to be available.
Whether you have read the books or are new to the world Missy has created, you won't be dissapointed. A world filled with Knights, Mages, Fairies, Curses, Friendships, Love and Adventure 🤩
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I own all 5 books on kindle and own some of the paperbacks as well as often gifting the first book in the series to friends. This is one of my favourite series, I 💛 it so much and can't wait for the next books audio.
Book Review below.
I love'd this book and all the character's inside. It only took me a couple of chapters before I was swept up in the story and couldnt wait to see how it ended. I'm glad to find this is a series. Missy has a great storytelling style and is now one of my top 4 favourite authors. The story has a good mix of magic, other worlds combined with the normal world, love, friendship and family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Call of Kythshire
Entertaining read, good characters
- Sharon E. LeightonReviewed in Canada on October 6, 2017
4.0 out of 5 stars Read it - it's a topnotch fantasy.
I really wanted to rate this at five stars, but I once made myself a promise that anything that needed noticeably better proofreading would not ever receive a five from me. So I'm keeping my promise. However, this book is good enough that having to mentally insert or delete the odd word is not a great hardship.
The sense of place is powerful. The story develops in two distinct places, Cerion City, which is run by humans, and Kythshire, which is run by fairies. Now, these are not your average fairies, they're the best fairies I've ever run across in any story, bar none. But to get back to the sense of place: both places are presented with such a depth of sensory images that you feel as if you're there. You can hear the waves crashing against the rocks near the palace in Cerion City. You can feel the moss under your feet in Kythshire. With this kind of sense of place, a novel has the power to sweep the reader right away from the everyday, and this novel does that.
The characters are people I want to know. The viewpoint character, Azi, is true and strong, a warrior with a clean sense of right and wrong, at the same time that she's a young girl with a burgeoning interest in boys, a need to find her place in the world, and a desire to prove herself. She belongs to a guild, which is almost a family - a small, cozy, mutually committed group with an interesting array of personalities and skills. My favorite is the uncle who spends most of his time asleep; the reason for this has to do with a little red fox who carries messages and, under the right circumstances, people through the dream realm. The villains are satisfyingly evil and power-hungry, although one feels a certain pity for two of them. The allies, ranging from barely visible fairies to rock giants, are individual, courageous, and delightful.
Both Cerion City and Kythshire have their own highly regulated social systems and systems of governance. Each is distinct and thoroughly worked out. The society of fairies in Kythshire is quite original, not the sort of thing you may have read a thousand times. To say more would lead to spoilers, but I was very pleasantly surprised by the fairies.
Like all the best fantasies, the book was fun to read, suspenseful (to the point where I neglected chores to read it), and meaningful. There were some lovely, profound truths hidden in plain sight, for all to find who choose to do so.
While the book appears to have been highly influenced by J. R. R. Tolkien, there is nothing derivative here. The reader may feel that he has stumbled across another corner of the same world, somehow - but it's the mood, and the detailed world-making, and the subtle highlighting of theme that recall Tolkien. The author is considerably less verbose than Tolkien, too!
