Purchase options and add-ons

A retired cop past her prime...
A kidnapped bank robber fighting for his life...
A former mob enforcer with a blood debt...
A government assassin on the run...
A wisecracking private eye with only one hand...
A homicide sergeant with one week left on the job...

And three of the worst serial killers, ever.

This is where it all ends. An epic showdown in the desert, where good and evil will clash one last time.

His name is Luther Kite, and his specialty is murdering people in ways too horrible to imagine. He's gone south, where he's found a new, spectacular way to kill. And if you have enough money, you can bet on who dies first.

Legendary Chicago cop Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels has retired. She's no longer chasing bad guys, content to stay out of the public eye and raise her new daughter. But when her daughter's father, Phin Troutt, is kidnapped, she's forced to strap on her gun one last time.

Since being separated from his psychotic soulmate, the prolific serial killer known as Donaldson has been desperately searching for her. Now he thinks he's found out where his beloved, insane Lucy has been hiding. He's going to find her, no matter how many people die in the process.

All three will converge in the same place. La Juntita, Mexico. Where a bloodthirsty cartel is enslaving people and forcing them to fight to the death in insane, gladiator-style games.

Join Jack and Phin, Donaldson and Lucy, and Luther, for the very last act in their twisted, perverse saga.

Along for the ride are Jack's friends; Harry and Herb, as well as a mob enforcer named Tequila, and a covert operative named Chandler.

There will be blood. And death. So much death...

Fantastic follow-up to the somewhat lesser Rum Runner, this tenth installment of the Jack Daniels series is a winner from the first page. A plethora of our favorite characters in this series all co-star as Jack must find Phin, who has gone off on his own to bring down the notorious and dangerous Luther Kite. Plenty of peril and intrigue and suspense but with the usual degree of dark comedy thrown in for good measure. Donaldson’s part in this book is total comic relief, and the always-running-at-the-mouth Harry McGlade made me laugh out loud at times. On the flip side, the dark and demented characters of Luther, Lucy, and their allies sober up the reader with their macabre and gut-wrenching tortures they perform on their captives. Numerous twists to the plot and unexpected situations combine for one heck of a great book. I especially liked the way the climax was written, as the perspectives from all the major players rapidly alternate as events unfold. I was completely taken by surprise by some of the things that happened toward the ending. I also admit I’m liking Jack’s character less and less over the past couple of books, and IMHO Katie nails it with her assessment of Jack near the climax. But that doesn’t take away from this tremendously good story...it’s gotta be at or near the top of the series. Loved it.

I enjoyed reading this book in the Jack Daniels series. I'm sad that some recurring characters die(mentioned in the foreword). Herb Benedict and Harry McGlade still have some laugh out loud lines. Jack is on a rescue mission in this book. There is some graphic violence and this is not a cozy mystery.
    Two quotes:
Conversation between Jack and Harry :
"What's your take on Katie Glente?
    Harry shrugged.'I'd hit that.'
'You'd hit anything with two t### and a pulse.'
'Not true. The pulse is optional. And so are t###"

"How did anything at all get done in Phoenix? What fool thought it was a smart idea to build a city in the middle of a desert?"
I purchased this book from Amazon.

After being promised for over two years, Last Call is finally here. Was it worth the wait? Definitely.

This can be read on its own, but speaking as a huge fan that has read nearly all of the interconnected books Last Call is simply glorious. So many returning characters and threads coming together; it reminds me of a comic book crossover (before they became a scheduled yearly thing and started to suck). There is a surprise that long time readers will probably see coming, but there were a few added twists that made the whole thing work. The finale is an orgy of violence and death that is a very satisfying payoff.

I'm glad that Konrath is back, as I was afraid he was going in to James Patterson territory and would be farming out the actual writing. I can't wait for his next one. 5 stars!

Over the years I have read most of the Jack Daniels books, but I am glad to see that this one is just about the end of the series. It has a decent story line, is full of unappealing images and makes quick link references to all the previous stories before finally coming to a good ending. Go ahead and give it a try, it is a quick read.

    Guns and Glory!

    Backstory:

Phineas (Phin) Troutt decides that he wants to hunt down Luther Kite so he finds out that Luther is hiding out in Mexico. Phin sneaks away from his wife Jack and their daughter as he doesn't want to involve them in his plans. But like with any good plan it doesn't always go the right way and Phin gets captured by Kite's goons.

