5.0 out of 5 stars 5 ratings

Satire to set your heart on fire.

What if the parables weren’t so well known?
Would you still think the same way?

Not the Parable of the Good Samaritan contains 40 different takes on the original parable to snap us out of our over-familiarity and to open our eyes to the truth of the Gospel.

Half tongue-in-cheek, half right between the eyes

Often fun, sometimes poignant, and occasionally painful; these parables reveal our cultural biases, hidden assumptions, and the lies we believe.

Preach the gospel at all times and when necessary use satire.

Not the Bible. It’s like the Bible. Only not.

About the Author

John was born at a very young age with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. At first, it appeared that no lasting damage had been done, but as he grew it became clear that his sense of humour had been damaged irreparably.

Not even Bible College, counselling, and prayer ministry has been able to rectify things, so John eagerly awaits the new creation where his humour will be perfected.

John also trained as a teacher at Oxford University, but despite this he still refers to himself in the third person. Whilst there, he performed stand-up comedy as part of the Oxford Revue but got tired and has been sitting down at his desk to perform his humour ever since.

So now, when he's not wrestling with work-life balance or literally wrestling with his four children, he's wrestling with writing funny words on a page in his cramped study.

John lives with his family near Oxford, England where daily he wonders how his wife still finds the same jokes funny after more than 20 years of marriage.

I enjoy these books. They make fun sermon illustrations, or just fun reading.

This book recounts the Parable of the Good Samaritan, the story we all know and love, and then re-imagines it with multiple variations in the identity of the characters and their responses in order to make a humorous, sometimes painful, biblical point about a common problem in society. Exploitation of others' suffering, majority and minority racism, legalism and the opposite "all things are lawful" attitude - these are just a few of the many temptations common unto man that find themselves spotlighted in this choose-your-own-adventure-esque retelling. Prepare to find yourself laughing at the speck in your brother's eye and then cringing at the log in your own, especially if you have failed to see Christianity's favorite pop culture classic, The Princess Bride (you heathen).

Get this book. Read this book. Your wit will laugh and your wisdom will grow.

This was a very entertaining read. John has taken a very well known parable and given it a fresh new coat in some funny and thought provoking ways. I would absolutely recommend this book to any friends I have in the ministry (In fact I have recommended it to a couple already.) And the “Pointless Parables” were humorously mixed with pop-culture references such as Dr Who and The Princess Bride extremely well.
This was my first “Not the Parable” book to read, but I’m sure it won’t be my last.

This is my first read from John and the Not The Parables series, and I must say it was well worth it. It is filled with humorous and most times brutally honest takes on the way we often read Scripture/apply it to our lives. I plan on using some of his examples in my church and teaching, because he really makes you stop and think about the way you view others etc... Great job John!

This book is a creative kick in the groin for the modern Christian. It uses clever humor to pinpoint the misconceptions the church has about the teachings and expectations of Jesus. Well done Mr. Spencer.
