When a young minstrel discovers her power within, she must make the impossible choice between kinship and destiny.

Mya Songspinner used to be certain Pa loves her, but now, she’s not so sure. When he leaves her to work at a miller’s, his promised month’s absence drags into several weeks. She wonders if he’s ever coming back, until his new companion arrives to lure her aboard a pirate ship with shady promises. Mya tries to keep her guard up and her voice down, but an attack by evil sorcerers forces her to step out of the shadows…

Saving them all with the magic of her voice, the would-be minstrel is upset when her vagabond father fails to meet her once ashore. Stirring suspicions she might be part siren, and forced into a singing contest with the prize a fortune richer than she can fathom, Mya begins to fear someone close to her might have sinister plans for her extraordinary power.

Will she make an impossible choice between kinship and destiny, and finally find a place to call home?

Song Spinner, formerly titled "Mya", is the thrilling stand-alone first book in the “His Majesty’s Elite” young adult fantasy series. If you like immersive worlds, vibrant characters, and coming-of-age fantasy adventures, then you’ll love Missy Sheldrake’s captivating tale.

Missy Sheldrake is an epic daydreamer and a muse of positivity who weaves worlds full of character-driven, complex fantasy adventures.

In 2014, she dusted off an unfinished, Tassy Walden Award-winning manuscript from her college days, started writing her first novel, Call of Kythshire, and never looked back. In four short years, she completed the five-book Keepers of the Wellsprings series, an epic high-fantasy young adult adventure that was awarded the Golden Squirrel Independent Book Award in 2017 for Best Fantasy.

When she isn't writing, Missy can be found creating fantastical artworks in paint and clay, wandering hidden forest paths, and concocting plots for imaginary people who are beyond real to her. A prequel to the Keepers of the Wellsprings series, this is a story that easily stands alone as a most excellent work of fantasy fiction.  Sheldrake’s storytelling is as mesmerising as the songs of her minstrels, making this magical sword and sorcery fantasy for Young Adult and older readers a spellbinding tale that, once started, is hard to put down.

Magically and mystically gifted, Mya is a young woman like no other, Her story is one of adventure and friendship, of seeking and fulfilling her destiny, and one in which danger is always conspiring or lurking around one corner or another. She is a wonderful heroine - she is engaging and loveable, straightforward yet complex, and humble despite her abilities. Through the adventure and the challenges she faces, Mya does not only become more resilient and self-reliant, she learns to trust both her own instincts and the destiny to which she is called.

The cast of characters surrounding Mya is varied and interesting, each one portrayed in full colour and lively detail. The story is told with rich imagery and well-paced action that moves along at a very good pace.

Sheldrake is an author who should be much more widely read, as her books are highly original and hold enormous appeal for lovers of fantasy, adventure and coming of age stories alike.

If you are reading this book for the fairies from Sheldrake's Wellspring series, you'll be disappointed. If, however, you are reading it because you found Mya a fascinating character and want to know more about her background, you will be delighted! In this prequel to the Wellspring series (but you don't HAVE to have read that series to read and enjoy this book), Mya is a thirteen-year-old with a rather dubious role model for a father, and she exhibits just the right amounts of naivete and wariness. Mya's magical voice draws people to her, but not all of those people are positive influences. The story of how she finds her place is twisty, satisfying, and fun. At some point in the story, you will think, "Well, I didn't see THAT coming!" Then you'll have to start reading from the beginning to see if there were clues you missed. I am being vague, but if I told you the good bits, you'd be annoyed you didn't get to read them yourself! I think there will be more "biographies" of His Majesty's Elite, and I am looking forward to more (hint hint hint if the author reads this).

loved this prequel to the Keepers of Wellsprings Series. I love Mya. Her story to me is amazing. I would love to hear her sing! I felt Little Mermaid vibes coming from this. How she is half siren and could enchant people with her voice. That poor girl though! The way everyone including her own father used her for their own greed is just heartbreaking. She is a very strong person and a wonderful role model. She stands up for what she believes in and for what is right. Mya remains humble and loving. I am so happy to see how all the characters from the series come together and form a family. This is definitely one of the best fantasy world. 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent book full of characters that feel real in that fantasy way. The story brings you along on the trip. You don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s a page turner. Love the first person aspect so you don’t know what the other characters are doing until the hero finds out. Loved it!

I've enjoyed all of Missy Sheldrake's books. She creates interesting characters in spellbinding worlds and sets them free to live their lives. But I was blown away when my 12-year old son picked up this book--and read it cover-to-cover. I can never get him to read books with me! But now we have a great adventure to talk about!

The story is good but there are quite a few typos that take away from the tale. Besides that it is an original story with no shadows of others like it.

Even though this takes place prior to the Keeper’s. I was so sad when those wonderful books came to a conclusion. Now though I get to discover the amazing lives of those who came first. I had a lot of hopes for Mya and I was not disappointed. Another fine feather <wink> in Missy Sheldrake’s cap.

Mya is the first stand-alone book in the "His Majesty Elite" young adult fantasy series.

We first met Mya in the "Keepers of The Wellsprings" series and this is her story 😍 You can read Mya before the KOTW series as Mya is set when she is thirteen years old, years prior to KOTW.

Her voice might be her power but Mya needs to find her voice and feet in this world. Will she succeed?

Mya is thirteen, naive and entirely too trusting. While she's waiting on her dad to come back for her, counting down the days in her journal, she is picked up by a questionable companion of her dads, and heads on an adventure across the sea to Cerion.

Finding herself on a pirate ship, she keeps to herself untill she's forced to reveal her power in order to try and help save the crew. While on the ship Mya meets Cort. I loved their dynamic the brotherly love Cort has for Mya. It's so sweet seeing how these two met and the growth in their friendship as they look out for eachother throughout the book.

In Cerion Mya's father is no where to be seen and she's forced into competing in a singing contest. She meets a fellow Minstrel but is he a friend or foe?

While navigating a singing contest, looking for her father, first love, figuring out who to trust and who to watch out for, Mya finds herself caught up in a Royal conspiracy.

Throughout the book we are introduced to the the dreaming, Royal members of court, magic, The Royal Guild and its famous cook (I love Mouli), Cerion's traditions and sorcerers. All woven together with expertise.

I absolutely loved this coming-of-age story. Reading Mya felt like coming home for me. It was heartwarming to see how Mya met some of the future Elite Guild members. I can't wait to read more of the Elites stories. Especially Elliot, he is my most anticipated read within the Guild members 😍.

This books is filled with friendships, love, Royal intrigue, Sorcerers and difficult choices that will define Mya for the rest of her life.

Will Mya find her happy ending? You'll have to read to find out..
