Not the Bible. It’s like the Bible. Only not.
John was born at a very young age with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. At first, it appeared that no lasting damage had been done, but as he grew it became clear that his sense of humour had been damaged irreparably.
John lives with his family near Oxford, England where daily he wonders how his wife still finds the same jokes funny after more than 20 years of marriage.

About the Author
Not even Bible College, counselling, and prayer ministry has been able to rectify things, so John eagerly awaits the new creation where his humour will be perfected.
John also trained as a teacher at Oxford University, but despite this he still refers to himself in the third person. Whilst there, he performed stand-up comedy as part of the Oxford Revue but got tired and has been sitting down at his desk to perform his humour ever since.
So now, when he's not wrestling with work-life balance or literally wrestling with his four children, he's wrestling with writing funny words on a page in his cramped study.

John trained as a teacher at Oxford University, but despite this he still refers to himself in the third person.
John loves using stories and his rather quirky British humour to open people’s eyes.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018"More Not the Parables of Jesus" is a sharp, funny satire that offers keen critiques of modern church culture and attitudes. It's an easy read. I started on an exercise machine at the gym. The guy with me asked what I was laughing at, so I started reading it to him... before long we were both rolling. I plan on using several of the retellings in sermons in the future. The humor does a good job of drawing you in, but the sharp satire drives home some excellent points. One thing I really appreciated about this book was that it didn't offer the same-old-same-old perspective. I heartily recommend this book for a light, funny read or as a resource for sermon writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2018Funny and succinct. Clear enough even Rob Bell would understand; he still might not state what he believes but he’ll understand.
There were a few parables to which I snorted laughter and woke my baby: the Prodigal Son #3 was one of those.
Some will make you think as well as chuckle. Some are uplifting and remind us that this walk with Christ is not easy in this world but it’s worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2018I keep a copy of the original Not the Parables on my coffee table. Guests love to look through it and giggle at its obvious absurdity. MORE Not the Parables of Jesus will be a perfect companion. John Spencer's wry and sarcastic humor (or humour in his case) come through brilliantly once again. A tongue-in-cheek look at the parables underscore their main points through mockery and juxtaposition. In particular, I like the Prodigal Son parables .
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018This book is best for those who enjoy laughter and want to be challenged intellectually. This farcical collection of stories will have you ROTFL as well as re-evaluating your view of scripture. The way John turns parables on their head will give you a new way to reflect on well-worn Bible passages.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2020Did these other people who raved about it read the same book? This was not at all funny. I was scratching my head at just how bad it was and how anyone could find it humorous. I expected funny and clever spoofs but it was all just dull. Don't bother with it
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2018Had a great hour or so reading this. Has a lot of great insight, as all great satire must. Found myself eagerly wanting to share some of the parables with others right away.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2018I really enjoyed reading this. Some great food for thought while you're sitting down with a few minutes of time. Lots of laughs and lots of great perspective.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018They said he couldn’t do it. So John Spencer did. He wrote the 'Not The Parables'. Again.
He got it right this time, too, matching Jesus in this rather surprising storytelling, while bashing modern day scholars in the process (yes, you too are a Pharisee, prof). A slight variation, though, since he’s digging deeper this time. Although still the same, profound wisdom that many, luckily, can buy. Rumour has it that Spencer actually had more than eighty Parables laid out on his desk before cutting the stack in two, just like the judge would have done with the baby, but we all know Facebook cannot be trusted these days so maybe I shouldn’t have counted all the try-outs with the anon gang. Well, he may have lost some parables in the process, but this book isn’t about quantity anyway. Just shear quality.
What would Jesus do, pastors tend to ask me from the pulpit. (Except filling up the collection basket.) Well, it seems that they try to get my attention while having me seated down for a full forty minutes just telling me off. After having read John Spencer’s first ‘Not The Parables’, and now this, I think, however, I know the answer. I know what Jesus would do. Jesus would do exactly this. Razor sharp rants, intelligent comparisons, howling hyperbole and modern day metaphors. Spencer is up to it.
Of course, I shouldn't be laughing so much during my reading, because these poor people in all their varieties are more than a laughing matter. They're my constant reminder, that slight little headache that won’t quite let go. That one which reminds me who I could be. Hadn’t life panned out the way it luckily did I would have had more than my fair share of sc**w-ups. (Pardon my French, it’s only because wifey’s family originated outside Paris.)
Well, as I said, More Not The Parables is no laughing matter but I did laugh my butt off. And again, pardon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsettling in a Good way.
When trying to set a thermostat in an office, if half of the workers are too hot, and half of the workers are too cold, you are probably have just the right temperature.
As I read “More Not the Parables of Jesus” I think John Spencer has hit this point with his satire. I spent half the book laughing at “those Christians” and half the time miffed that he was making fun of me.
More Not the Parables of Jesus is unsettling in a good way. It pushes the reader to place themselves in the parable and consider what they would do placed in that situation.
It reminds us of the weight of scripture. Sometimes we wish scripture said something different than what it does say, by writing what’s not in the bible, we see that what we think we want isn’t what we need.
I’d recommend this book for those looking for a humorous addition to bible studies and sermons that challenges in your faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put this down for days. John Spencer's ...
I couldn't put this down for days. John Spencer's More Not The Parables of Jesus kept me engaged through one of the busiest times of my life and brought much needed sanity and comic relief. Not just humour but truth. Spencer nails it! By applying the parables to church traditions, culture and sloppy theology, he articulates what we always knew but could not quite express. But I have to stop reading it so much, I'm starting to confuse them with the real parables.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing
This book is thought provoking, disturbingly funny, and rather irreverent, and some of the chapters are decidedly better than others.
