The Mike Stoneman Thriller Series was born from a short story called Fool Me Twice, which won first prize in a 2012 short story writing competition. You can find Fool Me Twice on the Mike Stoneman Thriller Series page. When we meet up with Mike in the first full-length novel, Righteous Assassin, Mike has a new partner, a young Black detective named Jason Dickson. Mike and Jason don't get along in the beginning. Mike thinks Jason got special treatment because he's Black. Mike thinks Jason hasn't paid his dues. But it's Jason who puts the first pieces together to link four murders to a possible serial killer. Mike is also struggling his way through the first stages of what he hopes will be a romance with the county medical examiner, Michelle McNeill. In the later books, Jason's romance with Rachel Robinson becomes an important part of the story. Come along with Mike, Jason, Michelle, and Rachel as their adventures take them on a Bermuda cruise, and a trip to Las Vegas.

"This was such a satisfying read. The opening was terrific and pulled me right in. .. . Your characters were very true to life. There were no clichés or tired tropes. You also have a gift for keeping the tension and pacing in your narrative. It made me want to turn the pages to find out what happens next. . .. . Great job!"

"Author Chapman meticulously paints a vivid picture of life on board a luxury cruise ship, evendown to the towel animals placed on the turned-down beds of the passengers each night! . . .
Lethal Voyage is a great escapist read. And as the wind howls outside and rain batters the window, that's just what's needed right now!"

"
Lethal Voyage is an engaging story that hooks you on page one and doesn't let up until the very end . . . Mike Stoneman and Jason Dickson are the perfect team of detectives who don't let up until they solve the crime. Michelle and Rachel as Stoneman's and Dickson's girlfriends respectively, are the perfect additions to this crime solving team.

From the Author

Lethal Voyage -- which is NOT about COVID-19 at all -- is the third installment in the Mike Stoneman Thriller series. It was a blast for me to write a story set on a cruise ship. My wife and I have spent many days aboard the fleet of Royal Caribbean as well as Norwegian, Celebrity, and others. A cruise ship is a great setting for a story -- it's a kind of "closed room" setting, although here a little bit of the story takes place before the sailing. Still, it makes for a tight plot. It also allows me to keep the fictional time line for Mike Stoneman's universe before the global pandemic hits in the US in March of 2020. Look for all 5 books in the current story arc to occur during the "before times."

Kevin G. Chapman’s third installment in the Mike Stoneman series is the best so far. The novel felt leaner and faster paced than the first two.

A grisly murder on a cruise ship introduces a claustrophobic dynamic to the tale as Stoneman has no authority and is forced to deal with ship politics. These parts were my favorite, as they put a twist on an overused trope in detective fiction, which I won’t share to avoid spoilers.

What I will share is this book reminds me why I avoid cruises, norovirus and pandemics notwithstanding.

The novel offers tension, action, and it’s fun to watch the case develop as Stoneman and his allies follow the clues. This leads to the fact there’s also good character chemistry. Stoneman isn’t a solo act and he relies on his allies to help him crack the case.

    A page-turner. Recommended.

Elmore Leonard had certain books that had idiosyncratic characters and humor intermingled with grit and violence. That’s what Kevin Chapman’s Lethal Voyage reminded me of. I haven’t read the first two books in the Mike Stoneman series. Doing so might have helped flesh out the main characters for me a bit more, but I still found them very engaging and this third book in the series very enjoyable. (And intend to dig into the first two.) I’ve never taken a cruise, so I found all the details fascinating. It’s a great setting for a thriller and the supporting characters were vivid, offbeat and distinctive. The main characters didn’t feel like they were in much danger through most of the action, though the danger did ramp up as the story progressed and that kept me turning pages all the way to the end.

Probably my favorite book of the three that comprise this series. I’m not a cruiser, but I did recently visit Bermuda and it was great to see some familiar haunts even as the case moved away from Mike and Jason’s typical beats.

Even with the deliberate air of mystery around one of the women, the limited number of characters allowed those that were part of the narrative to grow into fully fleshed people vs just characters on a page. I felt as if I knew the Blooms and wanted to know more about Elisabeth’s hold on Marjorie. While I can’t recall whether we met Ferguson in a prior book, it was nice to have him on the ship to tie the ship security and NYPD together.

A fun, quick read, and great use of Chicago as the ship’s show to further tie things together.

Mike Stoneman does it again. You’d think he’d get to take a vacation, but when a passenger dies suspiciously two cabins down, Mike’s instincts kick in and he’s on the trail of a murderer. Michelle and Jason help him along as everyone’s vacation goes sour. Like the other Mike Stoneman books, this is another great mystery. Good realistic action and excellent human characters. I especially liked how Michelle got to be an ME while on vacation as well. The only downside is this one felt a bit like a trope. “Cop on a cruise ship” has been done a few times from Poirot to Columbo, and I sincerely hope cruise lines do better than portrayed.

I'd heard about Kevin Chapman's up and coming series and placed the books in my 'want to read' list in my Goodreads account. I was thrilled when I broke open my kindle and started reading about the captivating NYPD homicide detective, Mike Stoneman (what a great name). In this book, Stoneman and his new work partner Jason Dickson embark on a Caribbean cruise with their girlfriends.

Murder, suspense, a vivid look at being a passenger, and a little poker fun kept the pages turning. I've never been on a cruise, but came away with the feeling of wanting to sail the high seas, but a little wary of MURDER!

For those of us who like the details of police procedures, you're allowed to walk through investigations, and learn the intricacies of law at sea.

Put Kevin Chapman on your 'must read' list and watch a new author explode into stardom!

This book does a great job of capturing the cruise ship environment. Mike and his partner track down a murderer while encountering stiff resistance from the Security Director for the ship. Lots of excitement, violence and danger, but even a sleepy reader will have no problem figuring out the culprit. I found the book interesting, but not heart-pounding.

Hope I never land up on a cruise with this much going on behind the scenes!! A cleverly out together Iove trust at the end of the day. Add in the fact that Mike and Jason, along with their wives were meant to be on vacation makes this yet another good read in the series. May well be tempted again for the next novel!!
