Lovely book but clearly not “new”

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2016Ok. So normally I do not write book reviews - mainly because I feel like they are one sided and non objective. Just because you don't like someone's writing style doesn't mean it isn't good!
So the first thing I loved about this book is that a good portion of the translated text was made into a poem of sorts, and then passed off as prose by Charlie Chaplin. " Gosh I love when that happens... " - Ben Franklin - yeah. You see what I did there? Anyhow, I digress. When I went sleuthing the original author of that prose - I happened across a comment by Alison McMillen, Kim's daughter where she eloquently described how and when her Mom wrote this book and when she think the text was re-appropriated as Charlie's. I was in! I ordered three copies of this little cute self help book and sent out one to my sister in law (struggling with being older and hating the way that makes her feel) and to our daughter, just turned 22 - also struggling with body and aging issues... like she doesn't want to like herself, because no one her age does!) I digress.
I kept one for myself. I read it in half an hour and refer back to it when I need to share a snippet of good will with another human being. Get this book. Keep it on your shelf for your needy occasions. Buy a few copies so you have one on hand to help that struggling friend find their way through a depressive haze. It's worth it. And it will mean so much to the receiver. This is a book that will be shared reader to reader forever. The honest and inspirational messaging will keep that inner chi flowing!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020Simple, profound truths to finally befriend yourself. I believe this is the way to inner peace - making peace with yourself. Who do we push away, reject, snub, criticize and judge that would want to hang around? Yet this is what alot of us do to ourselves. If you want to end the internal battle, this is a good place to begin.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2013I got this book for myself and in turn have purchased it for several as my friends have gone through difficult times. It's a simple book that was written from the soul.
Update: I have gone back to this book over and over and taken away so much from the simple statements. I'm really thankful this book was published. It makes sense to me that this was the end goal for the author - she shared what she had learned and then went on to other things. Thank you for the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2017Someone gifted this book to me twenty years ago, and it's still such a special gift. Every once in a while, someone comes along who needs it, and I gift it to them, too. I hope Ms. McMillen knows that her mother's life work is still having an impact, all these years later. My most recent gift of this book was to an executive consulting client...a woman who's had massive success, but needed the soul-level, self-loving perspective this book offers. And every time I give it to someone else, I read it through for myself again. The gift that keeps on giving, indeed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 14, 2014the Chaplin quote on his 70th led me to the book- I wanted to know more and verify and discovered this book. Inspiring and complex- simple and broad reaching. Best advice i can give anyone is to try to be nice to yourself and try to learn to love and treat yourself with compassion in ALL THINGS. It touches every part of one's life- every single aspiration, challenge, goal, etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2012Kim, I am so moved by the first few pages I've read. My mother, too, died suddenly and young (55). I feel I am living the legacy she left behind. Thanks for this powerful vision of self-discovery through loss. I am buying this book.
I would also be open to producing the audio version of this book as I'm an audio producer for major publishing companies. I think "hearing" it would be so inspiring. Thank you.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2022I was so very disappointed to see that there was scribbling that was meant to cover up someone’s inscription in this book. The condition was marked as “new” , but that’s clearly not the case. Otherwise a very sweet little book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gift for all daughters ~to comprehend a simple art
An Extraordinary book every mother needs to place in the hands of her young daughter,to teach her the wisdom of loving herself completely, heal the unloved parts of herself....and realize the simplest insight....that first cultivating compassion for ourselves is the way to recognize the compassion towards the World. The only way to let divine compassion and healing flow to the world....you must first master the gift of loving yourself....

5.0 out of 5 stars Life saver!
I was first bought this by a friend when I was going through a divorce. It was a beautiful loving gift. I still randomly pick a page and read it, just to remind myself to treat me with love and respect. It’s so easy to forget
