Melting His Heart: Sexy enemies-to-lovers romance (Heartlands Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 339 ratings

Kate Pleasance needs to flee her home city of Auckland and create a new life away from family stress and infidelity. Might the advertisement seeking a ‘Superwoman’ be her answer?

Short-listed, she’s flown to the vibrant winter tourist resort of Queenstown at her prospective employer’s expense. Snow is dusting the mountain tops as the jet glides in, and she’s shocked to be collected by tall, dark internet billionaire Matthew McLeod. Where is the woman she spoke with on the phone? Kate is driven first to hospital to meet his injured sister, and then to their magnificent home to stay the night. Lottie is a world-famous painter, and Kate craves the job as her assistant, but she’s totally unsettled by charismatic Matthew who teases her unmercifully. Knowing she’s dangerously attracted, she vows to refuse the job, should it be offered, and run like hell.

After a disastrous first marriage, Matthew has lived in a freezing void. He’s buried himself in his work to keep the demons at bay, but now there’s a potent new threat tearing at his resolve. Although she’s plainly diving for cover, job-seeker Kate is dragging his ruthlessly suppressed emotions back to the surface. Temptation he’s easily shrugged off in the past now eats him alive. Can he persuade her to stay long enough to fan the smoldering sparks between them until they burst into white-hot flames?

A note from Kris: MELTING HIS HEART is the first in my Heartlands trilogy. Set in the spectacular rural scenery of New Zealand, these novels take you to faraway places where real men and women seek lasting love – sometimes against daunting odds. If you enjoy romance that leaps off the page – funny, furious and feel-good – download this sizzling hot story now, and be sure to follow it with CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY HEARTS and COWBOY WANTS HER HEART.

All my books can be read as standalones, and there are no cliff-hangers. The Heartlands books and Scarlet Bay books are best read in order, but you can read the South & Sexy books any way you please. Thanks for coming to meet me. I love words, and I use them to make the world a happier place by creating people who are perfect for each other – although maybe they can’t see that to start with.

I began writing at my local radio station in New Zealand and never stopped. TV followed, then horticultural articles (because I'm a keen gardener). After several advertising agencies, I then spent happy years as a retail ad manager. Totally hooked on fabrics, I surprised everyone by going into the curtain installation business with my husband and working for some of the capital city’s top designers. Good for my body, and it freed up my brain to write fiction. I didn't fall off my ladder once through drifting into romantic dreams, but I’ve certainly seen many beautiful homes and met wonderful people, and I may just have stolen glimpses of them for the books. (I didn’t say that, did I?)

I write sexy contemporary romance under my real name and the Merry Summerfield cozy mysteries as Kristie Klewes. These are funny and flirty and absolutely clean. (Well - apart from the bloodstains!)

I’m the author of more than thirty novellas and novels, three of which were finalists in New Zealand’s Clendon Award. Each can be read as a stand-alone, but some make up linked series. I hope you enjoy them all.

My more recent romances are billionaire beach stories about the wealthy Wynn family in Scarlet Bay - Summer Sparks, Summer Secrets, and Summer Spice. And the new Promise books - Promise You Nothing and Promise You Plenty.

Kris es una chispeante autora de romántica contemporánea, pura y simplemente. ¡Bueno, quizá no tan pura!

MELTING HIS HEART is a standalone read with a happy ending. Good story. Loved the hero, he is rich, smart, cocky and a little bit alpha. He has a keen sense of humor and can be cold and distant when the situation calls for it. He has his half-sister living with him. She is a very famous artist but is sorely lacking in all the other skills. She needs an assistant so he places an ad and the heroine answers it.

She is at a place in her life where she needs something new and to start over. She shows up for the interview only to be faced with the hero. She assumes he is the husband of the painter but he is very attractive and he seems to be flirting with her. She is very distant but he persists. They dance around each other until she finds out a big surprise.

He has a few problems with who he thinks she is. Her father is his biggest competitor in his tech industry and he is afraid the daughter is there to spy on him using any weapon in her arsenal. She doesn't have a clue. It is a good read. Very entertaining and has a HEA. The books in this series can be standalone reads with no cliffhangers. I really enjoyed it and definitely recommend it.

I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.

