“Together we’ll find our strength. . .” is a line from one of Kathleen Harryman’s poems. When I read that line I felt that she has given us all a foundation stone for our lives. We are here, shoulder to shoulder, to help each other find our strength. And that is the way of her poetry. In the midst of her sorrow over the heartbreaks she has had, she perseveres. Her poems light the way when we feel burdened and beaten down by life’s many challenges. Beautifully written, these poems clearly come from the heart, and they bring strength to my heart. My thanks go out to this gifted poet.

Review for Where Friendship is Made and Family Begins by Kathleen Harryman
Here is a lovely collection of 85 or more poems written mainly by Harryman but with a couple of relatives thrown in the soup. The poems deal with mostly traditional themes of life, love, nature, sorrow, aging and death, but this one revolves around the family circle. We get a deeply emotional view into an English family with strong ties and love, but with a kind of mourning celebratory wake for a passing patriarch. The poems that explain in broad etheric strokes the emotion behind the daughter and the octogenarian father are the powerful moments. There also some notable poems of haunting beauty like Whispers in the Wind, Time, My Father’s Tears, Stuck, Yearning, Take, Child of Mine, Ahh…What a Mess, where the author shows an amazing soulful quality of both reflection, waxing philosophical, and a sadness that captures that essence of the mysteries of living. This is her strong suit. The downside in this collection are the few poems of nature that should have been cut. Resounding however, is the fabulous look at a traditional English family with great love in their ranks, and a beautiful history to look back upon. This poetry is an inspiring look at love between children and parents, all emanating from proper parenting. Those that love key issues of civilization will enjoy, and learn. This is a supremely emotional ode to the love of family, I was driven to tears for the loss, nevertheless a magnificent tribute to a worthy father.

    A lovely collection of poetry.

Kathleen Harryman’s poetry sings the familiar songs of life – love, loss, heartbreak and friendship that shape us into resilient human beings – all find a mention in this book. Her spontaneous style flows like a stream, taking you along with the current to discover the boulders that she hopes to navigate with the support of her loving family. She is lucky to have such friends who “were there” when she needed them to provide her succor, solace and peace. You could relate to many poems like “The Perfect Part of Me,” “News” “Dare to Dream” and “These Hands,” as they seem a chunk of your own joyous or dark moments.

I could hear the “Whispers in the Wind,” and feel the sadness associated with it. I could visualize the “Guardian Angel” who sat at the edge of the poet’s bed and the “monsters” of ‘Twilight” – such is the power of her poetry. Kathleen’s simple style has a child-like charm that allures even when she is pouring her pain into the words. I finished this book within an hour and felt reassured how emotions and relationships create a calming aura around us.

What a joy to read this collection of poetry, touching on all of those who we love and all that we lose in our lifetime.

There was beautiful imagery in poems. I had a particular fondness for “Guardian Angel,” “Twilight,” and “Overcrowded.” They were so lovely that I read them again. In “Red Sun,” the sadness of impending grief spoke for so many of us.

The poem “Time” really touched me, railing against the brevity of our lives and time’s lack of compassion as it moves forward faster than we wish it to do.

“Does Santa Really Exist” offered a beautiful answer to the quizzical child’s question. “Ode to Your Shed” was one of my favorites and really made me smile.

“The Perfect Me” reminded me of myself and of most people know: looking in the mirror, observing our flaws, and coming to terms with how we see ourselves.

Overall, what I really loved about this collection was that the poems not only paid tribute to family, but also to the pets we love throughout our lives, and to friendship. And “A Little Piece of Me,” the final poem which spoke of all of the other poems, was delightful. I could say something about every single poem; truly enjoyable. Oh, and last but not least, I loved the whimsical illustrations throughout. A special collaborative effort.

Where Friendship is Made and Family Begins is a thoughtful poetry collection published by Kathleen Harryman that includes the contributions of other talented poets. Unlike some other poetry books I have read, this one is weighty; it surprised me how many different poems there were inside. I definitely got my money’s worth!

The other unique aspect of the collection is the sketches interspersed throughout the pages. I enjoyed this immensely.

I also really appreciated how thematically diverse the poems were; for example, in “Red”, the author captures the passionate outrage the speaker expresses towards another person, possibly a former lover. Who among us has not been betrayed at some point? This makes the poem highly relatable.

As a writer, I could also relate to the poem “Words” in which Harryman aptly captures their power & beauty when she says, “Words are magic”. They certainly are.

5 stars for a poetry collection I highly recommend for others who enjoy the expression of deep emotion in words & pictures.

    Life’s Echoes by Kathleen Harryman
This beautiful book takes us on an enchanting journey throughout the life as witnessed, seen and experienced by Kathleen, her sister and their mother. They each influence their writing with their honesty and love, often culminating in an emotion of both tears of joy and sadness, but accept that life, like time will always move on regardless.
Kathleen writes with such passion that it is impossible not be touched by what she writes. Close your eyes and you could be in the same room, field or on a walk with the dog and her family.
This book of poetry doesn’t always rhyme, but it doesn’t need too because the poetry is telling a story, an account of the heartfelt love Kathleen has for her life, her family and friends, and pets.
    A recommended read.

Kathleen Harryman has written a succession of poems revealing recurring themes of love, life, death and even betrayal.
Despite baring her heartache and some emotional scars, the author’s tone remains upbeat and a warm nimbus of kindness radiates from her prose.
There are moments of such heart-rending poignancy that it’s impossible not to join in her sadness. The death of her dear father, for example, is lamented with an outpouring of enduring love, and an ode to her sisters is touching in the extreme.
It’s clearly evident that Harryman is an advocate for kindness; she cares about people, nature, family, human bonds and family pets. This tender book will strike a chord with anyone who has had to overcome loss and personal distress.