Jack does find out though and gathers some friends together to go on a rescue mission which results in tons of weapons and tons of skills as they need to penetrate a heavy duty cartel compound to find Phin.

Jack and crew will have their hands full as it will not be easy smuggling weapons over the border, so they have to find whatever way they can to access the compound without getting caught though it is best to have backup plans as they will need all of them before this mission is complete!

Does Jack and company find Phin? Are they able to rescue him without any casualties? Who wins and who dies? No spoilers here as you will need to read the book and the series!

    Thoughts:

This was one messed up storyline as everyone that is anyone is within these pages as there are characters pulled from stories that were also written by author Blake Crouch. So there are quite a few characters that all converge into one area of the book eventually and I was turning the pages faster as there was so much happening I couldn't lay the book down!

There is fast paced action, humor (mostly from the character Harry McGlade), suspense, tension, and intense situations. I was exhausted by the time I finished this story as so much happened that my insomnia was fueled a few nights. One main character though doesn't make it and that made me sad as I wasn't expecting it, but if you are wanting to know who that is then you will just have to read this series to find out.

Looking forward to reading the next book in the series which is White Russian as things were not as wrapped up as you are led to believe. I guess I better prepare for some more sleepless nights! :) Giving this book four "Shootout Showdown" stars!

Jack Daniels is getting together a group of her cronies for a mission. To find her husband and get him back. He has disappeared from their home on some sort of trip without letting her know where he is going. These friends like blood, they like spilling it, watching it flow from wounds they inflict with all sorts of weapons. They also like violence, just for the sake of its enjoyment. The interaction between them is bloody and they reminisce about past exploits. They have a large motor home in which to travel. The red monster is large enough to carry them all and even the large pig that is along for the ride. The pet is supposed to be smart, so teaching him tricks is part of the interaction between the characters. It is a very funny, action packed, and bloody adventure.

What an amazing book! In the usual style of Mr Konrath, ‘Last Call’ is a fabulous mixture of action, adventure, violence and laugh out loud humour. It can be read as a stand alone book but believe me, it is so much better to completely immerse yourself in the amazing world of characters created by J.A.Konrath, Blake Crouch and Ann Voss Peterson BEFORE reading this one.

Without realising what I was getting myself into, I started reading Blake Crouch’s ‘Desert Places’ (the Andrew Z. Thomas/Luther Kite) trilogy and was totally captivated by the characters. I then heard that these same characters appeared again in a book called ‘Stirred’, which is co-written by Blake Crouch and J.A.Konrath and, good grief, that book was incredible. Best plot twist ever! Now ‘Stirred’ is, in effect, Book 4 of the Blake Crouch’s ‘Thomas/Kite’ books, but it is also Book 8 of the ‘Detective Jack Daniels’ by J.A Konrath. Confused?!? Don’t be. Everything links up in the end as I discovered after going back to Jack Daniels Book 1 “Whiskey Sour” and starting on that entire series, slowly working my way up to ‘Last Call, which is Book 10.

But don’t start reading it yet... If you loved Donaldson and Lucy (also from ‘Stirred’) then you should definately read the short stories of the “Serial Killers Uncut” book. And, you should also read the Codename Chandler series (‘Hit’, ‘Naughty’, ‘Exposed’, ‘Flee’, ‘Spree’ and ‘Three’, co-written by J.A.Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson. I know, it’s a lot of books, but they are all so much fun and they all link together brilliantly and then the whole world of serial killers, detectives and assassins will be truly mind-blowing, and reading ‘Last Call’ will be so much more enjoyable.

How these three authors have brought their many many characters together and spread them across so many books is really amazing and I find myself re-reading certain books when a character from something I’ve already read crops up somewhere else. It truly is a whole universe! The books are sick, twisted, funny, unbelievable, hilarious and disgusting, yet you find yourself rooting for the characters, good guys and bad guys alike! Tequila and Hammett will always hold a special place in my heart!

Anyway, I need to go and start on the Val Ryker/Dixon Hess series. These books really take over your life, but you will love every word of them!

The series has been a blast throughout. Great characters. Unlikely situations. Irreverent. Some might say they're an acquired taste, and I wouldn't argue with that. Every now and then, it's good to try something different.