Misunderstandings happen right out of the gate. Kate is almost instantly attracted to Matt but is believing he is already taken. And being a good woman, she doesn't mess with married men. Oh, the problems this causes.
Kate is looking for a new life but she's finding quite a few challenges along the way. The main one being Matthew.
I did enjoy the fact that I got to "hear" both P.O.V.'s from the main characters. Charlotte/Lottie made for a good, quirky secondary character too.
Overall it was a good emotional, push towards-pull away, romance story. And the misunderstandings continued for a while because of past hurts and suspicions. Speaking of suspicions, Kate's father isn't even there and he is causing problems that he doesn't even know about. There is also some humorous games that went on too.
I enjoyed this book; a charming but at times hot story that ends up with a H.E.A. and no cliffhangers.

A good story, great scenery and romance. Some editing errors throughout, but not too bad. Towards the ending was a bit too mushy for me though, otherwise not a bad read.

A fun and easy read with a side of heat and a boat load of lustful tension. Enough suspense to keep it interesting and the HEA we all like. The background stories could have been more developed for clearer understanding instead of just hinted at to get a good grasp of how it affected the outcome. Not sure how the series might continue with existing characters, it looks like the location might be the common factor. All in all a good read.

Kate applied for a job with Lottie. She broke her ankle so Matthew had to pick up Kate. He just noticed her last name was the same as his biggest business rival. Could she be a plant to spy on him. Even if she was he was attracted to her. Katie wasn't liking his attitude but she was attracted to him.
The story has many twists and turn. Definitely worth reading.

I was engaged from the beginning and anxious to see what would happen next. Matthew had been betrayed by a scheming ex wife who left him bitter. When Kate arrived for a job interview with his sister Charlotte he suspected she was there to spy for her father who was a business rival. In spite of that fact he was immediately drawn to Kate. While Kate was caring for her mother who was dying of cancer the man she was with left her. She applied for this position to move from Ackland to Queensland for a new beginning. She was attracted to Matthew but believed Charlotte was his wife, not his sister. I liked the way these two bantered and fumbled their way into their relationship. They truly belonged together. Charlotte is a little eccentric and added a lot in her efforts to get them together.

I loved this book!! So much so that I’ve now read it three times in the less than two weeks I’ve owned it. It starts with a woman applying to be the personal assistant to someone she could never imagined, when she landed on the flight in to a town hours away from her home. Being picked up at the airport by a handsome man, instead of her possible woman employer as she expected, with the teasing beginning from their first handshake. This story is the scene and man that every woman could only imagine, or dream, could happen to her. You’ll love the sexy back and forth between Matthew and Katy as they play sexy games of whether each desires the other. Of course, with set backs, delays and teasing before pursuing what was thought to be the impossible. Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars arrogant, insufferable controlling Hero.
Reviewed in Australia on October 22, 2018
So far I am dispising this book. I am only up to 58% but so far determined to finish. My overall feeling is one of anger. We have the weak as water heroine and the horrible, arrogant, insufferable Hero. I pretty much want to punch him on every page. If my attitude changes I will lose or raise my stars but right now 2 is being generous. If anyone really acted like that they would get sued for sexual harassment. He doesn't have any right to tell her what colour to wear, to remove her scarf or to continually keep touching her. He treats her like she is his personal toy from day one. She isn't his girlfriend, she is there for a job. She has told him no on at least two occasions but he goes right on touching. Infuriating.

2.0 out of 5 stars Put off
Reviewed in Canada on January 25, 2018
I've enjoyed this author's books and expected this one to be the same quality. However, it gave me the impression of leaping into a story with unsympathetic characters. I was put off by the hero's apparent willingness to dabble with the new hire, and equally put off by how tempted the heroine was to reciprocate, when she believed him to be married to the woman she was to work for. He was pushy to the extent that it bordered on harassment and while she had the opportunity to deal with that--and leave--she chose not to, while still under the impression he was a married man. There was nothing that might reasonably keep her in the situation, like poverty or repression, for example. The story felt rushed and his reaction to her when he thought she was betraying him was hardly based on a relationship gone awry. Well written and edited, it was still a book I regretted purchasing.

Again another good read from kris and she never disappoints, I have read most of her wellington series and when i saw this i couldnt wait to get stuck in, her books are all happily ended but with bumps in the road toward that ending with both strong characters and good back ground stories, this lived up to the others, good characters with a touch of jumping to conclusions due to family connections and romance which never hurts a book, as always can never put her books down.

I loved this book. It was so much fun to read. I adored the quid pro quos, the rapport between Kate and Matthew - and Lottie was such fun! Add in a beautiful setting, creative and fluid writing and I was hooked. It's the first time I've read a book by this author, it won't be the last.
