Matzah Mia! (Jewish Regency Mystery Series Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

There’s trouble afoot in Regency London’s Jewish community, and no one to stop the crimes — until wealthy-widower-turned-sleuth Mr. Ezra Melamed teams up with an unlikely pair: General Well’ngone and the Earl of Gravel Lane, the lovably quirky leaders of a gang of young Jewish pickpockets.

t’s not a Jewish baker’s worst nightmare, but it’s a very close second. When a sack full of counterfeit gold coins is found in Mr. Kornberry’s matzah bakery right before Passover, the unfortunate baker is arrested and sent to Newgate Prison to await his trial—and if Mr. Melamed can’t prove his innocence the baker will hang.

But to Mr. Melamed’s dismay, every clue leads in an equally distressing direction. Because if the baker didn’t do it, it seems there is only one other person who could have counterfeited the coins—the baker’s opera-loving son.

Matzah Mia! is the fifth book in the Jewish Regency Mystery series, a refreshingly different look at Regency England which combines lovably quirky characters with a generous dash of humor.

It Takes a Community to Solve a Crime

Great Synagogue, London

I love doing the historical research for the series, but I know that too much historical detail can sink a story. So sometimes I'll add a historical note at the end of the novel, for the kindred spirits out there, such as the ones in these books:

  • Jewish Regency Mystery Stories: Yes, There Were Jews in Regency England!
  • Jewish Regency Mystery Stories, Vol. II: A Small History of London's Great Synagogue

Welcome to the Jewish Regency Mystery Series

(Yes, There Were Jews Living in Regency England!)

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes at least a village-sized community to sustain a series - and I was certain this sort of Jewish community didn't exist alongside Jane Austen's Bennett sisters, et al. Fortunately, I was wrong. From financiers to orphaned pickpockets, Jews were very much a part of this memorable era - and I hope you'll have as much fun reading about them as I've had writing the series.

  • In addition to the full-length mysteries, there are several short mystery stories - some of which provide insights into the Jewish holidays:
  • The Melancholy Menorah: Chanukah
  • What's in a Flame: Sukkos
  • Costumed Foolery: Purim
  • The Petrified Psalm: Shavuos

4.0 out of 5 stars A Regency mystery with a jewish flavour
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2020
This is a readable mystery set in Regency London, but not in the aristocratic ballrooms. It explores the poor districts of the city, and particularly the Jewish immigrants who live there. Readable and entertaining.
