Lucy's Story: The End of the World (The Caretaker Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
The Caretaker Series is a trilogy of books designed to hold your child's attention through fast-paced storytelling, expand vocabulary, and provide a high-interest and humorous reading experience. The fast pacing and short chapters make it ideal for bedtime reading, or for reluctant - but capable - readers. Ideal for ages 8-13. LUCY'S STORY: THE END OF THE WORLD When Lucy Carroll began writing ‘The End of the World’ she didn’t want it to actually happen – but destiny had other plans for her. Now, locked in the Galaxy Tower with a grumpy captor, a cheery wizard, and all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures, Lucy needs to get back to Earth and somehow restore the planet – and everyone on it – back to life. All Lucy has on her side is the power of imagination, and her newfound friends… but will they be enough?

About the author

Z.R. Southcombe (Zee) is a writer and artist. Her books are written for children, but with their wild sense of imagination, rich vocabulary and emotional resonance they are loved by readers of all ages. Her artwork also draws on her imagination, seeking emotive resonance in the viewer. Zee also loves the freedom and hands-on nature of zine-making, and has several zines available about writing (and other things).
A true creative, Zee usually has a few creative projects on the go, but no matter what project she is currently working on, Zee is usually accompanied by a cup of tea.
Zee makes art for her own fulfillment, but loves when she can share her passion with others, inspiring them to follow their own dreams – wherever they may lead.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2015Format: Kindle"Lucy's Story", the second of "The Caretaker of Imagination" series, finds the niece of the first book's protagonist a little bit older and, like her uncle John in the first book, under pressure from her mother to put aside her imagination to concentrate on the responsibilities of her upcoming adulthood. But the powers of her imagination are not to be denied. In fact, they exact a toll that changes everything in Lucy's life.
Thus begins an odyssey for Lucy, as she travels on a magical train filled with fanciful creatures to a place called the Galaxy Tower, where she learns that a story she had started has led to the seeming end to her world. Not only that, but monsters she created with her imagination become very real and set out after her.
I love this series because Z. R. Southcombe never talks down to her target readers, which are children. She shows them that actions, intentional or not, have consequences that need to be dealt with. She also shows them that imagination is, indeed, a powerful attribute to have, and that it can accomplish much more good than bad.
The author's voice flows beautifully off the pages. This is a book that begs to be read aloud. I can't wait for the next book!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFor only being a 63 page book this story has WAY too much dialogue that really bogs it down. At about the 30% mark on my Kindle thru to the 50% there was very little action. Finally in Chapter 12 we get to see some action and the ending of the book brings hope. (Rather dark at the beginning.) I also see some disrespect in Lucy for her mother and adults in general.
Lucy is now 12 1/2. Due to Uncle John's stories, the main character in Book 1, Lucy has become a great writer and features herself as a brave adventurer. Disenchanted with life, thinking the only adventures she will go on are through her stories, that all changes one night. As she gets on a train and meets a mantis-cat, she is then taken to meet The Keeper of Destiny who is not very happy to see her alive. Has Earth really been destroyed? If so why? Is Lucy to blame?
Having read the first book I was hoping that the second book would be edited a little better but sadly that is not the case. There are several examples of run-on sentences plus some that should be joined making for a frustrated read. There are some wonderful illustrations but it would be better if they were bigger.
This is the second book in the trilogy. It does have an ending but is also set up for the next/last book in the series. I will not be reading anymore as this one was truly a disappointment. I purchased this book for my Kindle. I was not required to leave a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2015Format: KindleThis story is quite entertaining and the pace kept me reading until I was finished in one sitting. I particularly like the ease of reading in this story, perfect for kids, but with a depth to the story if a reader wishes to examine key issues.
I highly recommend this book to all children of appropriate age (I believe age 7 and up is the range). This is the type of book that can inspire a young reader to read more books as is fires up the imagination and has easy to understand imagery.
In closing - buy this book in paperback - it's has quite a nice cover and very easy on the eyes font. that said, I plan to download the e-book as well.
Well done to the author.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2015Format: KindleSimiliar to the first book in this series 'The Caretaker of Imagination', Lucy's Story is a story with many levels, depending on the ability/age of the reader. I liked the character Lucy, she is very real and children will relate well with her and the situations she finds herself in. There are many deep questions included in the story (i.e the existence of God), which can be explored in depth or brushed over and the reader just enjoy the exciting, a bit scary and fascinating fast paced story line. I will be looking forward to No3 in the series, to find out what happens to Lucy and to the world and of course Uncle John. This book will be enjoyed by all who read it.
