About the author

London-born Devra is a prolific composer, songwriter and keyboardist, as well as an author of books for kids. Trained at the Trinity College of Music in England, she has worked with such legendary artists as John Lennon, Cher, Diana Ross, The Jackson Five, Leonard Cohen and George Harrison. She wrote 2 top-ten singles for her own band on Jupiter Records. She became well known as a virtuoso player in the London session scene in the eighties and joined Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame as a keyboard player for a tour of Britain. While on the road, her manager informed her that 2 of her songs had won 1st and 2nd place, respectively, out of over 3000 entries in the BBC Song Contest. Moving to America in the nineties, Devra teamed up with a lyricist to write and compose a musical, “Cole and Porter” which had a successful run in Los Angeles at the Hudson Theatre.
Devra lives in Sarasota Florida now and has authored a trilogy of illustrated dog stories for children aged 7-12; The Muffy Series: "Muffy and the Dog Catcher," "Muffy's Florida Adventure" and "Muffy and the Medicine Cat". Her books, for middle grade and young adult readers, "The Efficiency Claus," "The Henge," and "The Dream Stealers," are available now.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMuffy is a little puppy and her family didn't want her to go out in the field with them because they found her too little and too fragile and wanted to protect her. But does it really protect somebody when they're not allowed to go out? Muffy was sad and lonely when everybody was gone. And one day she saw a grasshopper in the yard around the farm where she lived. He was so funny and jumping around. Muffy got fascinated by him, forgot everything and started jumping and playing with her new friend. Different hours later, the grasshopper certainly has gone home to his family, but Muffy was alone. Where was she? She couldn't find the way back to the farm and she run and run and run. She had no clue where she was. She was hungry, thirsty and tired...
Totaly exhausted she finaly saw a farm, not her home, but it was a house. Lucky for her the Gabriels were living there with a bunch of all different dogs they had addopted. Radar, Freedom and the other dogs approached Muffy, and also Mom and Dad (the dogs called the humans so) came. Everybody was friendly to Muffy gave her food, and very soon she was adopted and member of the Gabriels family too.
At that point in the book I was thinking this was maybe too explicit utopia fantasy and morals. But reading on, I started more and more adoring this book. The author brings in fact a strong message of life. She describes in very rich détail, with beautiful formed sentences, all emotions Muffy lived while she was totally lost. Finding this unusual adopting family was a blessing for Muffy. The Gabriels with Mom and Dad and 5 different dogs, who all felt as one big family, is also showing the richness of diversity. The strong message of not judging somebody without first marching in his shoes is a fantastic moral to give children (and in fact everybody) to not prejudge.
Muffy very quickly felt part of the family. But one day she told her new brother Radar that she missed Riff, her twin sister and her family of birth so much. That she would love she could find a way to find them and tell them she is OK and they don't need to worry about her. And then come back to her new family.
Not only the inner life of Muffy is described by the author. She also gives an insight in the world of dogs who are born in a dog factory. How difficult and scary their traveling from the factory to the pet shop can be. How they afterwards can be treated very bad as Wise Dog experienced, but there were also good examples as Radar was adopted by lovely humans.
With the help of Radar and Wise Dog, Muffy met the Dog Catcher and from being 'a lost dog' she became 'a dog with a passion'. But to know how it ends you need to read the book yourself!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story follows the adventures of a lost pup. Along with an interesting storyline, the author has incorporated dog training/ behavorist skill info into the story. I think this book appeals to all ages...children will love the adventure and adults and older children will learn skills on forming a happy and balanced dog pack! Highly recommend it! Also, the illustrations are very nice, very artistic!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017Format: KindleThe first book in the “Muffy” series introduces a number of captivating characters. Kids will love the characters and will identify with Muffy’s struggles to fit in. They will enjoy getting into the minds of the dogs, as the dog catcher does.
