Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
One Tier-1 Naval Special Warfare Operator, trained at the highest levels of any military, with 20-plus years of operational experience. One ex-cop civilian survivalist, who lived through two years of post-apocalyptic hell, unlike seven billion of her fellow humans. And an entire continent heaving with 400 million dead guys.
To save the lives of his children, and rejoin Alpha team and the fight to save humanity, Homer will have to journey across a thousand miles of undead North America with Sarah Cameron, battling heavily armed bands of marauders who shoot first and ask questions never, and ultimately face down the remains of the world's last surviving SEAL team - now led by a malevolent and piratical monster.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFirst off, do NOT read this book first. I would read it after book 11 or 12.
Homer is the SEAL of Alpha and with that comes all the mysticism that SEALs evoke. He also is juxtaposed with being a hardcore Christian. So for wanting just death incarnate you don’t get to have that with him. You get death, a lot of regret, and maybe some rewards for faith in the good of fellow humans. Luckily for us, Homer gets to see humanity betray his faith constantly.
Additionally, everyone who has read the main series wanted to know what happened on that “journey”. This book only had a short time frame to take place in and while it departs from the normal action-fest, it was interesting to see Homer’s view on the world.
I found it light on the zombie killing, but this book is about giving you a view of Homer and it did that well. We probably still don’t like him the best, but he is probably the best in many areas.
I thought the angle of the Redman and the canoeing incidents irl taken into the book and going just one step further was a great take on how the post apocalypse affected even the most skilled. (If you don’t know about this stuff read up on it. I thought it was a great angle to take further in the apocalypse.)
This book is about Homer, so the constant refrain of his training throughout the narrative makes sense. That is what he is. You might not like all he represents in the books but he is true to the path he is on.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNot as good as the other books in the series, but still better than almost anything else in the genre. I assume anybody reading this has already read the other books. (If not, read them first). I looked forward to every book in the Arisen series, and was sad when it finally came to an end. So when the additional, complementary books came out, I was thrilled. I read them all the first day they were available. This is the only one that disappointed me somewhat.
It may be the characters in the story that made me like it less; while I love Homer, I just don’t find the character of Sarah to be very likable. In fact, I found that aside from her zombie survival/prepper skills, there’s not much redeemable about her at all. Her family was annoying, no doubt, but her lack of love for them was disturbing at the outset. The way she handled things with the man she supposedly just fell in love made her even less likable. I think the authors were trying to make her a more complex character, rather than just a one-dimensional idealized woman, but I don’t think it worked well. Even complex characters should have more than just zombie survival skills to make anyone fall in love (or very strong “like”) with them. This book seemed to be an attempt to show us more about who Sarah is and why she made the kinds of choices she did, but I really wish the author had chosen a different person to focus on, especially since she still had to rely on Homer to save her since her own skills weren’t enough to actually help him save anyone much at all.
My other complaint is very small- the beginning of the book retold so much of what happened when the team first left Homer and Sarah that I had to go back and double check that I hadn’t already read it. Familiarizing the reader with the characters and where we left them could have been done much more quickly, and jumping right into new, tense situations would have been more effective. That’s exactly how the author handled the other add-on books, and it made them as thrilling as the numbered books in the series.
With all that said, it may sound like I didn’t like the book, but I did. I love the characters on the team, and I enjoyed seeing more of Homer outside the team. I also liked the reunion with his children and the dramatic situations that led to their rescue, and his reunion with his team as well.
Overall, I didn’t find this book had nearly the same strengths as the rest of the series, but the author is arguably one of the best in the genre, so it was still a great read. If you’re a fan of the series, you probably won’t even read these reviews anyway. You’ve been anxiously awaiting the newest books about our favorite team, and the rambling criticisms of another fan won’t change anything!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs I read this book, I couldn't believe that MF "went there" - he incorporated the dark side of the special operations culture, especially the hushed dirty deeds of ST6 and the "second coming of Marcinko". Most is open-source and MF does paint a picture of how war/killing and celebrity status can affect even those with the most noble of aspirations...Homer served as the perfect protagonist against this backdrop.
I found this book of the Arisen series to be my favorite next to Genesis. MF imho is the only non-former mil author that can write about the subject and sound convincing - teamed up with Bray (for audio books), they are the ultimate duo. I would love to see the Arisen series continue on this route with side novels about the other characters. MF is on his way to building an Arisen Universe!
I'm actually surprised Arisen has not been picked up as a movie series - hint, hint Hollywood, Netflix, etc...
Would've loved to see Odin and his Ulfhednar up against Misha and his World F ;-)
- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAlpha operator Homer and ex-cop Sarah Cameron race across the country to save their families (in Sarah's case, to put the undead remains to rest) and return to the carrier USS John F Kennedy before it left for its return to Britain. The trip was dangerous in extreme, but . . . well, you can read for yourself.
Tried and true characters explain more of their backstory during their trip. This side story is beautifully well-written and their friendship develops but can go no further as they remain committed to their relationships with Handon and Ali.
I love this part of the Arisen storyline and it's a story overdue in its telling. A large gap is filled. The superbly written characters stay true and the return to Seal Team Six's Dam Neck compound brings a few new surprises. All in all, a great read! Your turn. . . All you need is all you got! Keep your head down and enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Long anticipated novel
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseStayed up the whole night and found myself reimerged with the Arisen world. Homer is such a great character and I thank MF for giving us such an excellent story that maintained the high standards the previous books in the Arisen series have employed. I hope there are more books to come from the Arisen universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars I hope they are all like this!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving just started the Arisen series at the beginning of this year I slotted this book into what Michael calls the Hybrid order ( between 5 and6 ) being a standalone I wasn't sure what to expect especially since it was written well after the series ended. I loved this book the 2 main characters were great even in the main series and now with this book the you get to see their story and all the consequences of their fateful decision in book 3! the books never seem to lose any pace or focus and really are non stop action. back on the main series now with Horizon and love how the narrative is changing and has all characters soul searching!
with the promise of more standalone books on the way ill definitely be sticking with this series all the way through
Cant wait to see what happens next!! if you have started this already you should!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great backstory, that fills in some of the gaps.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a backstory book, that fills in what happened to Homer and Sarah once they left the team at Sarah's cabin, through to them landing back on the carrier with Homer's children.
It's filled with action and intrigue, and while you always know that they are going to make it, it's the HOW that makes it so good. There are a few moments that you see coming a mile away, but overall, it's just a damn good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loose ends to explore job done
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMichael manages to maintain and also exceed expectations yet again. I've been with Arisen from the start and in between read other great zombie military horror series but I always look forward the most to Arisen. Michael took risks with this side quest story of Homer's which surprised me, particularly a side of former colleagues we wouldn't expect. But it worked and then some. Always detailed and highly accurate serious and often humorous too, and as usual action packed. I just wish Netflix would snap up the rights and film it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseJust another exclamation point on one of my favourite series of all time. A worthy tale of Homer and his Odyssey.
